Vaccine Envy

Iknowtheanswer · 27/03/2021 13:47

Mostly lighthearted, delighted for everyone who has had their jab, and no reason to be scared of covid any more than most... but

Almost everyone I know has had or has booked at least their first jab.

Obviously my mum and MIL. So relieved for them.

Doctor, dentist, nurse friends now having their second jabs.

Sibling is a social worker, right band to get theirs, although currently working entirely at home at the moment.

All my local friends are a few months older than me, so over 50.

My London friends are under 50, but have had theirs.

My cousins, other siblings and other friends are in their 40s and have had theirs.

I'm 49. Asthmatic but controlled. Key worker out at work every day throughout every lockdown, including visiting vulnerable but not NHS or Carer so don't count (I can and do social distance).

Keep telling myself I'm lucky to be too young, too fit, no caring responsibilities, in a job where I can social distance (in fact, in a job at all right now!) but everyone around me talks about their jabs, reactions, and now about their second jabs! Pure jealousy!

Completely understand OP. It's not bad to want extra safety and peace of mind for yourself.

I'm 29 and had mine back in Feb. I can't even explain the relief I felt when I sat in that chair.

As it stands I'm absolutely still a complete anxious wreck about covid but I do have very severe health anxiety.

Hoping the Moderna batch arrives for us soon. I’m 47 in a few months with DC in two different schools, and my mum was recently diagnosed with cancer so I’m driving her to appointments and doing things for her. She’s had her first jab but I’d still like to know I’m not likely to put her at risk when she starts chemo Confused

dcb2 · 28/03/2021 09:29

I felt exactly the same as an over 40. There was talk of our group having vaccinations by Easter, then it moved to not likely before May.

If it's any use, a couple of our local pharmacies operate a reserve list for left over vaccines at the end of the day, provided you can get there quickly. Some are limiting the reserve list to healthcare workers (which is understandable), but others are including over 45s. My husband (46) received his vaccination this way on Friday, they called a few people on the reserve list as they had surplus vaccines.

To be honest no need for vaccine envy we are all under the same restrictions.
I’ve had it but I’m in isolation because dc tested positive. So I’m no better then non vaccine people except I’m less likely to get ill . They don’t know if I can catch it or pass on .
Or it’s a lie and they don’t want the vaccinated to mix with the non vaccinated.
Even a expert said this week no reason why the vaccinated can’t mix with vaccinated.

Duckyneedsaclean · 28/03/2021 09:38

@LacyEdge if you contact your GP and explain about your mum they should be able to code you as a carer and offer you the vaccine. Good luck!

TheOneWithTheBigNose · 28/03/2021 09:41

I would say the main reason is that the low risk (non vaccinated) have stayed at home all year to protect those at higher risk, and I can’t see there being much enthusiasm for them continuing to stay at home while waiting for their vaccine, while the vaccinated can mix freely.
It wouldn’t make for a very harmonious society!

Not for long, though. As more places open from April, the infection rates are very likely to go up. So those of us waiting are then at more risk of catching covid just from going to the shops, work, from kids, public transport etc. When pubs and restaurants open, those who've been vaccinated can at least feel safer going there. Friends who've been vaccinated recently will have their second dose before all restrictions are meant to be lifted in June but I now know I won't.

Avidreader12 · 28/03/2021 09:56

I could be wrong but I saw on other threads you can book on nhs COVID booking website as a carer without carer code.

HUCKMUCK · 28/03/2021 10:02

It’s a bloody nightmare for those of us booking jabs. We are getting clear consistent messages that we MUST NOT book outside of cohorts 1-9 but also that we MUST NOT let any vaccine get wasted. Many places are now struggling to get the remaining 1-9 patients in and that’s why some areas are vaccinating under 50s but it’s not technically approved by the JCVI.

The sooner they open up cohorts 10 and onwards the better.

LacyEdge · 28/03/2021 10:03

Oh thank you @Duckyneedsaclean - I’ll try that.

