Ds positive lateral flow test

Realitea · 07/04/2021 18:33

My son (20) said he was feeling more tired than usual so I suggested he take a LF test. It came up positive. He did another 2 and they were positive too. We have a PCR coming in the post soon but I think we know the answer
Everyone else in the family are getting negative lateral flow results. Is it possible we will avoid it despite all living together? I’m so panicky. I haven’t had a vaccine yet and I’m overweight and 40 so I can’t stop worrying. I know exactly where he got it meeting up with a girl indoors while I was in bed! I said when I found out that he was putting us at risk - and he has done. Dh also went to a family gathering indoors against my wishes at the weekend. I just feel so sad that I’ve stuck to every bit of guidance yet the people around me are the ones who have put me at risk.

I know people who had two positive Lft and then a negative PCR. Its probably a false positive. Don't panic.

SummerHouse · 07/04/2021 18:46

I don't think it will do you any good to blame anyone. Just see what the test says and take it from there. He might not get a positive, you might not catch it, you are extremely unlikely to get really ill. Lots of stats on your side.

PrettyCherryBlossom · 07/04/2021 18:46

We’re in the same position. DS1 had a positive lateral flow last week, confirmed by a positive pcr. 4 days later DS2 had a positive lateral flow and we’re awaiting the pcr result. I expect it to be positive as he had a fever and a cough (although DS1 had no symptoms).
DD, DH and I are now waiting to see if we catch it Sad

MajesticWhine · 07/04/2021 18:48

It is possible you will avoid it. My two DC got covid at Christmas after some rule breaking by them and the rest of the family didn't go down with it despite us all cooking and eating Christmas lunch together.

EastWestWhosBest · 07/04/2021 18:49

I’m over 40 and overweight and I was ok with Covid. It wasn’t a walk in the park but I was ok after a week.

My DH took four days to catch it from me.

ColourfulElmerElephant · 07/04/2021 18:50

It’s possible you will avoid it and it’s also possible he caught it elsewhere.

ConstantlyIrksome · 07/04/2021 18:53

My DD caught COVID at nursery and tested positive on lateral flow then on PCR, a few days later DH had positive LF and then PCR - I never caught it (was testing with LF every 2 days plus PCR tests at the same time as my DD and DH) despite still breastfeeding my DD! Household transmission rates are actually much lower than you'd think.

Realitea · 07/04/2021 18:53

Thank you everyone
All reassuring stuff which I was hoping for!
I guess we just need to wait for the PCR test result now. He’s since done another lf test which is positive. I think he can stop doing those now!

@ConstantlyIrksome how strange. I also have a friend who had it but her husband and child didn’t. I wonder if they’ll ever figure out how this can happen

DH had a positive lateral flow followed by a positive PCR just before Christmas ( paramedic, only found out because of the bi weekly testing) no symptoms whatsoever.

Me and both DC managed to avoid it completely by shutting him away in a room and when a shared space was necessary, he'd have a mask on.

MadeForThis · 07/04/2021 19:11

Keep the rooms well ventilated. I think the average household spread is 40% much lower if rooms are ventilated.

4PawsGood · 07/04/2021 19:13

False positive LFTs are rare, it’s the false negatives that can happen.

In our house two out of five of us got it. We didn’t separate at all.

FlippinNoah · 07/04/2021 19:21

I had Covid last October. None of my 3DCs tested positive despite all normal interactions, hugging etc.

Aurorie11 · 07/04/2021 19:45

DH had positive LFT and then PCR yesterday. He had vaccine 13 days before when we think he got it. Me and DS had negative lft today, just waiting game now

ThriceAsNaice · 07/04/2021 19:51

I am 45 and overweight and was ok with covid. DH and I caught it from youngest DC. Two elder DC's did not get it, kept mainly to their rooms (gaming so not like we confined them). Encouranged them to sanitise hands regularly and before eating although I still prepared meals. Kept windows open in all rooms all day, ventilation really is key.

OverTheRainbow88 · 07/04/2021 19:53

@Tryingtryingandtrying

False positive LFT are actually very rare.

I would try not to worry OP, try and get your immune boosted by eating super healthy and taking vitamins. I would also be annoyed if I was being very cautious and my family were breaking rules which lead to this situation.

SpnBaby1967 · 07/04/2021 19:54

I'm 40, overweight and asthmatic and my covid over xmas wasnt even as bad as some colds I have had. I was able to continue working from home throughout.

I also shared a bed with DH and neither him nor my 3 kids caught it

Abraxan · 07/04/2021 20:07

Dh and teen Dd didn't catch Covid when I had it. They didn't SD from me and Dh kept sleeping in same bed as me.

I agree about it trying to apportion blame if you can. Little good will come of it.

I most likely caught it at work. Luckily Dh and Dd didn't blame me as I'm not sure I'd have cope with being blamed on top of everything else.

scrivette · 07/04/2021 20:08

My DC1 had it and DC3 had it, they had it months apart and no one else in the household caught it from them so you may be lucky.

WingingItSince1973 · 07/04/2021 20:10

I had covid end of January this year. My husband and 14 year old dd didn't catch it. My symptoms were so mild I hardly knew. I'm 48 and slightly overweight with a few health issues so I was relieved to get away so lightly. My dh still share a bed with me and never came down with it xx

Tryingtryingandtrying · 07/04/2021 20:13

@OverTheRainbow88 I know that's what they say, but I know more ltf that were false positives than actual positives (works in a school)

Tryingtryingandtrying · 07/04/2021 20:15

I actually wonder if other coronaviruses that cause runny nose and cold symtoms are setting the LTF tests off as false positives.

MrsAvocet · 07/04/2021 20:16

I know seversl people who have had a family member with covid and they didn't catch it. One half of a couple we know was in intensive care and as the other half was undergoing chemotherapy for lung cancer at the time everyone was fearing the worst. But nobody else in the family caught it and the affected individual also made a complete recovery. Not that I am downplaying the situation but I think it does pay to remember that the vast majority of people do get better. We hear all the terrible stories - quite rightly of course - but good news stories aren't reported as much so we can get a skewed perspective on things.
I hope you all stay healthy.

Idiotathome79 · 07/04/2021 20:17

@Tryingtryingandtrying my daughter did just that two positives in a lateral and a negative pcr .

Op I live with 7 ppl in October I have COVID , only I got it everyone pcr test came back negative

FlyingBurrito · 07/04/2021 20:20

I think the statistical transmission within households is about 50% although that may have changed recently. It's certainly not a forgone conclusion that you'll catch it.

I totally understand why you would be annoyed with anyone who has knowingly flouted the rules and put someone else at risk
