No holidays abroad will affect poorer people more

I haven't been on holiday abroad or in the Uk since 2008, this year we were finally due to go to away to Greece with my 2 young children. Now cost of passports is a barrier for the poorer family like us, but I can't see I can afford a Uk holiday now Sad I just feel sad, another year we won't go anywhere. We've paid so it will have to be moved, they won't refund.

Has Boris said when Zoos and farms will open ? I've no idea what we will do. We live a long way from the beach petrol wise.

Och OP, that’s a shame. Sadly absolutely everything about this pandemic has affected the poor more. It’s crap.

We love Cornwall so are happy to go there, it’s costing £1000 plus for a caravan in the first week of July so not cheap x

Wakeupin2022 · 22/03/2021 23:21

Have you looked at premier inns / travelodges? You could probably get a few days relatively cheap. We use them a lot.

Also if you are not in Scotland, have you considered it late August. Scottish schools are back so it may be cheaper.

You could probably pick up a cheap caravan somewhere.

Another option is Tesco vouchers if you have them. I don't find it the cheapest but they can be used to pay for holidays.

They are more expensive this year definitely. We have paid out a fair bit for our week.

Hopra · 22/03/2021 23:38

I’m just going to recreate an all inclusive at home. Paddling pool up, buy in a shit load of vodka and mixers, fried breakfast or Danish pastries everyday and a different takeaway every night. Job done.

On a serious note, the place we stayed in last year in the UK for £1200 is £3200 for the same week this year!

earsup · 22/03/2021 23:42

Its a rip off...campsite in cornwall is usually £22 a night...now booked up and some slots at £79 a night...refuse to pay it....

RainingZen · 23/03/2021 02:28

We've decided not to book a UK holiday as I am too stingy to pay over the odds!

We are going to do day trips and overnight stays, admittedly we have budget for petrol and we are within reach of some interesting places. DD will also go and stay with her grandparents for a little while.

ItWasTheBestOfTimes · 23/03/2021 06:25

We've booked recently to do 5 nights in South Wales during school holidays and thought it was reasonable at just under £400 for B and B at premier inn. We never cook on holiday even if in SC accommodation so it works out a lot cheaper to just book rooms to use as a base for day trips in the area.

roundtable · 23/03/2021 06:36

I refuse to pay the current prices on the UK. It's far too expensive for inconsistent weather. Day trips when the weather is nice I think.

Friends of ours have just had their UK holiday cancelled by the accomodation they were staying at due to unforeseen circumstances only to see it readvertised again for much much more money for the same week.

It's nothing to do with being stingy, it's just terrible value for money. I wouldn't pay some of the prices quoted even though I can afford it - we normally have 3 or 4 short-haul diving or other sporting holidays each year that we obviously didn't do last year, but there's no way I'd spend a good chunk of the five figure sum in our holiday account on a week in the UK.

We'll probably stay at home, just enjoy the time off, have some day trips out and be on holiday at home.

May17th · 23/03/2021 06:48

Holiday passports were the same price as last year were they not OP? How were you going to Greece?

There’s a lot of people saying we cannot afford a holiday as though someone is rich to be going on holiday. I think it’s offensive! I’ve had a holiday (now cancelled) booked from 2019! You can pay each month until it’s paid off OP.

Maybe you have things others don’t choose to spend on!

omygoditsearly · 23/03/2021 06:48

We have 7 passports for 4 of us, three of which require multiple embassy visits each! It costs a good portion of a holiday!

Mayvis · 23/03/2021 06:49

Have a look on pitch up. If you don’t have a tent or campervan, you can click to search for places with bells tents, yurts etc. We have booked a campsite with a bell tent plus beds and wood burning stove for £50 a night. Up near Skegness in the summer holidays. It would have been cheaper to take our own tent but I thought the price was reasonable and it’ll be comfier and warmer.

Mintyt · 23/03/2021 06:53

I haven't read but didn't want to run, I do the Sun newspaper £9.00 holidays- and they have always worked for us

The Premier inns I’ve searched look very cheap for August! I’m thinking of going on city breaks this year!

