Parents no longer allowed to sing at parent and baby groups

I have no energy left to say how much this angers me

OP posts:

I’ve never been to a group where a parent/caregiver is bellowing at the top of their lungs.

There used to be a mum at one I went to who would belt out 'I'm a little a teapot' like she was Maria fucking Callas.

HedgeSparrows · 30/03/2021 16:13

If it were me, I would be delighted OP Grin
its cringe-worthy...

Downtown36 · 30/03/2021 16:19

Of course it’s not a ‘human right’ but, I will not be ‘grateful’ for the ‘privilege’ of going to a baby music class after a year of restrictions when the data now shows how low cases are, how thankfully even lower death rates are and how such a big proportion of the adult population has received at least one vaccine.

JammyDodgersandPeas · 30/03/2021 16:31

Baby groups were allowed to sing with mitigations in place when we reopened in Sept - all parents strictly 2m apart, all facing the same direction, singing down to their baby rather than singing at a group volume, every window and door open - so pretty cold in a church hall in the winter! It's shame that these mitigations now won't be enough.

As a baby class teacher I really really hope this doesn't put people off from coming. The whole industry (and its bigger than you might think - estimated at 30,000 businesses I believe) has been hit hard and its an industry mainly made up of self employed mums who haven't necessarily been eligible for support 😔

JammyDodgersandPeas · 30/03/2021 16:33

And it's not necessarily 15 parents and children in the room, that's the maximum. I'm at less than half my previous capacity, and well below. 15 families, in order to comply with social distancing.

moochingtothepub · 30/03/2021 16:34

At least they can meet, choirs haven't been able to sing together for over a year

sherrystrull · 30/03/2021 16:38

It's very sad. We aren't singing inside at school with my ks1 class and I miss it so much. However, if it means the potential spread of covid is reduced then I'd rather not sing than have the school closed.

Fafferly · 30/03/2021 16:41

If it was anything like the baby group I went to, that's great news. One opera singer mum used to make it very difficult for the rest of us!

Ohgoodness34 · 30/03/2021 16:42

Yes, same with churches, funerals etc. I think most of us got our heads round this a year ago.

HastingsIsSuckingDiesel · 30/03/2021 16:43

With everything that is going on in the world at the moment, surely mums not singing at baby group is not something to get worked up or angry about??

Downtown36 · 30/03/2021 16:51

@JammyDodgersandPeas it absolutely does not put me off, the brilliant people leading these groups are doing the very best they can. I will continue to support our local group led by a very talent lady.

Violetlavenders · 30/03/2021 17:04

Why get so angry, at least you can sing to your baby at home.

This.

DarkishBlue · 30/03/2021 17:09

Can't you all hum instead? Humming's great. I hum all day at home.
Just hum twinkle twinkle little star as loud as you can and see how great that makes you feel.

Barbie222 · 30/03/2021 17:20

This will be a blessed relief to most parents won't it?

BluntlySpoken · 30/03/2021 17:26

But come June time surely they'll allow it if bars etc can have karaoke.

World gone mad.
Comefromaway · 30/03/2021 19:23

So I’ve just seen the original updated guidance only just released that’s caused this.

Parents at baby/toddler groups won’t be able to sing but the group leader and children will be.

jessstan2 · 30/03/2021 19:31

I had no idea parents sang at baby groups!

Violetlavenders · 30/03/2021 19:33

Parents at baby/toddler groups won’t be able to sing but the group leader and children will be.

The poor parents, they'll get bombarded with virus particles from the leader and all the other children, none of whom will be vaccinated yet...!

ColourfulElmerElephant · 30/03/2021 19:33

I used to get angry about incredibly ridiculous things like this when I had a little baby. It was PND. OP, I genuinely don’t mean to patronise you but your reaction is unbelievably ott, enough to make me think there must be a lot more to it.

tappitytaptap · 30/03/2021 19:37

I have been (other than in the lockdowns) to face to face baby singing classes (it’s the entire point of the class, the singing....) throughout lockdown. Is this a new thing?

Chickenriceandpeas · 30/03/2021 20:04

Op I agree with you. I lost my shit today when I took my DD to a (freezing cold, outdoor) pool where she got told off for swimming BACKSTROKE (cos backstroke, along with singing, KILLS PEOPLE dontyouknow)

It’s fucking mental. The rates are tiny - TINY. The changes of anyone even having it in the baby group are minimal, let alone it being spread from Wind the Bobbin up. Anyone who thinks this is a danger is completely crazy.

89redballoons · 30/03/2021 20:13

Is there updated guidance on this? I'm meant to be taking my toddler to an outside baby music class tomorrow.

ThisIsMeOrIsIt · 30/03/2021 20:16

Could you link, please? I run an outdoor parent and toddler group so would be very interested in seeing updated guidance but for some reason I've always found it hard to find the bit of guidance I need.
