If you have an autoimmune condition which vaccine would you prefer?

I have mine booked. I think it will be Moderna or Pfizer but could be J&J as first shipments are arriving here in NYC today, which seems broadly similar to AZ.

I have type 1 diabetes and hypothyroidism and quite frankly don't care in what I get as I just want a vaccine in order to have one less thing to think about and focus on supporting my mum who has cancer.

However, if we were in an ideal world, and you could choose any vaccine you fancy - which would you pick if you had an autoimmune condition already?

I go have several autoimmune conditions and don’t mind any of them!

HolmeH · 02/03/2021 18:35

My mum has two auto immune conditions, one being hyperthyroidism.. she didn’t get a choice but had AZ. Her consultant said they were all a safe & very protective option!

QueenStromba · 02/03/2021 19:10

I've got various diagnosed and undiagnosed health conditions, probably including an autoimmune condition and after being very sceptical about the vaccines I leapt at the chance of a Pfizer due to all of the good data that's come out of Israel.

SingANewSongChickenTikka · 02/03/2021 19:31

I also have type 1 and hypothyroidism and really don’t mind which I get. Mines booked for next week, I suspect it will be Pfizer as everyone I know who’s had it at my GP surgery has been given Pfizer, but won’t know until I get there.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 02/03/2021 19:32

The one that goes in my arm.

CeibaTree · 02/03/2021 19:32

I have hashimoto's and didn't even think about it when I went for my vaccine, I was just happy to be having one. I got the Oxford AZ one and had no problems with side effects. What are you thinking OP - do you think one of the vaccines is not so good for autoimmune conditions? I haven't read anything like that, so I'd be interested to hear if any literature regarding this..

QueenPaw · 02/03/2021 19:34

I've got several and have had AZ which I'm happy with

SirVixofVixHall · 02/03/2021 20:23

I have Hashimoto’s and Coeliac disease so I am watching with interest. I also have allergies though so maybe I have to have the AZ ?

RavingAnnie · 02/03/2021 20:29

I've just posted about this on another thread. I have an autoimmune condition at the moment and are symptomatic. I also have loads of inflammatory conditions. I think anecdotally the Pfizer jab seems to have fewer side effects and so have a slight preference for that but don't think we'll be able to pick. I'm not sure my evidence based study of side effects reported on SM threads will hold much weight! Lol!

FuzzyPuffling · 02/03/2021 20:36

I have lupus with associated kidney issues and had AZ.

Some side effects, as expected, ( I react to everything) but I am so bloody glad and grateful for a Vaccination.

Quite a few people on the lupus forum I'm on have said that their rheumatologist has a preference for AZ. Mine just told me to get a jab, any jab, as soon as I could.

MoMuntervary · 02/03/2021 20:39

I have two autoimmune conditions and was delighted with any vaccine. I got Pfizer, but would have taken whatever was offered with a song in my heart.

CoffeeDay · 02/03/2021 21:52

I have lupus and had virtually zero side effects with Pfizer (both shots) which I'm thrilled about! The first one made me tired and a bit nauseous for 24 hours. The second one was only a mild headache the same evening and absolutely nothing the next day, not even a sore arm.

I was terrified of catching covid due to it what it might do to my already dodgy immune system. The potential side effects of the vaccine greatly outweighed the risks.

Just anecdotally, the majority of people we know (without autoimmune illness) had few or no side effects with Pfizer.

Phyz · 02/03/2021 22:18

I have auto immune disease and had AZ. I would have said yes to any vaccine. Zero side effects and I am very happy to have had it. The news coming out on efficacy in real life is also brilliant.

phlebasconsidered · 02/03/2021 22:42

I have Hashimotos, Reynauds and borderline adrenal issues, subclinical Addisons and asthma. I'm a 49 year old teacher and i've been told I am not group 6 and to wait.

Bet your arse if I get it and die it will be because I have "underlying conditions" though!

Firebird83 · 02/03/2021 23:42

I have Hashimoto’s and don’t mind which one I get.

Davros · 02/03/2021 23:58

I've got scleroderma and I had Ox-AZ. No side effects whatsoever, not even a sore arm

SirVixofVixHall · 03/03/2021 11:53

I am interested too as I remember a post on another thread that suggested AZ might be better ? My GP is hopeless and won’t answer any questions on this so I am a bit worried.
Davros · 03/03/2021 14:50

Is there a charity for your condition? They should be able to tell you if it might be in their website.

stampsurprise · 03/03/2021 14:53

Pulmonary sarcoidosis - got the AZ with no side-effects whatsoever.

somewheresorted · 03/03/2021 14:58

I have RA and dermatomyositis and had the AZ vaccine, with minimal side effects. I just hope that it works and that I have a good immune response.

Bagelsandbrie · 03/03/2021 15:17

I have Addison’s, lupus, Sjorgens, asthma, kidney issues and a pituitary tumour and I had the AZ. I didn’t have a choice but that’s fine as I would have had either. Felt absolutely hideous for 3 days and think it caused a lupus flare BUT I am still so so grateful to have had it and would have it again any day over Covid!

turquoisewaters · 03/03/2021 16:34

If J&J is similar to AZ I would prefer it over Pfizer of Moderna (I find the technology not so complex, taking into account it will have to interact with a very unpredictable immune system).

Having said that, I'm not a doctor and as it was said up thread, data coming from Israel, the UK and other countries is very encouraging.

Calmingvibrations · 03/03/2021 16:35

I was told any vaccine as long as not a live one.

percheron67 · 03/03/2021 16:54

I have a white blood cell problem. I had the Oxford one - no choice given. Sore arm and a bit shivery the day after. No other problems.

FuzzyPuffling · 03/03/2021 17:19

bagelsandbrie (which has made me hungry) I'm beginning to think that the vaccine kicked off a lupus flare for me too, since I had one day (day 4) where I felt a bit better, before a further 5 days of feeling grotty.

All is well now though and I am HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY to be vaccinated!
