DM really unwell after vaccine, when to worry?

Beebityboo · 18/03/2021 12:11

59yo DM had the AZ vaccine yesterday and has just called sounding in really rough shape. Can't stop sweating and has thrown up several times this morning/has a high temp. She isn't in the best health and doesn't live close by so I'm feeling a bit helpless.
Are these side effects normal? It seems quite extreme?

She sounds ill but not worryingly so

Tell her to take paracetamol, plenty of fluids and rest.

Choccyp1g · 18/03/2021 13:25

I'm 63 and felt feverish within a few hours of the AZ jab. One bad night, like moderate flu, followed by a few days feeling vaguely ill. Hardly ate anything for 3 days, but probably would have been sick if I forced myself to eat.

You might find it reassuring OP to hear about other people, even on the BBC, having experienced similar:

I was floored for three days with side-effects after having my first Covid jab and many of you have been in touch about your side-effects too. Why do some of us feel awful after the vaccine, while others barely notice anything? What does this say about our immune systems and how protected we will be against covid? We put your questions to Eleanor Riley, a professor of immunology and infectious disease at Edinburgh University.

You or she can report the side effects, if you want. The vaccine rollout is not a trial, but the regulators monitor side effects of all medicines.

There is a special page for coronavirus reports coronavirus-yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk

My parents had their vaccinations at the same time. My dad was fine, DM was very ill for 24hrs. I've had mine this morning, just waiting and keeping my fingers crossed!

pinkearedcow · 18/03/2021 15:09

Try not to worry@Beebityboo - I am a similar age to your DM and had a fever etc after the AZ vaccine (Monday) and felt a bit rough. It's taken me a couple of days to recover and it's only today I feel totally back to normal (felt OK yesterday but very tired) . If you look up the known side effects. everything your DM has is common or even very common.

TheHobbitMum · 18/03/2021 15:27

I'm sorry to hear about your Mum, after I had the AZ I was ill for a week. I don't think I've ever felt so bad! I felt like I'd been hit by a bus and had most of the side effects over the space of a week. I spent the week mostly in bed and by day 8 I could start feeling better.

Hopefully she's feeling a lot better tomorrow

Tanfastic · 18/03/2021 15:29

Sounds normal to me, I was like this minus the actual vomiting but I did feel sick. I honestly wouldn't worry.

Mrsjayy · 18/03/2021 16:44

My mum was iffy my dad was right as rain and my sister was also ok after AZ it must affect people differently.

maddy68 · 18/03/2021 16:47

I was really poorly about 24 hrs after the AZ. Shivering then very hot headache., Nausea. Lasted a couple of days. Then for about a week after I just had the headache and tiredness. Three weeks later I still feel a bit "off" but nothing terrible

Janedownourlane · 18/03/2021 17:05

A friends husband, mid 60s, had the AZ vaccine on a Monday and stiil had flu like symptoms on the Friday. They have recorded it on the yellow card system and spoken to their GP. Apparently this is not completely unusual, just bad luck? Its possible he had Covid way back early on in the pandemic but they werent testing then.
Hope your DM is feeling on the mend now.

Authenticchicken · 18/03/2021 17:11

My DM had the vaccine on a Friday afternoon and on Monday had to ring the GP for advice as she felt so terrible. She'd recovered by about the Wednesday. So it can go on. It wasn't covid because she had had it a month before. But it may be that her immune system was therefore 'good', as the GP indicated.

I'm 59 OP and had my jab yesterday evening. About 6 hours later I got the chills and couldn't stop shaking which is all the more strange because I suffer from really bad menopausal hot flushes and never feel cold. I had to wake my OH at 1.30am to go downstairs and make me 2 hot water bottles!
Then I developed really bad stomach pains and nausea and was sick a couple of times. Dozed for a couple of hours and woke up with a really bad sinus headache. Couldn't take paracetemol because I was throwing up.
I've had a hot bath and been back to bed for a few hours. Haven't been able to eat anything so far today but the chills have stopped and the headache is easing off. Still feel a bit sick but hopefully will be ok tomorrow.
Have to admit it did take me a bit by surprise

Mrsjayy · 18/03/2021 17:20

I read somewhere about maybe people had covid and this is why they get side effects,

99victoria · 18/03/2021 17:33

Yes, I read that too. I think I may have had it last March but obviously no way of knowing as there were no tests then. I had extreme fatigue and chest tightness, diarrohea and lost my sense of taste. At the time stomach upset and loss of taste weren't even flagged as symptoms

StarsonaString · 18/03/2021 17:49

I had mine in the morning then chills and mild fever in the evening. Knackered and slept 10hrs that night. Next day I was very tired, muzzy and joints ached a bit but I was well enough to work. Next day fine.

How is she now - fully recovered?
