Absolutely shocking conditions in a council housing block Practically raining indoors. One woman had to unplug her fridge due to the danger. All in this together but only when its Covid and face masks. You can forget about any other equality the rest of the time.

That’s appalling.

MercyBooth · 22/03/2021 17:54

YY @GoldenOmber And i thought we were supposed to be protecting the NHS Those conditions will cause illnesses or even (God forbid) a fire.

Hollyhead · 22/03/2021 17:59

That is absolutely outrageous, is there anything we can do? Has anyone set up Crowdfunding?

pinkearedcow · 22/03/2021 18:24

Oh my god. Thank you for posting this, I am going to share it as much as possible, the council need to be forced into sorting this.

InglouriousBasterd · 22/03/2021 18:31

God that’s appalling.

cryh · 22/03/2021 19:29

That made me cry, imagine trying to stay calm and care for your children in that. I think I would struggle to remain so reasonable.

MercyBooth · 22/03/2021 19:47

2016 Tories vote down law requiring landlords make their homes fit for human habitation.
2020/21 Tories.............STAY HOME protect the NHS save lives.

Oh god that's really upsetting. Nobody should have to live like that.

Katie517 · 22/03/2021 21:31

This is a prime example of why we are not all in it together as some lockdown lovers enjoy saying. You might want lockdown to continue indefinitely while you sit in your 4 bed detached house with furlough or a comfortable salary and a nice garden to spend time in, meanwhile for some people home is the worst place for them to be!

Do you realise what all those councils have in common ?
They're all Labour controlled.

Mygardenisnotperfect · 01/04/2021 01:57

It is appalling. But I’m honestly slightly shocked that people are shocked. As a GP I have had endless dealings with people about leaks, mould, unsafe electrics, lack of hot water etc. in their council flats over the years, especially when I worked in London. Social housing in the UK is generally a very poor standard. And overcrowding is a huge issue too. Even when I get involved and write to the council as children are struggling with their breathing as a result etc nothing seems to get done. They gaslight the tenants and say either that there is no problem or that it’s all their own fault for hanging clothes to dry indoors etc. And refuse to fix it. Nobody would put up with this if they owned and lived in the place. I’ve occasionally tried to get environmental health involved eg for one man who had condemned electrics and no running water (!) and that has occasionally resulted in some action. I have to say this is a particularly severe and shocking case but it’s a very common issue.

MercyBooth · 01/04/2021 02:34

YY @Mygardenisnotperfect i used to post about it a lot under a previous user name.

Not excusing it but whoever runs them, those councils are all in areas of high poverty with harsh grant cuts.

Housing costs money.

UmbilicusProfundus · 01/04/2021 12:38

@Myalternate

Such a naively simplistic comment. Quite likely there is some mismanagement and incompetence, as for all colours of local government. Less affluent and/or urban areas, where these problems are more common, are more likely to vote Labour. The direction of causality is probably in the other direction to what you suggest. And it is the central conservative government that has a major influence on local government budgets
lolaflores · 01/04/2021 12:42

Austerity? Now, who's big idea was that? Labours?
And how long since local governments have con trol over their budgets?
Housing associations have a reputation for being appaling landlords.

Tealightsandd · 01/04/2021 13:39

This is the consequence of the "investment" and focus on London. Overcrowded slum housing. If you think the social housing is bad, you should see the state of the private sector including the beds in sheds. Those tenants can't even complain because section 21 no fault evictions mean they'll be homeless if they do. lola is right. It's all governments for the last 30 years but it started with Labour. Tony Blair was obsessed with making London a playground for the rich, consequences for it's working poor and disabled be damned.

Roonerspismed · 01/04/2021 13:43

I was disgusted by this. Where the hell did we go wrong?

lolaflores · 01/04/2021 18:30

London is as you rightly say, a place where properties sit vacant, worth stupid amounts of money and in the same building "poor doors " social housing begrudgingly provided by developers who then treat those tenants like shit.

Fucking Dickensian conditions for the rear of this blighted city.

It's all fucked up. I look forward to the day, should it come, when housing people is more important than attracting oligarchs of any stripe to wash their money through a flat in Mayfair or Chelsea.

MercyBooth · 07/04/2021 19:36

Its got worse.

OP posts:
beginningoftheend · 07/04/2021 20:22

It isn't just the conditions of the flat that make this so horrid, but also the lack of reasonable courtesy towards the tenants Angry

MercyBooth · 07/04/2021 20:45

Exactly.

It’s just appalling how these poor people are treated - this is UK in 2021 - it’s deplorable. It’s still freezing cold here and to be living in soaking wet conditions like this, the mould, the electrocution risk - it’s unbelievable.
But having had a few dealings with our local council and how impossible it is to get anything actioned and how much they line their own pockets - I’m sadly not surprised. Where we are you can’t even get a result writing to your MP. She’s in a safe Tory seat and just ignores you - doesn’t even bother to respond half the time.

I don’t know what can be done because I thought Grenfell might wake people up, but there must be a thousand similar tragedies waiting to happen across the country. I honestly don’t know what it will take to treat people with some humanity.

Peachee · 07/04/2021 21:18

Diabolical

beginningoftheend · 08/04/2021 06:50

I honestly don’t know what it will take to treat people with some humanity I worry about this too, but try to retain hope as nations have gone through very dark times then learnt from it. UK in a bad spot currently but I live in hope.
