Why has my 18 year old son had his Covid jab?

He is back at uni and told me yesterday that he has had his jab! He got sent an appt by text so went along.
How? Why? Could it be because he is registered with a GP at uni for his very mild asthma? He is perfectly fit and healthy.
He didn't think to ask why he had been offered it! Do you know anyone of the same age and healthy who has had their jab?

My friend’s granddaughter who is 19 had it and she has no idea why but was pleased to get it. She had the AZ one.

Mrsjayy · 10/04/2021 11:06

Sorry I did mean to say he should have asked just out of curiosity not to " police" the vaccine programme. I asked when I had mine was just conversation with vaccinator that's all.

BluebellsGreenbells · 10/04/2021 11:07

My 16 year old has had it, his doctors records are wrong stating he’s massively overweight.

I still took him.

NameChangedForThisFeb21 · 10/04/2021 11:09

You’ve answered your own question. He’s asthmatic. It puts him at higher risk of complications.

NCembarassed · 10/04/2021 11:16

I'm surprised by everyone saying it's b/c of his asthma.

I am literally, the only person at my work (school), who's not had the jab yet. Colleagues have been surprised as it doesn't seem to matter that they are young, fit, & tell me they have no health conditions.

I am 40s, overweight, and have asthma which is not under good control with steroids (2xpuffs Fostair twice a day & montelukast). For most if my day, I typically work less than 50cm from children when I am 1:1 with a piece of plastic sheet attached to my head for protection Hmm.

When I called my GP surgery, I was told I will not be jabbed anytime soon, as my asthma "has not required hospital admission recently". It doesn't matter that the past two times I should have gone to hospital, I didn't- as am a single parent with no childcare. Ughhh.

PinkTonic · 10/04/2021 11:19

Bristol are vaccinating students, is he at Bristol? Or maybe other universities are doing the same?

Eccle80 · 10/04/2021 11:24

Another one surprised by everyone saying it is because of mild asthma, the criteria for an asthmatic to be vaccinated is very narrow, and I haven’t been as an over 40, overweight asthmatic who has used a steroid inhaler for most of my life and qualifies for flu vaccination

mumwon · 10/04/2021 11:27

re asthma & vax - if as a child you were hospitalised for asthma you are a priority even though you are OK as an adult (risk of re-occurrence)
re ASD -it maybe that for whatever reason your son is on the LD list at the GP or if he has ever had MH issues

lljkk · 10/04/2021 11:32

MN is full of people saying they are miserable about not getting jab yet in spite of their asthma.

NRCS · 10/04/2021 11:42

Ds mates asthma isn't that bad I don't think, he's young and fit, plays sports, just comes off for a puff now and again. He was obviously taken to hospital over it as a younger child, as that is how he was originally diagnosed, and his parents took him a few more times I think, presumably as an asthma attack in a 6/7 year old, even one that could be controlled, is pretty scary and nobody would be taking any chances - unlike maybe an adult who is used to them and knows when they can/can't get it under control. So I am guessing if you have just turned 16 and were taken to hospital with asthma at say 9 or 10, that sets off the recently hospitalised with asthma flag. Or maybe young asthmatics, even mild ones, are flagged as more of a risk as they are less proven at having it under control with medication, still growing etc.

My 16y old knows 3 16y olds that have had the Pfizer jab now due to what looks like mild asthma - they all play football/rugby with him. He is the only one he knows who is completely fit and healthy with no underlying conditions to have it.

Very frustrating for older asthmatics, hopefully your won't be long as they are into the 40s and it looks like many 20/30s will refuse it.

mumwon · 10/04/2021 11:42

It maybe up to the individual's gp listing of vulnerability

babbaloushka · 10/04/2021 11:42

Uni GPs have been able to roll out quicker as they don't have as many older patients, so his history of asthma probably flagged up.

Againstmachine · 10/04/2021 12:20

*The Op didn’t say she want happy!!

She asked a question.*

Yes but we aren't privy to his medical records or even going to know why, it's pointless asking.

user1493494961 · 10/04/2021 12:22

Why would random people on Mumsnet know.

You should be group 6 if you've ever had a hospital admission for your asthma.
WombatChocolate · 10/04/2021 16:59

I agree it isn’t up to individuals to verify their own eligibility if invited for jab.

The best thing they can do for everyone is to book ASAP and get it and then the sooner they protected and the queue moves on with as little use of time and resources as possible. Everyone phoning up to ‘just check’ they should be having it uses valuable resources and slows it all down. Assume they have their lists correct and if there’s the odd mistake which means someone gets called sooner, just accept it.

This policing of individuals...either of selves or judgement that others shouldn’t be getting it yet is a bit daft. Group 6 with underlying conditions is vast and frequently people don’t know the conditions of others or what qualifies Woolmark in this category. That was hugely evident on this thread where lots of the younger people who’ve been jabbed had conditions which might explain their eligibility.

As long as people aren’t defrauding the system..and the loophole where people could lie about being unpaid carers has been closed as such people now need to go via GP who will be a bit more rigorous in checking eligibility....then if they meet eligibility criteria in the national booking system or get the invite via the GP led system, they should just get in with it.

Of course, few of those complaining have already been jabbed. It’s usually those waiting and whilst I understand it’s frustrating, especially for upper 40s who feel they have been waiting a long time now, it really is green eyed envy that leads to the obsessions about why individuals are getting the jab and making judgements about their eligibility. Fortunately the system is deciding rather than MN.

BogRollBOGOF · 10/04/2021 18:02

My area is doing a lot of use it or lose it and has sent out to institutions if there is going to be spare capacity at the end of the day.

BluebellsGreenbells · 10/04/2021 19:04

I think the uproar has quite rightly closed the loop hole. It’s not envy. Nobody likes a queue jumper!

Sounds like a postcode lottery. My 16 year old son has never been hospitalised for his asthma although has come close but that wouldn't be on his GP records. He was called by his GP and had the Pfizer jab a couple of weeks ago.
Porcupineintherough · 10/04/2021 23:08

My niece. Age 26, mild asthma. Called for jab 3 weeks ago by gp.
