Mask Wearing in Secondary. Shocking!

palacegirl77 · 11/03/2021 15:42

Daughter has come home from first day back in Y7 today. All 29 kids in her class wore masks for the whole day. Not one of the teachers wore them apart from in corridors. What's that about?? Why aren't they protecting their students? Seems very odd to me but thought I would raise it as I'm quite frankly sick of people moaning about irresponsible children and their selfish families. So there you have it. 100% of students in masks.

No that is right - students in masks but not teachers .. not shocking to me?

willandgrace · 11/03/2021 15:51

Why do kids wear masks in a classroom and not teachers though? It’s the same at my sons school and I have to say I was really surprised

FlibbertyGiblets · 11/03/2021 15:53

Is that not the guidance, though? Teachers to wear face coverings whilst moving through school and remove them to teach?

Sadless · 11/03/2021 15:54

Sons first day back today he said no teachers wearing mask and 110 out of 180 give consent for the test.

If we wear masks the kids can't hear us properly - within the 2m 'exclusion zone' we don't have to wear them. When walking about the classroom we do.

beckypv · 11/03/2021 15:54

We wear masks in our school. If once we are at our desk and can be 2m away from the pupils, we can take them off. If we can’t be that far away, or we circulate the room, we would put our mask on. Pupils can also remove their masks if they happen to be in a setting that lets them sit 2m apart (usually the smaller groups in a level)

Tommika · 11/03/2021 15:58

During lessons the teacher is teaching - mask removed to communicate, show expressions, be heard clearly etc
Pupils are listening, and occasionally talking etc

In corridors the teachers are just people walking around - so are to wear masks

DipSwimSwoosh · 11/03/2021 16:01

If teachers are 2m from students they do not need to wear masks. It is very hard to project your voice in a mask.

tink09 · 11/03/2021 16:04

Masks removed for teachers whilst teaching, Students struggle to hear us with masks on. We have a 2m zone that we stay in. If we move around the classroom into the student zone then masks are worn.
The students are within 2m of each other, so masks need to be worn.

notmethenwho · 11/03/2021 16:09

Hardly shocking.

As PP have said it's difficult to teach with a mask on. Not to mention the students who have hearing issues and rely on watching your lips to help them. There are more of these students than you probably realise because often they aren't fully deaf or wear an aid so it's possible your child wouldn't even know. They just happen to sit at the front of the classroom... it's all very discreet.

BeeDavis · 11/03/2021 16:12

Seriously?!? Use your brain.....

IFoundMyselfInThisBar · 11/03/2021 16:19

My daughter has been back at school since yesterday. So far all her teachers are wearing face masks whilst teaching apart from one but he is exempt as he has a medical issue. There’s a few kids not wearing them who presumably are also exempt.
The teachers in my family are also wearing face masks to teach.

margaritasbythesea · 11/03/2021 16:25

In our school in Wales, we've been told everyone has to wear a medical grade mask in the classroom all the time, which is rather worrying for me and the child I support as we are both hearing impaired. We go back on Monday. It's going to be very tough.

margaritasbythesea · 11/03/2021 16:26

Or as I suspect, completely impossible

StellaKowalski · 11/03/2021 16:28

What's your point even meant to be here?

itsgettingwierd · 11/03/2021 16:31

Threads like this make me giggle.

Parent SHOCKED

Purely because they haven't bothered to read the guidance 🤦🏼‍♀️

NailsNeedDoing · 11/03/2021 16:31

Have you ever tried to teach a class (and project your voice) while wearing a mask? It’s really not very easy.

Mind your own business about wether the teachers are wearing masks or not, it’s nothing to do with you.

palacegirl77 · 11/03/2021 16:34

That there was another thread on here calling children and families selfish because 9 out of 20 kids werent wearing masks. My point was that 100% of all children in my daughters class of 29 wore them. Maybe students arent all selfish and trying to kill their teachers?

Where is this guidance? I havent seen anything saying teachers wont wear masks? I thought that was the point in the kids wearing them? to protect the teacher because we are told on here all the time the teachers cant possibly be 2m away? But shouldnt that work both ways?

So is it nothing to do with the teacher if my child doesnt wear one then? Because yesterday anyone that suggested their child mind find it difficult was told they were selfish!

Is this in England? We are....Im wondering if the guidance is different in different areas?

Are you a teacher? I hope not.

Of course it's her business whether her daughter is/feels safe at school or not and to find out if the teachers are allowed to remove their masks or not.

palacegirl77 · 11/03/2021 16:49

The teachers are permitted to take off their masks to teach, in order to project their voices and facilitate teaching. Many parents would also be upset if teaching were impeded. The guidance permits us to do this. Hope that helps.
