Vaccine Envy

Mostly lighthearted, delighted for everyone who has had their jab, and no reason to be scared of covid any more than most... but

Almost everyone I know has had or has booked at least their first jab.

Obviously my mum and MIL. So relieved for them.

Doctor, dentist, nurse friends now having their second jabs.

Sibling is a social worker, right band to get theirs, although currently working entirely at home at the moment.

All my local friends are a few months older than me, so over 50.

My London friends are under 50, but have had theirs.

My cousins, other siblings and other friends are in their 40s and have had theirs.

I'm 49. Asthmatic but controlled. Key worker out at work every day throughout every lockdown, including visiting vulnerable but not NHS or Carer so don't count (I can and do social distance).

Keep telling myself I'm lucky to be too young, too fit, no caring responsibilities, in a job where I can social distance (in fact, in a job at all right now!) but everyone around me talks about their jabs, reactions, and now about their second jabs! Pure jealousy!

What are people actually envious of that they may get ill ? Nobody is forcing anyone to mix if you are worried stay home but good god 12 months on vaccinated or not let’s get back to some normality. You’ll get you vaccine eventually and less of the envy .

In a nutshell, yes.

I'm 48, DH 47. I'm obese with high BP.

We can't just hunker down as we have two teens at different secondaries in high risk areas, and I work in a school. One already bought Covid home and I'm hoping my asthmatic son doesn't. But by being at two large schools (three including mine) , we are effectively mixing with hundreds of people.

DH also due back at his office.

I think the best way to view it is that ever person who gets vaccinated is reducing the risk of further spread and therefore protecting you too.

LacyEdge · 28/03/2021 18:07
@LacyEdge you can put yourself down as an unpaid carer on the NHS vaccination booker website and book your appointment today. There is no question in your circumstances that you need it.
Wow, really? Thank you. I will take a look on there and try it.

Exactly.

I think those who are saying that their area is on the over 40s so there there it will all be fine are missing the point

Vaccine supplies are supposed to drop next week. The pace will fall. I doubt many areas will just be about catch up. Otherwise this wouldn’t be the case

Avidreader12 · 28/03/2021 20:24

The government have said there’s enough vaccines to meet the 2nd appointment demand and if you are eligible on first 1-9 groups you can book now. With the medina vaccine extra doses due in 2 weeks I think it’s just scaremongering that rollout will be significantly delayed.

Quaagars · 28/03/2021 21:12

Most of my family (parents, MIL, aunties, uncles, etc all been vaccinated_ and now DH and a lot of my friends as well as they're 50 or over.
I'm not envious though, I'll take mine when it comes but not fussed either way!

MumofSpud · 28/03/2021 21:16

Yes, I don't begrudge anyone getting the vaccine but when I know of people younger than me (with NO underlying health conditions and not key workers etc) I must admit I am a bit envious!
My friend texted me yesterday as she was in a queue for her second jab (only reason she has had it is that her sister is a GP).Envy

Rainbowsandstorms · 29/03/2021 00:02

@LacyEdge have a look at the criteria but if your Mum has cancer she will be classified as clinically extremely vulnerable and if you’re helping her and taking her to appointments etc you will classify as an unpaid carer and will be able to book on the national site. You could take one of her appointment letters with you to your appointment or her shielding letter if she has one as proof. Alternatively ask her GP to flag you up as a carer on the system.

Firebird83 · 29/03/2021 00:06

My sibling in his 20s has just had his. He is a non-NHS key worker.

middleager · 29/03/2021 16:29

I'm really pissed off today. One of my sons is facing his 7th self isolation as a vaccine refuser parent has tested positive. My son sits next to the boy.

My son has had Covid (caught at school) so hoping he doesn't catch it again.
However, this is a stark reminder that we are effectively mixing with hundreds of families as my teens attend two different schools in high risk areas with poor vaccine take up.

If my other son brings it home and he's had three SIs) then me, 48, and DH, 47 feel helpless.

Having the vaccination would have a huge difference on our lives. We've had 9 occasions now, possibly 10, where one of our kids is SI. Each time wondering if it's in the house.

Oh blimey you’ve had such a bad run 😫

We’re still at no periods of SI in London. It really shows when generally cases are higher in community.

How do you know she’s a vaccine refuser? And would she have even been offered the vaccine by now anyway?

I know he's a vaccine refuser as the son (y10) told my son the family has not had the vaccine and won't be having it.

We live in an area of poor take up in some parts of the community, which has been publicised.

Thanks for your concern though.

middleager · 29/03/2021 17:51

Thanks Marsha

Confused it was just a question.

Duckyneedsaclean · 29/03/2021 23:56

@middleager you mean the boy your son sits next to has tested positive as well as his parent? Otherwise your son won't have to isolate?

WombatChocolate · 30/03/2021 18:27

A success for us today, after feeling so disappointed that DH -49 had probably missed out on jab until May after the deadly was announced 10 days ago.

Really wasn't happy to claim to be an unpaid carer as isn't.
But today, he rang the local pharmacy who has been giving jabs at 5.30, knowing they close at 6. Mentioned he is 49 and can be there within 5 mins and asked if by any chance they had any spares today or could add him to a reserve list for future days. They quizzed him about age and then said they had just one spare and if he leapt in the car and got down there now he could have it. We whizzed down there and were home again with 20 mins. Absolutely amazing. Am thrilled.

Is this something those of you close to the age cut off could try? I think often there are one or 2 spares at the end of the day from no-shoes or just not the exact number of bookings to fit with the doses per vial. If you can be there fast, are close to the cut off age anyway (and they can see it when they draw up your NHS record and might ask for ID) and ask politely and without pressure or expectation, I think they would love to give it to people who need it and not bin it. In fact they are strongly encouraged to.

Just a Thought...hope it works for some of you too.

IloveJKRowling · 30/03/2021 19:10

One way to think about it is that the more people vaccinated, the better for everyone

This isn't true though if those who are vaccinated mix more, in fact quite the opposite.

I resent having to send my kids into schools with no protections against covid (30 to a class, virtually sitting in each others laps it's so crowded) while I'm unvaccinated. I'm exactly the age most at risk of long covid. Especially when so many others have had at least one vaccine and are taking this as their cue to mix.

dcb2 · 30/03/2021 21:10

Wombatchocolate that's how my husband received his (46). Asked if we could go on the reserve list at a local pharmacy, thought nothing would come of it but he was called on Friday and offered one if he could get there in 45 minutes. As were several other 40s.

For the purpose of finding the location of vaccination centres, he went on the NHS booking list and selected carer which brought up the list of local pharmacies etc. He didn't proceed with the booking online at that point obviously.
