Outbreaks in schools

Trustisamust · 18/03/2021 04:15

Since schools have returned there have already been major outbreaks in both my child's secondary and the primary I work at.
The majority of school staff remain unvaccinated.
For how many other schools is this already the case?
I just don't know what to think any more.

From The Telegraph:

Children's return to school hasn't led to rise in infections, figures show

Children returning to school has not led to a rise in Covid infections, as the first data shows just 0.05 per cent of secondary students tested positive.

Of the 2,762,775 lateral flow tests that were carried out on secondary pupils, just 1,324 were positive, according to the first official figures.

Prof Jon Deeks, an expert in biostatistics at Birmingham University, has found that the number of positive cases among pupils are far lower than ministers expected.

That is very low, good to hear
ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 19/03/2021 14:33

Well what else would you expect from The Telegraph?!

StanfordPines · 19/03/2021 14:40

In my school we didn’t have a single case between Christmas and 8th March.

Since coming back we have had 9 staff and 18 children test positive.
The school is now closed it isn’t safe to open due to the numbers of staff isolating.

It has bugger all to do with the numbers testing, everyone who tested had been ill.

StanfordPines · 19/03/2021 14:40

Oh, and it’s not even made the local paper.

MarshaBradyo · 19/03/2021 14:41

Is there a different number somewhere?

Maybe The Guardian has it

Yes this is what I referred to in the link above - these results are so wacky they seem unbelievable. Either rates in kids are low low low or the tests are very inaccurate.

Needs investigation.

ChameleonClara · 19/03/2021 14:55
I read this about the tests generally, sounds a bit weird. I just find it hard to trust these tests, however much I would like to mobile.twitter.com/deeksj/status/1372506978661109760
Reposting the link about the improbable test results.

Needs to be investigated.

Not really good to hear or accurate reporting from the telegraph. John Deeks is actually saying that the LF tests are so inaccurate that they are only picking up a very small proportion of the cases.

There probably are some false negatives but I'm not sure why it's hard to believe that rates in kids are low if the majority of them have been at home for 2 months?

lonelyplanet · 19/03/2021 14:58

Sorry ChameleonClara, posting at the same time.

The number of positive tests will be the same, whichever paper is reporting them. They’re not subjective.
middleager · 19/03/2021 14:58

One of mine only went back last Friday and many other secondaries went back later too, so this feels too premature to call.

MarshaBradyo · 19/03/2021 14:58

Cases are still falling in England aren't they?

Announced today

Got to go out so will look at Twitter in a mo

MrsHerculePoirot · 19/03/2021 14:59

We have three confirmed cases so far at my school. If you asked parents though they all think there has been none as why would they know if their child wasn’t affected?

Because they will probably have the same rates as the rest of the community. Other family members won't have been at home the whole time.

As many have already pointed out on the thread, some schools (including ours) tell parents about all cases, not just those affecting their children.
JustJustWhy · 19/03/2021 15:05

I can't speak for false negatives but I can absolutely guarantee that our large secondary school has now tested all students who we were able to (only a very small number did not consent) twice over. 2 positives on day one. All the rest were negative.

YouWereGr8InLittleMenstruators · 19/03/2021 15:56

We managed one week, now 3 year groups isolating and 4 staff sick in my primary.
Teaching my isolated class remotely, it is clear they are not isolating effectively; chat about attending extra-curricular activities, going for bikerides, visiting relatives and parents bringing them to school to pick up siblings makes me wonder what the hell we can do.
I tested positive this morning after I developed symptoms last night. Gutted.

IpanemaNova · 19/03/2021 16:01

We have 3 positives now in the same year group (secondary). Our school sends out an email each time.

Cases nationally are going down though Confused

SpnBaby1967 · 19/03/2021 16:14

No cases here in either of our huge primary and secondary (combined student total of around 3700 students - 2 secondary campus and a large primary) that's with the LFT testing.

OP, how are you quantifying a "major" outbreak. Is it 3 cases, 8 cases, 50 cases?

phlebasconsidered · 19/03/2021 16:18

3 cases in my year group. Cases locally are rising, 200% yesterday. Rolling rate of 240. It did get down to unmeasurable.

And today I waved my class off for the weekend and all the fun things they have planned, including a birthday party and a big bbq.

TheOneWithTheBigNose · 19/03/2021 16:31

Bit cold for a BBQ.

phlebasconsidered · 19/03/2021 16:35

Not here it isn't. Predicted to be 18 degrees over the weekend.

This is patent nonsense

Schools only went back last monday - it will be at least another 2-3 weeks before there's any reliable data to show the impact on infection rates.

School tests in the first week only reflect the community levels of virus since it's highly unlikely any student could have picked the virus up at school and then tested +ve in the same week.
