Anyone else feel like we are stuck now?

I don't really know how to explain it. Just feel like the rates of everything we measure are plateauing. Anyone else feel we will be in semi lockdown forever? I guess part of my frustration is the bad weather when ee can finally meet in gardens 😂

OP posts:
Baileysforchristmas · 07/04/2021 19:23

In our area now the infection rate is 30 to 100,000 at Christmas it was 1200😮, more tests are available, it’s the safest it’s been for ages if I was 40’s or under without any health issues I wouldn’t be worried if your not vaccinated, you’d be pretty unlucky one to catch it and then to end up really ill.

Loveisthehope · 07/04/2021 20:14

Def feel stuck

ColourfulElmerElephant · 07/04/2021 20:16

I think things are going really well. I’m concerned the AZ risks might put some off being vaccinated (or having a second dose) which could cause problems later in the year but for now it feels like we are finally getting some more freedom back. I’d quite like the weather to cooperate with the fact we can now be sociable outside though and warm up a bit.

OliveTree75 · 07/04/2021 20:22

Nope I feel actually happy for first time in ages. Had lovely bbq's in garden with family at the weekend. Having my best friend over for gins in the garden for her bday at the weekend. Getting my hair cut and going shopping next week! I am also back at work after maternity and being with my work friends and back in the real world has done wonders for my mental health!

DenisetheMenace · 07/04/2021 20:25

No, thanks to vaccines the outlook is very positive.

Overthebow · 07/04/2021 20:28

@Stellaris22

I'm fed up because I feel like anyone under 40 has been forgotten about.

Not just with the vaccines, but everything. Housing is impossible. But it feels like the vaccine rollout has paused and there's no rush to get people vaccinated anymore. I refuse to visit family etc until we've been vaccinated and haven't left our personal bubble since Christmas 2019.

I think you might be in the minority there. Under 40 here and jumped right into visiting everyone. As has everyone I know of all ages.
Bluntness100 · 07/04/2021 20:31

@TownTalkJewels

I understand where you’re coming from OP. Cases, hospitalisations etc are obviously coming down, but there’s so much doom & gloom from media, Boris et al that it FEELS like we’ve plateaued in this situation & life will never go back to normal.

I work with a lot of Americans & one asked me today why we are still (essentially) in a lockdown, why we can’t leave the country- if it was because deaths are still high, etc? I didn’t really know what to say. I said no, they’ve managed the situation very well but they’re still keeping a lock on things because they’re scared of another resurgence.

That’s why this feels like a plateau to me- it feels like we’ll be living in fear of the next resurgence forever.

You could have responded that there is a road map in place and a new level of things open every five weeks, but they ensure that as they open things it doesn’t lead to a resurgence and we aim to have the country fully open by 21 June.

We can’t leave rhe country because the virus is not under control in many other countries, in fact very few. Some are in strict lock down due to it, ie France

I’m surprised neither you or your colleague were aware of this?

Baileysforchristmas · 07/04/2021 20:31

I don’t think a lot of people will be put off having the 2nd jab, 25 million have had the jab, 89 known people have had rare blood clots, 19 people have died, it’s such a small number, even if the number went up to a 1000 it wouldn’t put me off, much safer to get the 2nd jab and be fully vaccinated.

Oohshortbreadfinger · 07/04/2021 20:45

I agree with you OP and find the level of passive-aggressive jollity on this thread exhausting.

I don’t think there will be either in real life. A small percentage yes, but it will shortly stop being in the news and everyone will just crack on.

Why passive aggressive?

Not really that jolly either

Just saying why not

The problem is, as we have seen throughout this pandemic, the public are awful at assessing risk and analysing statistics.
Baileysforchristmas · 07/04/2021 21:17

@ChocOrange1 I don’t think most people are, even with all the noise from the EU, people here have been turning up for their jab, 2nd jab i think people will be more likely to turn up as you wouldn’t want to be half vaccinated, there will be a small amount but the majority will just get on with it

Babdoc · 07/04/2021 21:34

I’ve been feeling much more cheerful and normal, after having DD and her partner to stay for the Easter weekend! They’re in my bubble, but were shielding until he got vaccinated.
I have booked a haircut now that my hairdresser has opened his salon this week (Scotland). I’m going to the garden centre tomorrow for some bedding plants - they reopened two days ago.
My local hospital now has only one Covid patient still in ITU, and they’ve stopped double staffing the consultant shifts.
All the figures are going in the right direction, the vaccine rollout is the second fastest in the entire world (after Israel) and there is no sign of us getting the third wave currently afflicting the EU - probably due to their lamentable vaccine program failure.
No plateau here, OP - just steady progress out of lockdown. Roll on summer!

