Both us getting vaccine at the same time?

IloveSooty424 · 05/04/2021 13:13

My DH and I both got contacted by our GP practice to book our vaccines this week, we’re 42. My mum had the AZ vaccine and had horrendous side effects that kept her in bed for a day and half. My sister who is younger than me also had side effects, mainly a very high temperature and shivering.

My question is that we have a 7 year old and are thinking that we shouldn’t book on the same day in case we both have bad side effects. We have no family living near us or help with childcare. I’m just thinking how far apart to book them. Has anyone else found that they’ve been unable to cope looking after DC after having the vaccine?

I don’t know why but I’m feeling really nervous about getting the vaccine now it’s my turn. I’m definitely having it and just want to get it over and done with really.

I slept pretty much the whole day the day after my jab, but was fine after that. I would probably stagger them if possible, but if it means you go to the back of the queue I would risk having them the same day.

trunumber · 05/04/2021 13:16

Truthfully we worried about this too (and also staggered our planned flu vaccines) but I don't know anyone who was so out of it they couldn't care for their kid (and I mostly know parents with toddlers, not a 7yr old who could mostly manage with a parent lying on the sofa for the day)

Personally I would just take them when they're offered but I understand your worry

AnyFucker · 05/04/2021 13:16

You should be fine. I would just get it over with. I had some side effects and my H had none. Unless you are both hospitalised (vanishingly unlikely) I am sure a 7yo can be planted in front of Mr Disney for a day while you both loll on a sofa.

whatswithtodaytoday · 05/04/2021 13:17

We're planning to get it on different days, as we have a two year old. I'm a year older and we have different GPs though so will mostly likely get called at different times.

Most of my late 30s/early 40s friends have felt rough for 12-48 hours after, so it's probably sensible to avoid it if you can.

Ikeatears · 05/04/2021 13:17

I had Pfizer and had no side effects. Dh had Az and was offside for about 24 hours. He did go to bed for a couple of hours in the day but if he'd been the only parent there he could have managed. Most people I've spoken to after Az have been similar to dh.
Unless you're very unlucky, I think it's unlikely that both of you will be so poorly that you couldn't manage to look after your 7 year old. That being said, if one of you can have it 48 hours later, I would think you should be safe.

As a nurse all of my colleagues have had both vaccines. Some have had side effects, mostly the ones who have had covid previously. Nothing that they had to phone in sick for work with.
My mother and father and my in laws have had the vaccine as well as my 3 grandparents and sister. Out of them my sister had side effects over night and felt rough the next day but still was able to take my niece to and from school and work from home. Hope this helps

Lone parents have this issue and just have to manage.

Mistressinthetulips · 05/04/2021 13:32

I'm in bed currently one day post vaccine, not feeling great at all. Was fine until this morning, so I got some jobs I needed to do done last night before it hit me.
You could make up a couple of packed lunch boxes and get in easy snacks for your dd just in case.
Though if dh was ill too that would annoy me as I want to stretch out in bed and be miserable in peace Grin

MixedUpFiles · 05/04/2021 13:33

I’d try to stagger by a week if you can, a few days will also probably be enough. Work advised us to not schedule anything important for the 2 days after in case we need to take the days off. .

puffinkoala · 05/04/2021 13:36

I think with a 7 year old you'll be fine. If you had a 18 month old I'd probably try to stagger.

shouldistop · 05/04/2021 13:46

A 7 year old will be fine if you both feel ill.

Dh and I are only in our 30s so won't be called for a while, we've got a baby and a pre-schooler so I was thinking the other day we probably shouldn't go on the same day.

IloveSooty424 · 05/04/2021 13:47

This really helps thanks. I think I will stagger by a few days if possible.

@puffinkoala I know single parents have to cope. My mum was a single parent so I know how tough it is. I think single parents have been totally forgotten about throughout this pandemic. I’ll never forget Johnson’s face when asked at a press conference how single parents are meant to cope with working with schools closed. You could tell by the expression on his face the thought had never crossed his mind!

We had ours together and both had zero symptoms, AZ vaccine

Whatisgoingon89 · 05/04/2021 13:48

I have heard AZ side effects are worse but my partner and I both had Pfizer on the same day and we were fine.

Bluntness100 · 05/04/2021 13:49

I think it would be incredibly rare for you both to be so ill you couldn’t look after your child. It’s like saying you couldn’t look after rhem if you both get a mild cold, which is very much likely the worst that it will be like.

IloveSooty424 · 05/04/2021 13:49

Sorry that was aimed at FAQs!

My 7 year old will entertain himself on his tablet, watch tv or play with Lego for hours. He’ll just need meals making. I really want to get it over with. We’ll probably go together. We would very unlucky to both be incredibly ill. I have a feeling my DH will be fine and I’ll be the one laid up on the sofa!

I had AZ and had a sore arm for about 5 days afterwards. Same with my DH and my brother.

Obviously some people genuinely do get side affects, but in my experience I have certainly been able to predict those of my friends / acquaintances who I just know will be affected.

CatbellsQueen · 05/04/2021 14:00

Affected in a bad way I mean, other than mild things like a sore arm

CosmicComfort · 05/04/2021 14:02

I had Pfizer and felt unwell after my second but worked through it.

DH had AZ and felt unwell after his first dose but carried on working. Not had second yet.

Side effects are generally mild.

mnistooaddictive · 05/04/2021 14:04

Personally I would go with different days, just to be sure. Some people have a lot of side effects and I wouldn’t put myself under extra pressure for a day or 2.

x2boys · 05/04/2021 14:08

I had mine 10 minutes before DH had his we both had the Pfizer, neither of us had side affects other than being a bit tired ,my youngest is 10 but has severe autism and learning disabilities so more like a toddler , hopefully you won't suffer any side affects.

Kidssendingmenuts · 05/04/2021 14:09

I was worried about side effects too, made sure I'd done by shopping. Cleaned the house. Kids at there dads. Had the AZ one and day after nothing! I expected to wake up like death but apart from a sore arm I was absolutely fine and did a 5k run 🤣🤣. I'm 38 and honestly I was disappointed I wasn't ill in a way as I'd prepared to be! X

EffOrf · 05/04/2021 14:09

I felt awful for about 24 hrs but I would have been able to watch a child of 7 and give it simple meals.

JorisBonson · 05/04/2021 14:10

I was in bed for 2 days after my AZ jab. DH had a sore arm for a few hours and that was it. You don't know how you're going to react so not worth stressing over.
