My DH got one by ringing the pharmacy near us who are jabbing. He range at 5.30 knowing they close at 6.00 and asked if they had any spares or if he could join a waiting list. He mentioned he was just a year below the current cut-off and crucially, that he could be there in les than 10 minutes.
They said they had one spare dose. They clearly wanted to close in time and were happy to hear from someone close to the cut off age who was saying they would leap in the car immediately.
I drove him there and had been and had it and was home in less than 30 mins from when he had phoned.
If you can identify where the pharmacies are that are jabbing in your area (and some still are) and work out their closing time, a quick call perhaps 30-45 mins before closing is worth a shot. It only really works if you can get there pretty quick. Even if they haven’t got a spare on the day you ring, ask if you can be added to a waiting list, emphasising how quickly you can be there. And ask if it’s worth you ringing each day. Some prefer to have someone who calls and says they can actually get there, than having a list of people who they ring, only to find out they can’t come.
It’s always worth trying. As long as you’re polite and accepting of the fact it might well not work out, places do have spares after no-shows and a bird in the hand offering to drive in immediately, or being at the door, is worth more to them than the bird in the bush who might be in a list and not answer or be able to come.
Doses for 1st supplies are still low and GPs not getting new deliveries for this purpose until end of 1st week in May at earliest, so fewer places are actually giving 1st doses currently, so finding the places that actually are isn’t so easy. Most big centres don’t have a phone number, so for them, actually being there going past and asking might be the best bet...again, nearer end of day is more likely.
