AstraZeneca - Very painful legs

Dottyyy1 · 08/04/2021 22:17

I had the AZ vaccine 9 days ago and I am now experiencing very sore, painful lower legs. I wondered if anyone else had experienced this side effect or should I be worried about a blood clot?
My symptoms immediately following the vaccine were very mild so I am surprised about this leg pain for more than 24 hours. They don’t appear swollen, just very painful as if I have done a lot of exercise...but I definitely have not! Very concerned.

Many people would have died without the use of medicines/vaccines @Dustyboots

Tealightsandd · 08/04/2021 23:36

If it is a clot, it will be the science that treats it. The treatment will be putting something else in the body.

I had very painful aching legs the day after my AZ but it only lasted that one day. It's definitely less likely to be a clot if both legs but worth checking out with GP or 111 just to be on the safe side.

How to you think you’re helping the op @Dustyboots?

Why don’t you start your own thread to share your own special brand of wisdom on this?

Dustyboots · 08/04/2021 23:37

There is nothing wrong with questioning the status quo @PurpleDaisies.

How have you helped the op?

Babyroobs · 08/04/2021 23:38

@Dustyboots

I can ask the question can't I? I'm shocked, so shocked, that people are accepting this stuff - like it's all just so fine to let these trustworthy science people f*ck around with our bodies ...
I have had a serious headache since the vaccine, an extremely scary episode with my eye almost like a seizure and crampy legs. I have spoken to my Gp who says they haven't been given much guidance on what to say to those with prolonged headaches. I have arranged an optician appointment. I am beginning to wish I had not had the vaccine. People can keep churning out that covid is so much worse, but this episode with my eye has really shaken me up as it was like nothing I have ever experienced before.

By advising her to seek real life medical help? It’s right there in my posts.

@Dottyyy1

Sorry to hear you're feeling rough Flowers Best advice anyone can give you is to ring 111 to get proper medical advice.

But really important to remember that;

  1. The AZ vaccine is linked to a small number of CVSTs (specific type of blood clot in the brain), not to blood clots in general. People are asked to be aware of symptoms including headache and blurred vision which could indicate CVST.
  2. The chance of you having a blood clot in both legs (bilateral DVT) is miniscule, unless you are someone who is very high risk.
btwwhichonespink · 08/04/2021 23:41

The man in the Daily Mail today had leg pains. He thought he had a running injury. Also another lady on here mentioned her friend, who got one of these clots, started with pain in her leg.

I do think you should get it checked out tomorrow.

Why do we put so much faith in Science? Why do we let these people inject this stuff into our bodies?

Sorry OP. I hope you are OK and start feeling better. I'm really sorry you're suffering with this.

Are you suggesting that science is lying to us in some way? Science by definition is fact, if it's not true it ain't science.

Get checked by a doctor OP to be on the safe side, start with 111

Dustyboots · 08/04/2021 23:43

Brilliant @PurpleDaisies - I offered OP my sympathy. Is that not helpful too? Shall we enter a competition to see who has been the most helpful?

On that note - the eye reaction sounds scary @Babyroobs

My DS has something similar and magnesium can calm the nervous system. Also Epsom salts in the bath.

GrainOfSalt · 08/04/2021 23:44

I would definitly call GP or go to A and E.

I had the same 14 days post astrazeneca. Started with very swollen lymph nodes under left (jab) arm on day 9, telephone consultation with GP, said probably reaction to AZ, call again in a week of not resolved or sooner if anything else. Then on day 14 very sore lower legs, red, warm to the touch, very slow to return to normal colour if I pressed them, with some swelling and pitting. Called the GP and they had me in for blood tests within the hour and sent a prescription to the chemist so I could pick up immediately if I needed it after the test results came through and would also have to have further tests etc. Tests negative for blood clots but slightly elevated CRP suggesting some inflammation (if I have that right - I'm not a doctor), so didn't have to get prescription and told to watch and wait but go in if it got worse. Oscillated between exercise and feet up. Another two weeks later and legs are finally almost normal, just very slightly swollen in the evenings but feel normal now - no heat, redness and skin doesn't stay white when I press it.

Please do call someone, I was in the surgery having tests within 40 mins of my telephone GP call.

Looking forward to the second jab at the end of May :)

Fgs.

Our current understanding of epidemiology, virology and immunology are based on thousands of years of research that has been developed over time. There is still a huge amount of unknowns and a lot of debate but in terms of drug development and getting a safe vaccine out this was a global effort from hundreds of scientists who have been working flat out for over a year.

And the consensus opinion from all of these experts is that now that several vaccines are available, the best thing you can do for your health is take the opportunity to be vaccinated when offered.

All medications interventions come with a risk/benefit profile and no one is being forced to have it, but that fact that vaccines have passed all stages of clinical trials and have been approved and are now available only a year into a pandemic is actually astounding.

Dustyboots · 09/04/2021 00:21

OK - you go ahead then old egg.

oldegg123 · 09/04/2021 00:26

Go ahead with what- getting vaccinated?

I'm in the lowest priority group (30 yo, no health conditions) so haven't been given an appointment yet, but will take it as soon as offered.

Hold on..

So you're bashing the scientists who have created the vaccine but are okay with the scientists which have studied that magnesium MAY be helpful as a treatment for anxiety/nerves etc.
Makes sense.

Dustyboots · 09/04/2021 00:28

Magnesium may be helpful in calming the nervous system. It seems to help DS. It is a theory. I never said it was fact - nor do I believe that it is.

Silverparting · 09/04/2021 00:28

I had a strange feeling down the front of one leg when I had the vaccination 2.5 weeks ago. It lasted a day or so. A bit like my leg had gone to sleep (as if you'd been kneeling on it)

Now it still has an odd sensation. Not painful, just tingly.

I'm 47 and female. I'm counting the days post vaccination as between 4 and 20 days is the time frame I believe.

Torvean · 09/04/2021 01:27

The main symptoms of DVTs are

  • throbbing or cramping pain in 1 leg (rarely both legs),
usually in the calf or thigh.

-swelling in 1 leg (rarely both legs)

  • warm skin around the painful area.

-red or darkened skin around the painful area.

-swollen veins that are hard or sore when you touch them.

MrsFezziwig · 09/04/2021 01:44

Why do we put so much faith in Science? Why do we let these people inject this stuff into our bodies?

Regardless of anyone’s opinions on the vaccine, I find it disgusting that a poster, obviously worried about a medical issue late at night, posts on here and is met by this sort of stuff. If OP had wanted to know your opinions on vaccination she would started an entirely different thread. How is this “offering sympathy?” Shame on you.

LizzieMacQueen · 09/04/2021 07:17

@Dottyyy1 What did you decide to do?

I'm considering calling my GP as I have had throbbing in my right lower leg from about Monday this week - off & on - not painful really. I had the AZ jab 20 days ago.

3catsandcounting · 09/04/2021 08:56

I had the AZ five weeks ago and reacted badly to it (flu symptoms for a few days) but the aching legs lasted 3 weeks. At first I couldn’t keep my legs still, had to keep rubbing them, then it turned into a dull ache especially when resting.
3 other people I know had the same symptom.
All fine now 😊
