Mask Wearing in Secondary. Shocking!

Daughter has come home from first day back in Y7 today. All 29 kids in her class wore masks for the whole day. Not one of the teachers wore them apart from in corridors. What's that about?? Why aren't they protecting their students? Seems very odd to me but thought I would raise it as I'm quite frankly sick of people moaning about irresponsible children and their selfish families. So there you have it. 100% of students in masks.

I think students wearing masks is to protect each other as they sit so closely to one another. It's not to protect the teacher. It's to stop closures happening & means students can stay in school.

Teachers can stay a safe distance away. I spent all day teaching in a mask this week & it's not great. Really hard to speak and get things across to the class.

Maybe once rates continue to fall & the vaccine kicks in things will return a bit more to normal.

In dd’s school students wear masks and teachers only if they cannot be two metres away. Windows are open all the time and masks are worn by everyone in corridors.
Students are in bubbles and each bubble has a different colour mask so easy to spot if bubbles are mixing.
The only issue seems to be sometimes teachers struggle to accurately hear what a student at the back of the class is saying.
Teachers at dd’s School have been absolutely fabulous throughout the pandemic.

I like the idea of tagging children visibly so they learn to stay within their group (bubble)! What a powerful lesson for young minds. Flowers

It's about time society was organised, and people stop just assuming they can speak to anyone they choose, or venuture past what the state says is safe.

Every student in dds sixth form wear masks as do all the staff. No cases since back.

I've been teaching with a mask on since October. In England. Pleased the kids are finally wearing them. I use a mic headset.

It's surprising so many people still think a 2 metre distance means it's safe when we've been shown over and over again how big a part aerosol transmission plays in covid and how the virus will travel in the air inside a room. Confused

I agree.

My DC say none of their teachers wear masks in the classroom.

I was surprised...

nonstopchanging · 12/03/2021 12:21

Especially since the DC have been told in writing they are 'expected' to take the LFTs in school, with no allowance for the fact that many DC are taking the LFTs at home under the gov scheme.

DC are wearing their masks all day, including when talking to friends in the 1 hour lunchbreak...

Smilingdonkey · 12/03/2021 12:55

Have you every tried to talk to 30 people (many of whom are not 100% committed to what you are saying!) across a room while wearing a facemask?? 😂😂

You may as well be teaching over a video camera with mute on!

It's going to be a long time until any 'catching up' happens in classrooms as it is without being able to go within 2m of a kid - but if nobody can hear anyone else we won't even be able to 'hang on' to the reduced pace of learning we have right now!

I would be happy if my school provided me with a mic headset, I would wear my mask and teach then. They haven’t though.

ChloeDecker · 13/03/2021 15:23

I’ve been wearing a mask all day every day this week (secondary) even to teach and I am so grateful the guidance changed to allow this.

I found out this week that 19 of my form, on the last day of term back in December, had Covid (they didn’t know it then). I was in a room with them for an extended ‘festive’ form time for 2 hours, with no masks (none of us) and just a couple of windows cracked an inch.

Yes. Very pleased all (apart from the exempt pupils and even some of them are wanting to wear masks anyway) are now wearing masks.

Now. If a lot of the children could also wear them over their nose too and not round their chin, that would be even better.

By the way, I have paid out of my own pocket, to have clear masks during lesson time.

Well done to your DD and her classmates, OP. Thank you.

I bought it myself and also my FFP3 masks. We'd be waiting till the new millennium for schools to keep staff well protected.

I wear one all day long but it does make it harder to be heard
