Outbreaks in schools

Trustisamust · 18/03/2021 04:15

Since schools have returned there have already been major outbreaks in both my child's secondary and the primary I work at.
The majority of school staff remain unvaccinated.
For how many other schools is this already the case?
I just don't know what to think any more.

None in ours. Most students consented to the test. 2 Year 12s were positive on the first day and sent home. Large secondary school.

Theredjellybean · 18/03/2021 05:18

What do you mean by "large outbreaks"
In public health terms that would mean the majority of pupils and staff
Has the school been closed?
Because I certainly haven't seen anything on the news, and I would have thought a large outbreak closing schools would have been reported

Trustisamust · 18/03/2021 05:27

@Theredjellybean All I know is two large year groups have been affected in one school (positive cases) and one large year groups in another. I don't obviously know exactly how many people have tested positive.
My youngest child's HT (early 40s) had it before Christmas and is still not 100%.
I still think it's shocking school staff remain unvaccinated.

None. Since the full reopening in September there have only been 2 (known) cases of Covid, with only 2 classes havinh to isolate. Primary school in Derbyshire and we have some of the higher rates in the country at the moment.

Trustisamust · 18/03/2021 05:30

As someone said on another thread, these LFD tests are like "taking a pregnancy test when you're already pregnant!"

OP posts:
Itsalonghaul · 18/03/2021 05:46

Not a single case. School of nearly a 1000 teens. Every child tested now three times. Every member of staff ditto.
I find the testing procedure extremely comforting and it has given me confidence to send my child in safely and without worry.

Trustisamust · 18/03/2021 05:49

@Itsalonghaul But from what I understand, if an LFD test comes back positive then that individual already has Covid? So the spread may well have already started?

We just got a message that one of the staff in the high school (1200 pupils) has covid.

This makes me think that it's the first time since September (or March 2020?) that any staff at the school has had covid.

Never had a message about any kids at the school having covid. Dunno if school would tell us.

Trustisamust · 18/03/2021 05:50

Also, I am aware that some parents haven't consented to their child being tested? My son still says they are allowed to attend school but I don't know if that's true?

OP posts:
Trustisamust · 18/03/2021 05:52

@yeOldeTrout They only probably know they're positive as testing only recently. Before testing chances are they were cases but not confirmed.

When else are you expecting it to come back positive? And I’ve only ever taken a pregnancy test when I’m already pregnant.

HereComesATractor · 18/03/2021 05:59

No outbreaks in my area anyway. My husband is a teacher and there have been no positives at his school so far. I do think it’s only a matter of time before we have to isolate due to contact with a positive case, but that’s just par for the course really

GreenBalaclava · 18/03/2021 05:59

Not a single case at either of my DC's schools.

HereComesATractor · 18/03/2021 06:00

(So far this year - there were a couple of positives in the autumn but they were lucky that it didn’t affect much of the school)

OliveTree75 · 18/03/2021 06:01

How do you know its a 'major outbreak' when you don't know how many have tested positive?

Kitkatchunkyplease · 18/03/2021 06:02

Two year groups out already (large secondary)

hiredandsqueak · 18/03/2021 06:04

No cases in my dd's school either and they have been open as usual with testing through this lockdown. Also in an area where cases are currently higher than average.

Hazelnutlatteplease · 18/03/2021 06:07

All negative first day back. Two year 10s now positive with significant number of DD's friends having to isolate. DD former school. (DD is now home ed full time)

Isitbedtimeyet10 · 18/03/2021 06:09

DD primary nothing, DD secondary received the dreaded direct contact message last night. Lots of positives in past few days testing it would seem. Not sure how we can go on and on this way though, and surely an increase in rates of asymptomatic cases are just going to keep us locked down for longer?

Trustisamust · 18/03/2021 06:10

@Hazelnutlatteplease Do you mind me asking, is she now home ed due to the Covid situation or was she beforehand?
I would give anything to home ed (for many reasons) but it's not possible for us.

OP posts:
Isitbedtimeyet10 · 18/03/2021 06:11

Trustisamust yes kids not consented still allowed to school. Which seems to negate the whole testing structure surely.

Trustisamust · 18/03/2021 06:12

@Hazelnutlatteplease I'm wondering exactly the same.

OP posts:
Trustisamust · 18/03/2021 06:13

Sorry, that was meant for @isitbedtimeyet10.

OP posts:
Trustisamust · 18/03/2021 06:14

I've just checked on my son's school website and yes, children not testing are still able to attend.

I’m not disagreeing that it’s preferable for teachers to be vaccinated but this is yet another thread where words like “outbreak” are used and you then admit you don’t actually know the numbers. It could have been a single person per year.

I get it, the risk is real and you’re concerned. Just a note that if/when teachers are vaccinated - COVID will still be here. We have to live with it.
