What's so special about COVID? It's not as deadly or as contagious as many other diseases we routinely vaccinate against, yet we're now talking about implementing ID cards- which civil liberties campaigners have fought against for decades, for good reason- so that vaccination passports can be utilised. Why?

Why is it not like every other disease we've encountered to date- offer the vaccine, people either accept it or take their chances with the disease, and then life goes on? We are already one of the most closely monitored populations in the western world when it comes to surveillance of the innocent. What makes COVID worth sacrificing yet more of our freedom for?

OP there is a thread below which is interesting.
I’ve been following and posting in it. We don’t all agree on everything but we do treat each other with respect and don’t call each other ‘stupid’ or hurl other insults (or frantically post pictures of biscuits like we are about 5 years old).

Thank you for the link. I won’t go any further as not to derail the thread or engage in a pointless conversation that won’t end well.

There is the loss of liberty, and the creepy reality that the state will use these cards – doubtless with the best possible intentions – to store all manner of detail about us

Taken from that link. Let’s just say the state already knows all manner of detail about us such us our habits and what benefits we receive, they really don’t need ID cards for that 😂

I don't know if vaccination passports are the right policy; they definitely need very careful thought from a civil liberties perspective, and consideration of whether the potentially coercive element will backfire and cause entrenched vaccine resistance.

But I work in healthcare, and I think it is quite possible for an enormous amount of morbidity and mortality to occur even if the majority of the vulnerable and a significant proportion of the rest of the population are vaccinated. It's an option worth exploring if we want to reopen theatres, concerts, nightclubs and mass events.

Covid is indeed 'special' in that it has caused a pandemic. Useful comparisons are the 1918 flu and 1820 cholera pandemic. At it's worst, hospitals felt like a war zone. We very much hope that the worst is behind us. But what would happen if we had mass events open to all in the near future? We don't know. Exploring the possibility of using a vaccine passports or negative test to travel or attend large events is probably reasonable.

Isn't the point of vax passports to encourage people back into businesses and venues and get life restarted? So they can be reassured that most other people they are mingling with there are safeish?
