What happens if AZ is paused and you are due your second dose?

Hi, I’m not trying to be a doom monger but there seems to be a lot in the news about AZ and it potentially being paused whilst things are investigated.

I’ve had my first dose and am due my second in a few weeks. What happens if due to any pause I miss my appointment? Can I have another type of jab?

I suppose nobody knows but I’m starting to worry now. I just really want my second jab.

I'm sure they'll offer you a different vax

I had the first AZ and I'm kicking myself. No more covid vaccine for me.

Mrstwiddle · 07/04/2021 11:31

I’m in this situation, I’m not worried about getting the second AZ jab and I wasn’t aware that different jabs could be mixed.

Whatisthisfuckery · 07/04/2021 11:32

I’ve decided against having jab number two regardless.

FreyaFolkvangr · 07/04/2021 11:33

I'm in the same boat OP. It's such a tiny risk, I want my jab - Covid is far more dangerous. I'm due for the second in June.

phlebasconsidered · 07/04/2021 11:35

I am due my second in June and i'll still take it. Covid is muchore of a risk to me as a 49 year old, menopausal, asthmatic teacher.

theotherfossilsister · 07/04/2021 11:38

I'm also due my second in June and really hoping it still happens. I'm obese (working on losing weight though) and have autoimmune conditions. I am more scared of covid than the jab. I also think that if I get down to just overweight, doable as BMI is 30, I will reduce my risk of blood clots.

theotherfossilsister · 07/04/2021 11:41

Also, I really don't think the risk of the clot is anywhere near as high as the risk of covid-19.

FenceSplinters · 07/04/2021 11:42

I’m not going for the second one. I’ve been ill for three weeks since the first one.

UnderHisAye · 07/04/2021 11:42

Why wouldn't you take the second jab? The risk is tiny.

MoiraNotRuby · 07/04/2021 11:45

I think the second doses will just be delayed but still happen. Pfizer and AZ work in 2 different ways so I would not want to mix them.

I was on the pill for over a decade, there was always a blood clot risk and never any news headlines... its almost like things that affect women don't matter unless they also affect men....

Marcia1989 · 07/04/2021 11:45

If they suspend the jab for particular groups and you're in those groups, it's unlikely you'll be allowed to have it whether you want it or not. I expect you would be offered to start again with a different vaccination.

FanPanCan · 07/04/2021 11:47

I'm having the 2nd jab on Friday. I've had a DVT in the past. I'm not worried.

It really isn't.

ive had my first vaccine AZ, was very ill for well over a week. Felt afterwards was not going to have second jab, but feel now i will especially if eventually wont be allowed to go anywhere with out them both being had.

Government now everyone's abusive partner.
mumsneedwine · 07/04/2021 12:24

Statistically you are more likely to get struck by lightening than get a blood clot after the vaccine.

Robinkitty · 07/04/2021 12:34

I’m in this position. Mid 30’s and I had the vaccine purely because I was in the right place at the right time ( very lucky I thought I was) I had no symptoms but feeling apprehensive and not sure if I will have my second dose. I’m also not sure if I would take another type as mixing vaccines can’t have been investigated?
Personally I would rather take my chances with COVID ( I believe I had it and was very mild) but I’m worrying about vaccines passports and how not being properly vaccinated will affect my job.

It’s looking promising that mixing AZ and Pfizer will result in an even better immune response. Preliminary results due in June:
“Experiments in mice show that combinations of Pfizer and AstraZeneca vaccines boosted immunity better than matching doses of either one”.

IDSNeighbour · 07/04/2021 12:36

Is that actually true, mumneedswine? I feel like people always bring out the 'more likely to be hit by lightning' theory. But really, as someone who lives in the UK, is nervous of lightning and would be extremely unlikely to be outside during a thunderstorm, I feel like my personal chances of being hit by lightning are practucally zero. I appreciate the blood clot risk is also close to zero but, worldwide, the lightning risk is surely much higher for some than others. An average risk statistic doesn't mean much.

I wasn't due to be vaccinated till May or June. I let myself get peer pressured into having a left over AZ jab my cousin brought home from work last night and am massively regretting it. I was really hoping for moderna and not overly keen on any vaccine at all. The others who were there were happy to have it and it only had 30 mins left before going in the bin so i felt too guilty to say no in the end.

It's mainly just because I feel so ill that I wish I hadn't done it but, as someone who lives alone, the blood clot scare stories are worrying me a little bit to be honest. And I'll also be a bit pissed off if I feel this crap for nothing and have to start over with another vaccine.

daisypond · 07/04/2021 12:40

Most people who have had AZ will be older, and the concern is with younger people. I had my first and hope to have the second at the set time. I had no side effects at all with the first, so don’t expect any with the second.

mumsneedwine · 07/04/2021 12:41

@IDSNeighbour here you go. Chances of getting a blood clot is 30 in 20 million ish. Which is about 1 in 700,000. Lightening figures attached 🤷‍♀️

An interesting read for those who think Covid has no consequences for younger women. Note in particular that this lady was eventually found to have blood clots on her lungs, and is now on anti-coagulants.

It's going to be a very fine balance of risk/benefit analysis.

Personally, I have had the first, and will have the second, as I had no side effects at all and am towards the higher age range.

QuarantineQueen · 07/04/2021 12:46

I didn't see that they were thinking of pausing it for high risk groups are they? So second doses should go ahead.

Florelei · 07/04/2021 12:53

@QuarantineQueen I had read that there was some pressure to pause it for the under 50sz

If you’re telling the truth that is absolutely not ok and your cousin should be fired
