Asking if there are any vaccine doses going spare...

Titsywoo · 01/03/2021 23:03

Is it ok to do? I have an appt at the end of the clinic tomorrow for my first jab and DH is driving me. Would it be rude for him to ask if there are any leftovers or is it cheeky/rude?

I think no harm in asking!

3littlewords · 01/03/2021 23:12

Worst thing that can happen is they say no you've lost nothing by asking

Duckyneedsaclean · 01/03/2021 23:13

We'd probably give him one at my vaccine centre. Can't hurt to ask.

Titsywoo · 01/03/2021 23:21

Thanks. The only thing I thought might be tricky after that is getting your second dose since you haven't booked via the official channels?

Every pt that gets the vaccine needs to be documented. Here in Scotland we do it via the TURAS app. I believe that once you get your first dose, the system automatically records that having received it and generates a second appointment. In my clinic if we have spare at the end of the night, we would give it to him

Titsywoo · 02/03/2021 00:16

Great thank you. Worth a shot then (no pun intended!).

My DH was in group 4 CEV and I went with him to drive back, as advised, and they asked if he had a carer. he doesn't but I jokingly said "only me can I get a vaccine in that basis?" and they did me too. You have to know your NHS number but once you've had the first one, you're then on the system after a few days and can book your second one online (or by calling 119) whenever you want. It will automatically work it the 11/12 week gap.

Be warned that if it's a GP hub not a national vaccination centre they will probaby say no.

minchinfin · 02/03/2021 00:37

or they may be less strict now too now that the vulnerable people are done?

MatHancockLovesMyTits · 02/03/2021 00:46

But they haven't in most areas.
Kinsters · 02/03/2021 02:14

Hope he can get it! Definitely worth an ask imo.

Mindymomo · 02/03/2021 06:43

I went with my DH late evening last week, when he had his. He was told he was having the Pfizer vaccine, so I asked if there were spare for myself. They asked my age and I told them 59 and they said no. His appointment was 7.20 pm and they closed the doors 7.30 pm, so presume they used all that was available. It’s worth asking though.

QuidditchQueen · 02/03/2021 06:49

Are people being advised not to drive afterwards? Not hears that, drove to snd from mine.

picknmix1984 · 02/03/2021 06:58

It's all logged on a National database with automatic recall so if he had his first dose it would recall him for his second.

Ifailed · 02/03/2021 07:00

Are people being advised not to drive afterwards?

I was told to sit in my car for 15 minutes before driving. It did strike me that if I had gone into anaphylaxis shock, what would happen - I'd be sat in my vehicle in a car park on my own?

EasterIssland · 02/03/2021 07:02

I did some volunteering this weekend in my local gp. When I went to return my stuff I thought about asking but the doctor mentioned that they were calling people in the last minute so they’d go in 5mins to get vaccines so I decided not to ask as they were vaccinating vulnerable people so they need it more urgently than me.

Good luck. No harm in asking

littlegirlost · 02/03/2021 07:49

My mum went with my dad who's 70 and asked. Guy on the door said yes, second guy in the building took her details and gave her the vaccine card. Mum cried with relief. Got to the nurse, sleeve rolled up ready and got told no as they were only doing 65y and over. She's 64. She just sat there and cried.

MarinPrime · 02/03/2021 07:50

They won't know if there are any left overs unless you've got the last appointment of the session.

ExcusesAndAccusations · 02/03/2021 07:54

Astra Zeneca jabs can be kept in the fridge for longer once made up I think so there’s not the same pressure to use them up immediately as there was with the Pfizer’s which were used more at the beginning of the vaccination campaign.

BruceAndNosh · 02/03/2021 07:55

Possibly if you are very late appt.
But we have had family members asking about spare doses when they have an 1030 appt!

sandgrown · 02/03/2021 08:03

@EasterIssland at the vaccination hub where I volunteer they have vaccinated all volunteers whatever their age and we are tested every time. I guess it’s because we are meeting a lot of vulnerable people.

It could be. I was a parking Marshall for a few hours so not the same risk as those that are in the building and that go everyday.

DinosaurDiana · 02/03/2021 08:23

At my hub you wouldn’t get it. They invite as many people as we have vaccines, if we have any DNA’s the admin ring the next people on the list.
This is a GP hub though, so they have people to ring.

WanderingMilly · 02/03/2021 08:25

I asked when I went for my jab the other day as someone had come with me but unfortunately there were no spares that day. They don't mind you asking at all, but they might say no.

CornishYarg · 02/03/2021 08:35

No harm in asking; lots of people do where I volunteer.

Are people being advised not to drive afterwards?
At our centre, people are asked after their jab if they're driving home. If so, they are asked to sit and wait 15 mins before leaving. They have a few chairs with perspex screens round them for people to sit in while waiting.

This is in a church hall so not a GP hub
