Household members of immunosuppressed prioritised

Orangesandlemons77 · 29/03/2021 17:02

Just seen this in the news, might be of use to others

Those who live with someone who has a weakened immune system are to be prioritised for coronavirus vaccines.

It is hoped that the move will help to limit infections in immunosuppressed adults, such as those with blood cancer, HIV or patients receiving chemotherapy, who are less able to fight infections naturally.

Independent experts on the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) said that people over the age of 16 who are living with an adult with a weakened immune system should be prioritised for their vaccine.

I wonder how they will do it. For instance I go to a different gp practice than the rest of my family. So they won't have a flag on their system that they are part of my household.

Orangesandlemons77 · 29/03/2021 18:58

It's like this for the flu jab. I don't understand why they didn't do it from the start.

Is it authorised for 16-18 yr olds then? We have Dc age 16 will they get it I wonder.

@Orangesandlemons77
Your dc can have the phizer vaccine as it's licensed for over 16s in fact my dd whose 17 had it last week.

Ok, thanks maybe I will ask the GP.

@Orangesandlemons77 it's supposed to be like this but in practice some GPs don't even manage to prioritise those who are immunocompromised let alone their families and they have to fight for their flu jab. The records aren't as joined up as they should be.
Thankfully my hospital decided to run a joint monitoring and vaccine clinic to cover those who were falling through the cracks (quite a few from what they were saying) and I got mine there. DH is a dr so got his at work.

They did do it from the start - in the sense that household members of the CEV were put in group 6 of the draft MHRA/JCVI categorisation.

The suspended, pending evidence of impact of vaccine on transmission. It's been a long wait for re-instatement!

And as new bookings for first shots are partly suspended (taking effect from the day they announced the reinstatement) then it might be a little while before you can secure appointments.

It's all over-16s in, I think all CEV households, though as the announcement cement is in terms of the immunosupressed, it might be only that subset of CEV (eg blood cancers, other cancers on treatment, transplant recipients, other major immune system conditions, or immune suppressing drugs)

PinkPlantCase · 30/03/2021 08:29

I have a family member who’s consultant wrote a letter recommending that all family who they may have close contact with should have the vaccine ASAP as it’s effectiveness on the immunocompromised person was unknown.

This letter was then shown to different GP surgeries and allowed family members who have contact in a caring/welfare capacity to have to have the vaccine early.

Hope that helps!

Orangesandlemons77 · 30/03/2021 09:58

I rang the GP who told me although DH was CEV due to this household members are not prioritised, that was about a month ago.

We are in this situation but have different GP surgeries. The surgeries are just passing the buck to each other.

Schulte · 30/03/2021 11:36

In the same boat. Delighted when I saw the news yesterday and have emailed my surgery but no reply yet. It was very difficult to convince them that immunosuppressed DH needed the jab despite a letter from his hospital consultant, so I'm not holding my breath. Wondering if it might be possible to book via the national booking website as an 'unpaid carer' and then take the consultant letter along to prove I live with an immunosuppressed patient? Has anyone tried this?

Thatwentbadly · 30/03/2021 12:49

@schulte that’s worth a try.

Yes, that's what yesterday's announcement changed.

This is a double win, because it means a) that the most vulnerable (who may well not form a good vaccine response themselves) are buttressed by household vaccinations and b) there is good evidence of useful effect on transmission (the condition for re-instatement)

I saw this yesterday, so tried to book them all in online and I could. My husband is just under 50 so I had been trying to book him most days and had tried in the morning yesterday and couldn't book him, last night I booked him and my adult children who live with me. They are all in later today. I'm guessing the GP I'm with flagged them on the system so it allowed them to book straight away. I did ask my best friend who is a similar age to my husband to try (same area but different GP) and she couldn't so it wasn't a glitch in the system.

Orangesandlemons77 · 30/03/2021 14:49

Interesting. When I try and book for my 16 yr old son it says

"According to your vaccination records, you have been allocated a coronavirus vaccine not currently available through this booking service.

Contact your GP surgery for advice on how to book your vaccination appointment"

(when I try and book him online)

@redcherries did you have to select anything specially when you booked? My dd has been trying without success, so I've suggested she contact her gp surgery.

Redcherries · 30/03/2021 18:59

@OhYouBadBadKitten no, previously when I tried booking my husband it went to the screen where you can select carer, social care etc but last night they all went straight from confirming postcode to choosing postcode area for where you would go. I. Hoping I don’t have 3 of them with side effects tomorrow, all went well at the vaccine centre.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 30/03/2021 19:34

Thanks!
Good luck for tomorrow! The most ice cream shod go to the least moany!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 30/03/2021 19:34

Should not shod!

alpenguin · 30/03/2021 19:49

Great for adult householders. Crap when the other householders are at nursery or school.

I’m currently on my second round of covid caught from preschool child after nursery outbreak, 6 weeks after having had my first vaccination Hmm Thankfully was much MUCH less drastic than first time last year.

Butterflytown · 31/03/2021 23:21

Has anyone managed to book on this basis for household members? I’m cev (shielding group) due to lung and kidney disease and am on immunosuppressant medication. I called both my GP and 119 yesterday and neither knew anything about this. There is nothing on my husband’s medical records to say he lives with an immunocompromised person so not sure how we’re going to be able to get him booked in. I tried booking via the vaccination link but as he’s under 50, not cev/ cv himself and isn’t a frontline healthcare worker or carer so it says he’s not eligible to book.

CimCardashian · 31/03/2021 23:51

I daren’t call my GP surgery as in massive letters on the website it says DO NOT CALL ABOUT VACCINES.
DP is immune suppressed so is about to have his 2nd jab.
I’m very keen to have the jab obviously (aren’t we all) and not sure what to do.

FigDate · 01/04/2021 07:31

I posted this on another thread yesterday...
So spoke to DH’s doctors today. They have been advised that those living with an immunosuppressed person should book by ticking the option for ‘carer of clinically vulnerable person’. Then take evidence of the immunosuppressed person. So I’ve booked vaccine for me for tomorrow and I’m taking a print out of my husband’s medical record that says he has psoriatic arthritis and is on methotrexate (immunosuppressant), ID and marriage certificate (just in case!)

In addition to this Dr Sarah Jarvis on BBC breakfast has said this morning that codes will be manually put on records! She did have a slight look in her face that she wasn’t sure and was best guessing though because Charlie put her on the spot asking what the process was. However, even if that is correct, there’s no way anyone is going to put a code on my record as I’m registered at a different practice to my DH.
I will update you if I manage to get my vaccine this morning.

That's very helpful FigDate. Good luck today!