TownTalkJewels · 08/04/2021 00:29

@Bluntness100 this is what I said. I said they were afraid of a resurgence. I don’t think my foreign colleague would have been especially interested in the minute details of the U.K. roadmap.

The virus will not be under control in most of the world for many years ahead. You may be comfortable never leaving the country again, but I’m not able to live that way.

I was trying to sympathise with the OP and your level of passive aggressiveness is not necessary.

Um

Ok, I don’t think there is any suggestion it will be years before we can leave the country, gosh some holiday spots like Barbados etc will be open this summer for us, Covid passports will be put in place to permit travel.

Secondly there was nothing aggressive in my post, not liking I question you doesn’t mean it was aggressive.😂

SpringTimeDream · 08/04/2021 07:33

No, not at all.

Where are you @RosieLemonade .... can't be in the UK where vaccine roll out is amazing, rates are still falling, death rate extremely low, everything gradually opening up....

Haven't come across anyone with covid in months here, it feels like a bad dream

SpringTimeDream · 08/04/2021 07:37

@Oohshortbreadfinger

You mean answering the OP question with reasons why people are optimistic and don't think the suggestion of plateau is correct 🤔....

Try not to look for negative in everything

beginningoftheend · 08/04/2021 07:37

I honestly don't know! I feel confused whenever anyone expresses any certainty about what is coming next.

Speaking to colleagues this week there is cautious unlocking, not many seem out and out optimistic.

OrangeBananaFish · 08/04/2021 07:45

I half agree, but for me it's the weather bringing it down. We've had Easter, it's April yet it snowed earlier this week and it's just not getting warmer.

First doses of vaccines have slowed (which was said). Being in my 40s at one point it felt like it wouldn't be long, but now it feels like it could be ages.

Everything else is moving forward though, probably not as quick as I would like, but there is progress, just small steps.

RosieLemonade · 08/04/2021 08:37

I think it is the slowing of vaccines and SAGE saying there will be another wave with the NHS being overwhelemed that made me feel this way.

OP posts:
ForeverInADay · 08/04/2021 08:57

I don't feel the same OP as there is every reason to be optimistic based on statistics at the moment.

I am very disappointed though and a bit disheartened by the slowing of the vaccine roll out though as I was hoping they would get to the 40s group by now. Having said that, I am cautiously, with masks and sanitiser ready, going ahead and booking meals out, plan to see my mum 3 weeks after her 2nd vaccine and have booked some days out for the kids. I would just much rather have had a first vaccine by the point these things were happening BUT my kids need to get out and one of them has been suffering with mental health purely from the nothingness and not seeing family. So, we will be venturing out which will do us all good.

squashyhat · 08/04/2021 09:10

It's not plateauing in the UK but it hasn't gone away. We need to make the most of (but not abuse) the relaxation over the next few months, because cases will rise again in the autumn although hopefully not to former levels. It's inevitable but no reason not to be optimistic.

Chatterbox1987 · 08/04/2021 09:28

2 points to make op.

  1. we were well aware that first doses would slow down this month, it has been widely reported for ages.

  2. when talking about waves, there must be context... what we experienxes over winter was like a tsunami, whereas one in the summer will likely be a little beach wave.... both waves but completely different in damage they can cause.

Considering ( although they struggled) the NHS was not overwhelmed when having 40,000 covid patients when not many people were protect. I can't see them being overwhelmed unless some super strain came and wiped out all our vaccine progress...

I have ds 34, ds 30, ds 27. None of them feel like this. 2 own their own houses and the youngest is saving for a deposit. Ds 27 met his friends outside for the first time since last summer. He was ridiculously excited.

Maybe you need to look in areas with cheaper properties?
