DM really unwell after vaccine, when to worry?

Beebityboo · 18/03/2021 12:11

59yo DM had the AZ vaccine yesterday and has just called sounding in really rough shape. Can't stop sweating and has thrown up several times this morning/has a high temp. She isn't in the best health and doesn't live close by so I'm feeling a bit helpless.
Are these side effects normal? It seems quite extreme?

My ex had a temperature of 39 for a few hours. He went off his food (v unusual) for a day but was fine after 72 hours.

I'd stay in regular contact and tell her to call 111 if no better by Friday afternoon.

Hope she feels better soon.

Viviennemary · 18/03/2021 12:17

I've heard people feeling rough for two or three days. So a day or two is usually nothing to worry about.

alreadytaken · 18/03/2021 12:17

Side effects, if any, usually go after a day or so. Unfortunate that it's near the weekend, if not better by Monday she definitely needs medical advice then.

Duckyneedsaclean · 18/03/2021 12:20

Has she taken paracetamol? She should if not. Anything which can relieve symptoms.

Sounds like she's having worse side effects than most, but within normal range. She will likely find she suddenly feels better later today or by tomorrow. Keep in contact, but I wouldn't worry yet.

Pedestriancrossing · 18/03/2021 12:26

I am 53 and had the AZ vaccine on Tuesday lunchtime. By the evening I was vomitting and feverish and spent yesterday in bed feeling terrible. Today seem a bit better thankfully. I have been drinking loads of fluids and taking paracetamol every few hrs. and just slept alot. If your Mum is still b
ad after 3 or 4 days I would seek medical advice.

middleager · 18/03/2021 12:27

This happened to my mom and my two aunts in their 70s. They were really unwell with it.

It lasted a day or so but then they were fine.

Callywalls · 18/03/2021 12:28

I'm 53 and had the az on Tuesday at 11.30am. I felt fine all that day then that evening got upset stomach, chills, off food, fever and a really painful armpit in the arm where I'd had the shot. I felt off all day yesterday but I've woken up this morning and feel much better, still don't feel A1 but it's definitely wearing off me. Hope your dm feels better soon.

bechr · 18/03/2021 12:29

I think it’s the immune system that causes it. It’s fairly common so hopefully will get better in the next day or two

PinkPlantCase · 18/03/2021 12:31

Does she live alone OP?

Agree that the side effects are within the normal range but if my DM was unusually ill I’d want someone to be with her incase she suddenly got very ill and couldn’t call for help herself. Especially if she is the kind to soldier on without wanting to bother anyone.

I’d probably get a lateral flow test, make arrangements with work and then stay with her atleast overnight.

FlyingBurrito · 18/03/2021 12:34

Sounds exactly like someone I know, couple of days of feeling really rough then back to normal. Those sound like the side effects that everyone who gets them has, which would are you concerned about being extreme?

HippoNamedBooBooButt · 18/03/2021 12:36

I'm 42 and had the AZ at 11 am on Tuesday. By the evening I was freezing cold and not hungry, and aching joints and limbs. Overnight I had a temperature of nearly 40 and got no sleep as I was ice cold inside, but my skin was red hot and sweating. In the morning I felt spaced out and sick. By lunchtime (so just over 24 hours after having it) I felt much better, ate lots and was just a bit tired. By the evening on Wednesday I was starving and had a glass of wine. This morning I have woken up and feel about 95% of my normal self.

It sounds like she's having some fairly bad side effects but still within normal range. Overnight on Tuesday I was really worried about how bad I felt but it literally passed fairly quickly and now I can't believe I feel so well again, or that I felt so ill such a short amount of time ago.

Keep checking on her and call Dr if you need to, or 111 over the weekend, but I bet she's passed through the worst of it before the weekend.

Hope she's OK.

Mrsjayy · 18/03/2021 12:39

I had mine on a Saturday and felt better by the Tuesday I did feel rough but t your mum will be fine rest and paracetamol . Nothing about her symptoms sound extreme really.

Mrsjayy · 18/03/2021 12:41

Ah I saw she has been sick sorry that is worrying but I think that can be a symptom I was felt sick but didn't vomit.

Being sick is one of the "common" symptoms according to the AZ side effects info sheet
isitjustlockdown · 18/03/2021 12:44

I had my first dose yesterday morning. I started a headache/feeling sick in the evening and was up most of night with that and chills/sweating. Paracetamol have helped take the edge off ( I have needed to call in sick to work though which is not like me).

In the last hour or so the headache has eased up, and I don't feel so sick.

I don't generally react to vaccines, but I think it's a bit common with this one compared to say the flu jab.

Hopefully it will pass soon for your mum too.

Mrsjayy · 18/03/2021 12:55

symptoms according to the AZ side effects info sheet

Yes it is I meant to say that must be worrying for the op not that it was a worry.

saraclara · 18/03/2021 13:04

It's a horrible feeling if you get the worst of the reactions, OP. Mine started at 10pm, and I felt really rough overnight. I finally got out of bed at midday, but just graduated to under a blanket on the sofa. But by evening I was loads better. So pretty much exactly 24 hours of bleh.

I've been widowed for ten years, and to be honest, it was the first time that I really wished I didn't live alone. I've never had a reaction like that to a vaccine, and it was quite scary. I hadn't heard of it happening to other back then, whereas now you hear a lot about it.

So yes, don't worry. Just empathise and reassure her that it will be short lived. If she still feels terrible tomorrow, then if she needs reassurance she could call 111.

VeryScary · 18/03/2021 13:04

Had mine yesterday and am feeling very rough today. The worst headache I’ve ever had, shivers, muscle pain all over, nausea. Still so glad I’ve had it though. Just waiting for this to pass.

saraclara · 18/03/2021 13:06

...and yes, it's all on the sheet, and the guy who gave me the vaccination mentioned the possible side-effects. But they're basically the same ones that you're warned about with the flu vaccine, which has never affected me. So I didn't really take much notice! When I started to worry about the bone-deep chills, I read the leaflet, and realised it was okay, and started being glad my body was responding.

Purplemarshmallows · 18/03/2021 13:08

My step dad who's 70 & has cancer had the exact same when he had his, only lasted 24 hours.

ekidmxcl · 18/03/2021 13:10

I was ill for 24 hours. Temperature etc I literally couldn’t get out of bed. Fine after that.

XiCi · 18/03/2021 13:10

The side effects just sound terrible. I tested positive for covid 10 days ago. The symptoms were nowhere near as bad as the side effects being reported here. Not even close, and didnt even last as long

wasthataburp · 18/03/2021 13:15

Hope she feels better soon! But you should really report these things, since the vaccine is still undergoing "trials" until 2023 these things should be reported.

tobee · 18/03/2021 13:21

Yes but 2.6 million have died from Covid, countless others have been hospitalised, very unwell etc. How many have died as a proven, direct result of having any of the vaccines.

I think you only have to report side effects that aren't already included in the leaflet as common ones, maybe a doctor could confirm,
