Both us getting vaccine at the same time?

IloveSooty424 · 05/04/2021 13:13

My DH and I both got contacted by our GP practice to book our vaccines this week, we’re 42. My mum had the AZ vaccine and had horrendous side effects that kept her in bed for a day and half. My sister who is younger than me also had side effects, mainly a very high temperature and shivering.

My question is that we have a 7 year old and are thinking that we shouldn’t book on the same day in case we both have bad side effects. We have no family living near us or help with childcare. I’m just thinking how far apart to book them. Has anyone else found that they’ve been unable to cope looking after DC after having the vaccine?

I don’t know why but I’m feeling really nervous about getting the vaccine now it’s my turn. I’m definitely having it and just want to get it over and done with really.

We thought about this as have a two year old but ended up booking for the same slot to get it over with, had the AZ, dosed up on paracetamol as told to and it was fine. I had no side effects at all, DH had a sore arm after 48 hours. No drama.

simbobs · 05/04/2021 14:18

Try and shop beforehand, or cook something reheat able, so that is one less thing to worry about. You obviously have legitimate concerns so plan for the worst and hope for the best. I had no side effects from the AZ jab and DH was just a little fluey. Dsis felt a bit off, but Dbro was fine. Not everyone feels poorly, even within the same family.

I think it’d be sensible to have it at least a few days apart; after mine I looked after my two DC but if I could have done I’d much rather have spent the day in bed. If you do have it on the same day you’ll cope but it’d just be nicer to be able to rest while the other looks after your DS

AprilFoolaround · 05/04/2021 14:20

Single mum of 3 (one of them 6) and had horrendous vomiting, fever, shakes, chills and a splitting head and face pain followed by body aches. The TV and iPad came in very handy. I'm sure between the two of you you'll manage just fine. Unless your DH is someone who when ill lies around like a dying swan proclaiming he's too ill to lift a finger.

GrumpyHoonMain · 05/04/2021 14:21

I was in bed for a day and a half afterwards but still took care of my 15 mth old.

AnExcellentWalker · 05/04/2021 14:22

It was for this reason that DH & I chose to have it a few days apart, we could have got them at the same time. I'm disabled, he's my carer, & we have a child. In the end, although I had some side effects, they were only moderate & his were extremely mild.

WombatChocolate · 05/04/2021 14:26

Well if you want to book a couple of days apart and can do so, then do so.

This seems to be like hyper-planning to me, but fair play if you’re that organised.

Most people seem to have felt a bit grotty who had effects, but it doesn’t sOund like they were totally wiped out by it. But if you want to be extra cautious, there’s nothing to lose by being so.

Remember, loads don’t get any symptoms at all.

DarceyDashwood · 05/04/2021 14:37

By chance myself and my husband were both offered it a week apart. In hindsight I’m glad it worked out like that as although neither of us felt particularly unwell, we weee definitely not 100% for a couple of days afterwards and it was nice both being able to let the other lead on parenting! Having said that, had we both have had it on the same day we would have been able to cope! It was just nice not having to!

ShopTattsyrup · 05/04/2021 14:44

I had Pfizer and my only side effect was a completely dead and stiff arm both times, lasted 24-48 hours ... could have looked after a child but a baby/toddler still wanting to be held/picked up would have entailed some very one handed affection!

tf23 · 05/04/2021 14:49

We both had the AZ vaccine. I had a 12 hour headache which felt ok once I'd taken some paracetamol. My husband had no side effects at all. I think you'll be fine, as you say, 7 year olds can entertain themselves pretty well if you can sort out meals.

Stillgoings · 05/04/2021 14:58

Stagger it a couple of days if you can but you might be just fine. Me and my dh were both ok,no major side effects or time off work to repoet

HappydaysArehere · 05/04/2021 15:03

We both had the phfizer (2 jabs each). Nothing at all.

bigbluebus · 05/04/2021 15:07

DH had Pfizer and I had Astra Zeneca. Neither of us had more than a slightly sore arm.

muddledmidget · 05/04/2021 15:12

I felt rubbish for 24 hours after mine, (az) but was still well enough to do a 10 hour shift at work. If you get the opportunity to stagger them it's probably not a bad idea, but I think I'd just plan ahead, get some paracetamol and an easy dinner in and muddle through it. I don't know of anyone who has been unable to function for days afterwards, in fact, the only people I know who have taken to their beds/taken the day off are those that are in a position to be able to (ie no young children and not working the next day), everybody else has just got on with life (work in healthcare and know about 250 people who have had the az vaccine!

Juo · 05/04/2021 15:26

I think you are over worrying about this. The side effects might be zero or they might be a bit unpleasant for 24 hours. They are not going to render two adults incapable of looking after a child!

Mistressinthetulips · 05/04/2021 15:31

I'm lying in bed and have just worked up from yet more sleep - I would struggle if alone here with the dc but could lie on the couch instead of in bed and get through it that way. Depends on how "old" the 7 year old is iyswim.

Frazzled2207 · 05/04/2021 15:47

i'd probably try and stagger by 2/3 days if you can. I had absolutely zero side effects though.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 05/04/2021 15:54

Everyone I have know with side effects has still managed to parent and feed everyone. Batch cook if you are really worried so it only has to be heated up.

murasaki · 05/04/2021 15:59

I had a slightly sore arm on AZ, but am not entirely convinced that it wasn't psychosomatic.

ifonly4 · 05/04/2021 16:15

I felt sick, then tired and a dull headache for a few days. I managed to work. DH had shivers, felt tired, said he felt like he had flu - he's a worker and carried on. I know quite a few who've had the AZ vaccine with no side effects.

I'd say you'd be very unlucky to feel so had that you can't keep an eye on your DC in the same room, rummage up a basis meal.

Hope you'll both be ok,

Hall84 · 05/04/2021 16:31

Me & DH (30s) got a spare dose last Wednesday so no choice with split appointments and a 1year old. Fortunately both had mild side effects, a bit shivery the following day and my sore arm lasted until yesterday.

IloveSooty424 · 05/04/2021 17:06

Thanks for your input everyone. It’s very reassuring that side effects were mostly mild from the AZ vaccine. I expect we will be offered AZ but we won’t know until we get there. I’m only really worried because my mum had such a bad reaction with vomiting and being unable to function but she has underlying health conditions which I don’t.

My son has only recently turned 7 but is very good at entertaining himself. When he was a toddler my DH and I had food poisoning which was the most ill I’ve ever been. Between us though we coped and managed to look after. I’m sure it won’t be as bad as that!

I will phone in the morning and see if we can get an appointment a couple of days apart, if not we’ll go together.