We’ve not been on holiday abroad for many years.
I think it’s ridiculous to say that you are ‘poor’ if you can’t afford holidays abroad.
I don’t have a spare 3- 4K for my family each year but we are certainly not poor.

CovidCorvid · 23/03/2021 07:02

@Dongdingdong

I agree. The cost of UK holidays will be £stupid this year

Fortunately we booked a UK holiday in 2019 for last year, which was then rolled over to this year when it became clear it couldn’t happen. So we’re still paying last year’s prices and I expect a lot of people will be the same.

Holidays will be expensive for those booking now, but all these people holidaying in the UK will give a much needed boost to our tourism industry and economy in general, which can only be a good thing.

There’s a lot of holiday cottages/static sites who have realised this and cancelled previously made bookings. Issued a refund. So they can get new bookings at a better price.
Hollyhocksarenotmessy · 23/03/2021 07:09

I'm hoping to do a house swap with a friend.

3asAbird · 23/03/2021 07:11

Well we were meant to go west Wales 4nights last year self catered lodge think we may have paid 489 for 6of us.
Eldest senior school has 8 week holiday so meant taking 2 primary age kids out during term time.
Then covid happened.
Wales dident open up until late so June we gave up and cancelled and moved it to Devon for over 4nights early July.
We went again 4nights but this year we have a dog extra £100.
This lodge also has hot tub as unsure with covid if main facilities like pool be allowed to open.
We will mostly self cater.
We hoping pubs and restaurants be open
Also local theme park ..
We paid over 1000 for the same week.

I'm hopeful it may go ahead.
I would not book abroad until 2023.
But pretty sure kids passport expires and youngest doesn't have one so that's another £200.
Eldest has gone on 2 ski trips with school abroad she only just made it back from Italy in time last year.

AuntieStella · 23/03/2021 07:12

@FourTeaFallOut

Everything has a greater effect on those who are poor. Money is insulation. Zoos and theme parks, etc are open on April 12th, with all the usual caveats around the relaxations.
This is so true.

And I think we're all going to have to get into the mindset of how to have fun when all you have is your second choice of campsite, a tent that smells a bit sinister, and lashings of ginger beer.

awesomekillick · 23/03/2021 07:12

I have absolutely no desire to holiday in the UK along with the millions of others all doing the same. Millions who in better times are spread throughout Europe's beaches will be congregating in British seaside towns and holiday destinations which were built to manage a third of those numbers. Fuck that.

Whenthesunshines · 23/03/2021 07:14

awesomekillick

I agree that U.K. tourist hot spots are going to be overcrowded this year!
The roads to Cornwall... omg!!

minniemoocher · 23/03/2021 07:17

It's cheaper to holiday in the U.K. than Greece - if you can't go (nobody knows yet) take a refund and go camping in the U.K.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 23/03/2021 07:20

The cost of UK holidays this year are just going to be ridiculous; I told my experience on another thread a while ago and still astounded at the cheek of it

  • DH rang for a quote one evening for 4 double bedrooms in a hotel in the midlands, the next morning he rang to book them and the price had gone up by nearly £500!! They wouldn’t honour the telephone quote of the night before. Outrageous.
Nellodee · 23/03/2021 07:26

You can book a caravan at the seaside for 6 people for a week for £530 in peak season if you shop around.

fluffythedragonslayer · 23/03/2021 07:31

I take the kids for a few nights in a premier inn. Somewhere we can get to on the train. Prem Inn is usually around £40 a night. They are generally located within easy distance of take aways etc and things to do. We've had some brilliant holidays over the years really cheap. I've never been able to afford to go abroad so we never have.
AirBnB etc can work out v costly in UK but there are several budget hotel chains you can base yourselves at very cheaply.
The holiday abroad ban doesn't effect me but I do feel for those people whom it does effect. But I never quite understand when people say they can't afford to holiday in the UK.

pumpkinpie01 · 23/03/2021 07:31

@minniemoocher it isn't always cheaper if you factor in food, day trips out , indoor places if it rains , petrol etc compared to an all inclusive . I priced it up the other day AI £350 each ( there would be 3 of us ) plus £300 spending money max compared to haven/cottage at £1200 plus god knows how much spending money probably at least £500 for a week but that wouldn't go very far .
