Massively regretting the Oxford vaccine

I’m 30, obese and have Lipodemia which can cause blood clots in legs.

I had the jab start of last month, the last week Iv had abit of a tight chest and I can’t really breath in deeply, it hurts and makes me panic Abit.

I’m really worried 😔 my dad has had a stroke due to a blood clot in his leg.

I’m due my second soon and I really don’t want to have it!

Those symptoms you discuss sound like physical manifestations of anxiety. Probably related to worrying about the (extremely low) risk of the vaccine. You would have had a clot by now if it was going to happen. And if you didn’t have a problem with the first shot, it’s even less likely for there to be a problem second time round.

Vickles20 · 06/04/2021 19:22

I think just try to relax and breathe. Keep active. And drink plenty to water. I echo what the previous poster has said

Notthemessiah · 06/04/2021 19:23

Up to you regarding the second but as far as I know, everyone who had this specific issue had it within 16 days of vaccination so it sounds like you are well beyond that already for your first shot.

Newstaronhorizon · 06/04/2021 19:26

Lose some weight and adopt a healthy way of life, then your chances of living a long and happy life will increase as a result and it will decrease your anxiety so win win. Let the second jab be the start of new beginnings for you. Good luck! Smile

DPotter · 06/04/2021 20:04

On the radio this afternoon the report from Germany which has triggered this panic - 2 people in a million have developed blood clots. Very slim chances of it being you.

Have the 2nd jab

DinosaurDiana · 06/04/2021 20:08

You need to consider your chances of getting Covid and how your weight and Lipodemia would affect your outcome, then look at how likely you are to get a clot from your second jab when you weren’t affected by the first.

toocold54 · 06/04/2021 20:11

I do believe if this was a clot you would have known about it by now. Your side effects would have happened at most a couple days later not weeks.
Have you been to a gp? It might be worth checking even if it isn’t related to the vaccination.

If you are that concerned, you should see your GP.

However, your risk of getting a very rare blood clot is massively outweighed by the risk of getting seriously ill and dieing from COVID due to your weight and other co-morbidities.

I say this as someone with lifelong weight issues.

So, please stop listening to the media. Remember they often make a mountain out of a molehill. Listen to the scientists instead instead.

Contraceptive pills can cause fatalities, but they are still used. Cars can crash and kill people, but we still use them.
Food allergies kill people, but we don't ban the main food types that are mainly responsible.

So just try and put things into perspective! Smile

Then hopefully, uour anxiety will lessen, and you will start to breathe more easily.

hedgehogger1 · 06/04/2021 20:12

Your risk of clotting as a result of COVID is higher than your risk with the vaccine

Onjnmoeiejducwoapy · 06/04/2021 20:13

These are the physical symptoms of anxiety.

Enidblyton1 · 06/04/2021 20:16

Can you speak to your doctor for reassurance OP? As others have said, it’s probably anxiety and you would have had problems by now from the first jab if you were going to have any.
I’m not able to quote any stats, but you might be able to look at the relative risk from the vaccine vs your risk if you caught covid. The risk from covid is higher than risk from taking the vaccine. But hopefully a medical professional can reassure you.

AnneLovesGilbert · 06/04/2021 20:19

Have you ever taken the contraceptive pill?

PatchworkElmer · 06/04/2021 20:19

Speak to the GP about chest pains if you’re worried. I’m sure I read that the clots they’re worried about are in the brain though, and we should be on the lookout for headaches that last more than 4 days. Sounds like you’re very anxious and would benefit from talking to the GP anyway tbh.

I had AZ just over a week ago and am concerned too. I am trying to remember that even if the link is proven, the chances are very, very slim indeed.

PintOfBovril · 06/04/2021 20:46

Lipoedema doesn't increase the chances of blood clots.

Chloemol · 06/04/2021 20:47

As I understand it any adverse reaction by way of clots is after the first jab.