JessicaH1 · 28/03/2021 10:07

Im pregnant so I cant have the vaccine anyway, but for some reason im being offered the vaccine, doctors ringing me , NHS ringing me , text messages all the time .. despite me being in my 20s , no underlying health conditions , not a key worker , i dont live with any body vulnerable. So confused

Yes but you missed my point we all still have the same rules vaccinated or not if you are in contact with someone you still isolate. The same laws apply everything. Yes you can catch Covid but you are less at risk hence why you haven’t had the vaccine hence why everyone is released from lockdown at the same time . What are people actually envious of that they may get ill ? Nobody is forcing anyone to mix if you are worried stay home but good god 12 months on vaccinated or not let’s get back to some normality. You’ll get you vaccine eventually and less of the envy .

The issue is this just speeds it up for those happy to lie

And slows it down for others

I hope it’s not the case

I don’t really agree with that.

I got my first dose of the vaccine last week, and while i am still subject to the same restrictions as the non vaccinated, it’s made a massive psychological difference (for the better) to know that I’ll now be less likely to catch Covid, and less likely to have a severe case if I do catch it.
Especially given that restrictions are likely to ease soon, and that’s likely to lead to an increase of Covid cases in the community as people mix more.

No! My sil is a teacher. Bubbles popping everywhere at her school. Both her dc isolating. One of them in a school with a huge number of cases. Her severely asthmatic 49 year old Dh isn’t considered cv so hadn’t had a jab. It seriously pisses me off when 30 year olds are getting it.

islockdownoveryet · 28/03/2021 13:10

What 30 year olds ? 30 year olds who are parent carers or have a condition. oh yeah be really pissed off with a parent of a disabled child because no healthy 30 year old has got the vaccine unless they work in the professional front line and rightly so . Or have been called up or and I know of a few of these that have managed to get a vaccine by getting a leftover one at the centre which saves them going to waste so anyone can do that .
It really is petty and those who think like that should be embarrassed.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 28/03/2021 13:12

No of course not 30 year old like that! But some places have done all the normal 40’s and are onto normal 30’s,

GoneCrazy · 28/03/2021 13:19

They are doing that here too not just Ireland - concentrating on the older - vulnerable etc but they’ve all been done hence working through the groups. I read today at the UK will send vaccine to Ireland so that’s good news for Ireland - prob piss the EU off but if they have to send vaccine anywhere at least if it goes to Ireland that will protect Northern Ireland

plinkplinkfizzer · 28/03/2021 15:52

I do agree with the psychological affect of getting the call up . Knowing you haven't missed your place and the relief you feel when you sit in the chair . You are here they have finally got round to you .💉😁
Then the count down to the 2nd dose .. It's so exciting .

Oh and yes drink lots of water before and after vaccine helps ward off side affects , in my experience .
BunsyGirl · 28/03/2021 16:16

I am starting to get annoyed now at the number of healthy under 50’s receiving the vaccine when there are many asthmatics like me who are on the flu vaccination list but have still not received the vaccine. We are at the mercy of our GPS who arbitrarily decide whether our asthma is severe enough or not. I have been hospitalised in the past but still no vaccination!

Stillgoings · 28/03/2021 16:42

@LacyEdge you can put yourself down as an unpaid carer on the NHS vaccination booker website and book your appointment today. There is no question in your circumstances that you need it.

DarceyDashwood · 28/03/2021 16:59

This is an interesting piece on the Guardian today www.theguardian.com/world/2021/mar/28/key-uk-workers-given-secret-covid-jabs-to-avoid-wasting-vaccine

I find how very odd how the “official” line is clinics/GPs can’t start vaccinating Group 10 (under 50s) when everyone knows lots are! My healthy DH got his text invite on Thursday from his GP and he is 43!

namesnamesnamesnames · 28/03/2021 17:01

They are on to those aged 40 and above where I live. Hopefully most will be offered it before long.

TooManyPlatesInMotion · 28/03/2021 17:01

Me too. 41 and in London. Many of my local friends (40s or late 30s) have had their first dose. I am jealous as hell.
