Just thinking we started vaccinating in December, are we going to start all over again this winter do you think, it's going to be a heck of a task to start all over again

I would guess the 2 shot vaccines would be single shot boosters (and we'll have more single shot vaccines) and we'll be starting to administer boosters from full speed and top capacity, and will be manufacturing in-country, so won't have the same type of supply issues...so all will be quicker?

RoseAndRose · 05/04/2021 21:33

It looks as if those in groups 1-4 are likely to get an autumn booster

It's not clear if it will be offered to other groups

ChittyChittyBoomBoom · 05/04/2021 21:34

My sister is a nurse and has been told revaccination is expected to begin in September 😩

Beamur · 05/04/2021 21:38

I think as long as the supply is reliable, the vaccination programme has been rolled out very successfully so far. I would have confidence in it being delivered well in the autumn.

justasking111 · 05/04/2021 21:40

I get the flu jab annually with asthma, gawd having covid jab as well our GP will struggle to cope. They're handing back our conference centre theatre in June who did many thousands of jabs 🙈

If its like the flu shots, then I dont have them religiously every year. In normal times I only get them every two years as I figure there cant be that many dangerous mutations each year. I guess it will all settle out in time. I'm due my second dose in May so I wont be rushing out for a 2021 booster ( disclaimer- I have had covid so it would need to be several mutations away to make me seriously ill)

So over 70 and care homes residents

My FIL is 74 and has been told he’ll likely be called for a booster in Sept/Oct. He gets the flu jab around the same time each year too, he’s convinced he’ll have them together.

Boph · 05/04/2021 21:47

A lot more than over 70 and care home residents in groups 1 to 4.
It includes NHS staff and pharmacists. Also the CEV. 32 million in all I think.

RoseAndRose · 05/04/2021 21:50

No, not just them, all of groups 1-4.

That's care home residents and staff, NHS staff, the CEV and everyone else over 70.

everyonecanjustfeckoff · 05/04/2021 21:55

Definitely the frontline NHS healthcare professionals will need vaccinating for every new variant of concern that takes off in the UK.
And ideally their poor families who (in the absence of quarantine hotels in the UK for Covid-positive patients, like most other countries have) get a massive exposure to whatever nasty virus is in the hospital at any one time.

Buzzinwithbez · 05/04/2021 21:55

Wondering how boosters will work. Whether they'll be able to stick to the same make of vaccine since they're different technologies. Or might someone who had Pfizer need a complete course of two of a different brand if they can't have the Pfizer one.

everyonecanjustfeckoff · 05/04/2021 21:58

And since hardly anyone has been to their GP or had any meaningful tests, or even had their weight recorded by the GP (including me who is edging ever nearer the BMI of 40 due to this shitty life remedied only by food). The group 4/CEV group will need to be flexible to accommodate people who have new risk factors (or newly morbidly obese...)

HolmeH · 05/04/2021 22:01

Aren’t the boosters likely to be one shot? Which will make it much quicker & simpler. I imagine they might give them alongside the flu so it’s one appointment maybe?

Mylittlesandwich · 05/04/2021 22:04

Morbid obesity puts you into group 6. It's classed as an underlying health condition but does not make you CEV.
justasking111 · 05/04/2021 22:10

Well the first Astra zeneca jab made me feel ugh, ditto the flu jab once. Don't really fancy having them together.

OP posts:
Totallyworthit · 06/04/2021 08:59

If you have them together justasking then you only feel awful once instead of twice.

RoseWineTime · 06/04/2021 09:05

They are currently trialling giving the flu vaccine with the second covid vaccine here in Bristol.

ChocOrange1 · 06/04/2021 09:26

There is a big overlap between flu jab candidates and covid jab candidates (groups 1-4). They already get everyone in for their flu jab over the winter so surely they would just do the covid jab at the same time.

No need to keep giving boosters to people who are under 30 or otherwise very low risk.

frozendaisy · 06/04/2021 09:33

32 million is groups 1-9.
Boph · 06/04/2021 12:44

Yes of course!
I read recent reports that vaccine is less effective in the obese, so they may need adding to the booster group.

Dobbyafreeelf · 06/04/2021 12:50

I suspect that in time it will be given as a combined shot with flu for the vulnerable groups.
I imagine this winter it might be separate jabs but going forwards that's what I would expect.

Presumably there will be long term testing in the general population to try and establish how long immunity is lasting and perhaps booster jabs every few years for all?

Boph · 06/04/2021 15:39

There are several studies ongoing. I'm in one and having monthly antibody tests.

Totallyworthit · 06/04/2021 22:04

That interesting @Boph do you get the monthly results or not?

winkingeyealcoholsuggestion · 06/04/2021 22:29

A fair amount of the flu jab list won't have been offered the vaccine yet so it would be an odd step to bundle them both together for boosters, unless they admit they made a mistake with group 6.
