Feeling shamed for school case

sequinednostrils · 10/03/2021 17:58

My ds in yr 3 went back to school on Monday. He went in excited and fit as a fiddle. I got a call near home time to pick up early as he'd coughed a few times. Picked up, no cough Andre felt fine. But went to get him tested anyway. It was positive even though he wasn't ill.
So of course his whole class have to go home and isolate. Parents are annoyed and kids are sad.
Some are saying it's my fault for letting him go to school.
I am now feeling ill and have it, on top of worrying about people blaming me.

Of course it wasn't your fault. If he genuinely wasn't coughing or unwell before he went back, and assuming that you hadn't recently been exposed to any confirmed cases, how on earth could you have known?

Hope that you and your ds turn out to have mild cases only.

Whatwouldscullydo · 10/03/2021 18:02

1 in 3 don't show any symptoms its why they have the LF tests in high schools now.

It literally could have happened to any of them.
.sorry you are all ill

ForeverBubblegum · 10/03/2021 18:02

Oh bless, sorry you having such an rough week. I think deep down people know your not to blame, their just frustrated with the situation, and it's easy to have a focus for that frustration. In a few weeks no one will care who it was.

Msmcc1212 · 10/03/2021 18:04

Aw. So sorry that you are poorly and dealing with being blamed. If DC showing no symptoms and you weren’t then there is nothing you could have done differently.

Hope you feel better soon Flowers

frozendaisy · 10/03/2021 18:08

I wouldn't blame any parent or child but I know parents who would.

Way of the world.

Best just to concentrate on looking after yourself and son. What else can you do.

Liquorishtoffee · 10/03/2021 18:10

I’m sure he wasn’t the only one who was positive. Hope he gets better soon.

DianaT1969 · 10/03/2021 18:11

I hope you feel better soon. Out of interest, where do you think the family caught it? My reason for asking is that I thought numbers were lower everywhere. So I have started going to different supermarkets which aren't great for social distancing in the hope there is less around. (I've been vaccinated too).

sequinednostrils · 10/03/2021 18:12

Thanks. He's bouncing around wanting to be fed and I'm lying on the sofa. He has sen and doesn't make allowances when I'm ill, so I'm not getting any peace.

OP posts:
DavidsSchitt · 10/03/2021 18:14

Did you do a rapid test before they went back or is it that they're blaming you because you didn't bother?

Some parents are saying they won't because they are apparently only 50% accurate, which anyone with half a brain realises is better than nothing.

AlexaShutUp · 10/03/2021 18:16

@DavidsSchitt, are the lateral flow tests even available for primary school children? I thought it was secondary only, but don't have dc in primary any more so can't be sure!

sequinednostrils · 10/03/2021 18:16

@DianaT1969 I think likely it was school- he's been going in part time over lockdown due to me being a key worker and his ehcp.

OP posts:
sequinednostrils · 10/03/2021 18:16

No they aren't testing primary

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 10/03/2021 18:17

as he'd coughed a few times

even though he wasn't ill

Erm... coughing is a symptom yeah?

It's clearly not your fault he has it, but you should have had him tested if he's coughing.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 10/03/2021 18:17

The advice is for parents of primary kids to do them to themselves. Not the kids.

I think OP means he coughed in school.
sequinednostrils · 10/03/2021 18:19

@RuleWithAWoodenFoot he wasn't coughing at all when he went in to school. He coughed a couple of times near the end of the day so they sent him home to be on the safe side. He hasn't coughed since and isn't showing any symptoms.

OP posts:
AlexaShutUp · 10/03/2021 18:19

I presume he wasn't coughing before he went to school @RuleWithAWoodenFoot. Op said he wasn't coughing when she picked him up either, so maybe he coughed a couple of times in school but is mainly asymptomatic?

AlexaShutUp · 10/03/2021 18:19

X post

IEat · 10/03/2021 18:21

How did they know it was your child?

AlexaShutUp · 10/03/2021 18:22

The advice is for parents of primary kids to do them to themselves.

Ah, ok, I do remember reading that but I forgot. I wonder how well publicized this has been, though? Are schools communicating with parents about this, and do parents realise that they're supposed to be self testing?

Sweettea1 · 10/03/2021 18:24

This is why households that have school children can now order fast flow tests to test b4 going to school.

sequinednostrils · 10/03/2021 18:28

I've only just found out about the lateral flow tests, the school aren't advising parents should test. It's not well known among the parents here.
@IEat they don't, but they're on Facebook saying how whoever it was shouldn't have been allowed to go in.

OP posts:
starbrightstarlight8888 · 10/03/2021 18:28

Did you do the lateral flow tests for the adults in your house before he went back to school? All households with school children should be taking 2 tests a week although this isn't compulsory, it is advisable.

Fembot123 · 10/03/2021 18:28

I was talking to my 8 year old this am as someone was on the radio saying their year 5 childs bubble had burst already and he said ‘It’s not their fault though’ so an 8 year old gets it, some people are so thick. Hope you get well soon and those that have lost their temper feel bad soon too

ItsMarch · 10/03/2021 18:32

Sorry OP but if a child in my DC’s class was sent home for coughing and then tested positive I’d be annoyed!

I know it’s irrational but the suspicion would obviously be there that you sent them in anyway.

Like others have said, it will all be forgotten in a couple of weeks.