As you had yours ages ago you should be fine. With your other health issues you are more likely to suffer badly if you get Covid

Just be aware that Pfizer also causes blood clots as well, but for AZ it’s 000.17% the likelihood of getting Covid is higher than that

PintOfBovril · 06/04/2021 20:51

Sorry posted too soon. Lipoedema doesn't increase the chances of blood clots like those that are potentially being linked to the AZ vaccine. The risk with lipoedema and DVT arises from vascular complications of larger limbs, not the low platelet clots that are being discussed with the AZ jab

Boringlynormal · 06/04/2021 20:52

I completely understand your fear. I'm 10 days post vaccine and a very anxious person at the best of times and this 10 days have been jam packed with every kind of pain and weird physical sensation you can imagine. Logically it's likely that what we are both experiencing is anxiety related. Anxiety is a bastard for physical manifestations but given the situation it really doesn't help, does it?

I'm overweight (not obese but could be within half a stone). I think that once I hopefully get to the 20 day mark ok I will start to focus a lot more on being healthy as it really IS illogical to be this stressed about a rare event but not stressed about the much more common things that could happen to me as a result of being overweight.

Outofplacetoday · 06/04/2021 21:25

Try not to worry.

From what I read all the incidences of clots happened between 6-20 days post vaccine so you're well past that.

Also the contents of the jab are broken down by your body quite quickly so the vaccine doesn't stay in your body ifyswim, it's just your immune cells now have memory of the encounter.

Plus, the rate of clots is about 1 in 500,000 it seems. There's a higher chance of covid killing you so I know which risk I'd rather take.

Lots of medications can cause clotting. How many women take the pill each morning without second thought?

WeeEnglishRose · 06/04/2021 22:06

Speak to your GP.

Rainbowsandstorms · 06/04/2021 22:18

You are now past the at risk period for clots related to the vaccination. If you are concerned about your symptoms though I would give 111 a call for medical advice and they can assess you.

CovoidOfAllHumanity · 06/04/2021 22:25

If it's post 20 days it's very unlikely to be the rare vaccine associated disorder

Also that disorder is not necessarily associated with more usual clotting disorders like PE or DVT. Covid is much more associated with those and the vaccines reduce the risk so it's likely you'd be best off to have your 2nd vaccine

You should see your GP though if you have symptoms that concern you and talk to them about it.

SweetAsANutt · 06/04/2021 22:29

Do you have an oximeter?

I experienced episodes of feeling tight chested and it was horrible. My oxygen levels came up fine I honestly think it was my anxiety. I suffer really bad with anxiety.

Shrivelled · 06/04/2021 22:29

I have a blood clot disorder. OP you’ll know if you’re having a PE as your pulse will be racing or very irregular. Try and relax and take your pulse to reassure you and take some deep breaths. You could get a pulse oximeter for extra reassurance. You’re most probably just feeling anxious. Keeping fit and healthy is most people’s best chance of avoiding blood clots. Lots of very poorly people have had the vaccine without serious side effects, try not to worry.

KeepWashingThoseHands · 06/04/2021 22:37

OP

The following comments are not intended to be hurtful but you need a wake up call. I speak as someone who has experienced several blood clots (not vaccine triggered, contraceptive pill triggered) and take medication for life.

  • you have chest pains for a week and haven’t seen a doctor, why not? unlikely to have a pulmonary embolism and more likely anxiety or something else but you need checking
  • what are you doing to reduce your risk factors for a blood clot outside not having the vaccine? If you are that concerned you need to be proactive with your health. Are you mobile during the day, well hydrated, not taking the pill, a smoker, overweight etc. There are many risk factors outside the vaccine and all more likely to impact you
  • what news sources are you reading to determine the vaccine is statistically a medical risk to you? Have you spoken to a HCP about it

People are v quick to determine and get anxious the vaccine is unhealthy for them, whilst continuing with many things that put them at a higher risk without even taking the vaccine. It’s this you really need to worry about.
