To think you wouldn’t get vaccinated if you knew your risk from covid was low

Just imagine for a moment there was a calculator that could predict your risk of getting seriously ill or dying from covid. If it turned out you were low risk would you still follow all the advice such as socially distancing and getting vaccinated?

YABU - yes I would still follow the rules and advice even if I were low risk
YANBU - no I wouldn’t endure the hardship of not seeing friends/family and I wouldn’t bother with getting vaccinated as my risk of becoming unwell would be low.

Yes, because I'm not a selfish twat. It's not about me. The more people who have the vaccine, the better off everyone else will be.

minipie · 27/02/2021 21:49

I’ve always believed I am low risk but have followed the advice anyway. For the sake of others mainly so as not to be a spreader, and because of the tiny chance I wouldn’t be ok.

Doingitaloneandproud · 27/02/2021 21:49

Yep, my risk is low but this isn't just about me. It's also the reason myself and son have all our vaccinations up to date. My risk maybe low but someone else's may not be. When I get offered the vaccine I will be taking it, won't be offered it for a while yet though.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 27/02/2021 21:49

There are calculators Hmm

I'm low risk. But the point is not everyone is. My dad is a 73 year old asthmatic with a heart condition, I'll get vaccinated to reduce risk to him and everyone else. That's the whole point of vaccination, reducing transmission to the most vulnerable.

MrBullinaChinaShop · 27/02/2021 21:49
  1. there is a calculator that tells you your risk
  2. mine is very low. I am following the rules because they’re the law and so that I don’t pass it to others if I happen to catch it.

@The6thQueen

Yes, because I’m not protecting me. I’m protecting the vulnerable. I’m not really at serious risk from mumps, measles etc, nor are my children. They have them to protect others who can’t have the vaccine.
Exactly this.

YABU - it’s not about people protecting themselves. It’s about protecting others and society at large.

I find it disturbing that people even think otherwise TBH - “stuff it, I’m alright so sod the rest of them.” It seems a bit psychotic.

DioneTheDiabolist · 27/02/2021 21:50

My sister had Covid, I dont fancy it. So i will get the vaccine, same way as I get a flu vaccine.

1Morewineplease · 27/02/2021 21:51

I'm in my 50s and am waiting on tenterhooks for my vaccine. I haven't seen my mum since last Easter . She's quite frail but I live a long way away.
She is frightened of Covid and is frightened of seeing me and my family. Yet she's desperate to see us.
Can't wait to see her.

DareIask · 27/02/2021 21:51

You need to try and understand herd immunity.

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 27/02/2021 21:51

We all need to get vaccinated so that those of us who are at low risk of serious illness or death are not acting as asymptomatic incubators for a mutating virus.

So of course I would get vaccinated.

kooked · 27/02/2021 21:51

Yes, because I’m not protecting me. I’m protecting the vulnerable.

Aye, first comment hits the spot - again.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 27/02/2021 21:51

You are also in a wrong section. I reported it to MN so they can move you to the correct topic. 👍

PhylisNightsIsAwesome · 27/02/2021 21:53

But if you don't get it how will you travel without your vaccination card? Getting plane. Train, bus?

ddl1 · 27/02/2021 21:53

I'd still follow the guidelines and get vaccinated as soon as I could (though I would accept that if I was low risk, I would not be in a top priority group for it.) It's not just for me; if's for those I might infect, and for helping to get the country back on its feet and back to reasonably normal functioning.

Arrierttyclock · 27/02/2021 21:54

I don't really know why you wouldn't get vaccinated??? FWIW I work in a hospital where a girl I work with is 18, healthy weight and has had long COVID and been off since Xmas. I don't get these posts just get vaccinated ffs

Theforest · 27/02/2021 21:54

It is how vaccinations work.

RedcurrantPuff · 27/02/2021 21:57

I have some health issues but the chances of death are still low, but I don’t want to get it at all as I don’t want to have to self isolate. If the 80 odd percent of people who only get mild illness had the “fuck it” attitude we’d be completely screwed!

OutComeTheWolves · 27/02/2021 21:57

My risk of getting particularly ill from covid is very low. I'll probably still get vaccinated though because it needs to be a collective effort to protect those who would get very ill.

pointythings · 27/02/2021 21:58

I've had the first dose and will have my second in April - I'm an NHS worker so despite being relatively low risk, I'm eligible. The evidence coming out now is that the vaccines greatly reduce transmission, and that is what it's all about. You might be at low risk from COVID, but without a vaccine, you would be more likely to pass it on to people who were not low risk or who could not have the vaccine for medical reasons. Why would you do a thing like that?

SunbathingDragon · 27/02/2021 21:58

Of course I’d still have the vaccination because I want to spend time with my parents and in-laws; I went to be able to go to shops and places without worrying about passing the virus on; I want the economy to get through this etc etc.

I have had the vaccination but most of the reasoning wasn’t for it to benefit me by not getting the virus but to benefit others.

MajesticWhine · 27/02/2021 22:02

I have no fear of covid and am very low risk. But of course I would get vaccinated (already have actually). The benefit of vaccinations is at population level not for the individual.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 27/02/2021 22:03

Yep, I love a vaccine!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/02/2021 22:03

Anyone who wants this series of lockdowns and social deprivation to end would surely want the vaccine.

IstandwithJackieWeaver · 27/02/2021 22:04

Absolutely I will have the vaccine even though I'm at low risk. As lots of others have stated, it's not only about me.
