To wonder about UK reporting of AZ side effects?

Latest news suggests Germany has had 31 cases of rare blood clots and 9 deaths in 2.7m vaccinations with Astra Zeneca, but nothing close to that seems to be happening in UK. AIBU to wonder whether UK govt. is not being fully transparent as they don’t want a mass revolt with their “all eggs in the AZ basket” approach?

That’s from Reuters and completely different to Germany who are saying nearly all cases were in women.
Yes so different
Really think we need to see number off doses given to men under 55, women under 55 and cases for each country that has administered as uk has done a lot if az but have they done more under 55's than germany , I don't know

I was wondering the same OP - since the UK has done several times the amount of vaccines that Germany has, wouldn't we have seen several times the incidence of this rare blood clotting condition? But then I thought, actually, this is something that apparently affects younger women, and at this point the vast majority of younger women that have been vaccinated in the UK and Germany are healthcare workers who were high priority in both countries - so till now the vaccine take up will have been similar in both countries? So it wouldn't necessarily be any more than the 30 or so in Germany, even though they have vaccinated far fewer people.

In the UK, five cases of CSVT - one of them fatal - have been recorded among 11 million people who received the vaccine

I’ll take my chances with that.

I thought that data released actually suggested lower rates of clots than usual?

womanity · 31/03/2021 08:18

@BusyLizzie61

I thought that data released actually suggested lower rates of clots than usual?
I think it’s lower rates of any kind of blood clot at all but ?more of this particular type of very rare blood clot.

But I think that’s part of what they appear to not be being particularly forthright about. (Not a scientist and now paying particularly close attention til right now, so that’s just my very quick assessment of the situation.)
@iolaus are you saying you reported before jan and not included or you reported after jan ?
It was reported after January

I'm saying the headline is very misleading

Regardless of whether or not this issue has a causative link to the vaccinations, your theory of conspiracy falls down in your assertion that the UK has put all its eggs in the AZ basket - have you forgotten that huge numbers of Pfizer vaccines have been administered (in fact with a slightly higher incidence of these coagulation issues), and we also have large numbers of doses of both Moderna and Novavax on order? We’ve ordered enough of the latter two to vaccinate everyone who is currently unvaccinated, without needing to extend AZ to them at all.

I have been pondering this and wonder if the UK might start to see more now it vaccinates younger people?

I want to know the risk for my age group and not for older people. This is how I will decide to have the vaccine.

And it certainly won’t be because people tell me the risk of blood clots from the pill or covid is higher. I don’t take the pill and of the young people I know with covid, not a blood clot have I seen

Oh no now I’m worried. I’m in my 40s, female, fit, healthy etc, had the AZ two weeks ago and had a splitting headache afterwards. It’s still there slightly on the side I had the jab as well as a slightly stiff neck.

I’m beginning to wish I’d not had it:(
Am I at risk??
This www.ema.europa.eu/en/news/covid-19-vaccine-astrazeneca-benefits-still-outweigh-risks-despite-possible-link-rare-blood-clots
is from the EMA and is very informative. We need to talk about this sensibly. It is still the best idea to get the vaccine, but we also need to be vigilent about symtoms of side effects. They now have a protocol of what to try if they see these side effects and can probably avoid deaths. But even the EMA want people to be vigilent if you experience:
breathlessness,
pain in the chest or stomach,
swelling or coldness in a leg,
severe or worsening headache or blurred vision after vaccination,
persistent bleeding,
multiple small bruises, reddish or purplish spots, or blood blisters under the skin.
A severe headache is not a good sign and I wouldn't dismiss it. They can run tests and rule out anything serious. We need to look after each other but also ourselves.

I’m sure I’ve read somewhere (no idea where, probably MN) that the Pfizer vaccine has similar figures re blood clots?

confuseddotcomma · 31/03/2021 12:17

In the UK the vast majority of young people who have been vaccinated are NHS workers, who mostly had Pfizer
