We should be vaccinating children and parents

PicsInRed · 27/02/2021 14:19

Just that. We have hubs for age groups, we have GP led vaccination for at risk groups (though I know this has been a spectacular failure).

We are about to open schools and chilcare, with the intentional result of fully opening offices to full time work hours again.

Surely it makes sense to operate vaccination drives in schools - for children and parents? Curb the spread through schools - and much through offices - before it happens?

Otherwise, we're going to end up locked down again.

On that note - shouldn't we be vaccinating in-office workers generally?

Neither vaccine has yet been licensed for children under the age of 16.

Cookerhood · 27/02/2021 14:21

The aim is to reduce deaths. Did you see the news conference yesterday?
Apart from anything the vaccines haven't been tested (trials have just started) or licensed in children. Imagine the outcry "Unlicensed vaccine given to children"

ErrolTheDragon · 27/02/2021 14:23

The vaccine hasn't been tested and approved for children yet, so that's a bit of a non-starter.

The current approach is getting through the whole population quicker than just about anywhere except Israel, and whilst there are plenty of groups who can make a case for priority after the first tranche of older and CEV people, it's hard to make a clear case for any. So whatever gets through the population quickest isn't an unreasonable approach.

picknmix1984 · 27/02/2021 14:24

No we shouldn't! Honestly the comments gets more ridiculous each day!

MrBullinaChinaShop · 27/02/2021 14:25

We can’t vaccinate children, it’s not authorised for under 16’s.
We are vaccinating parents... once their age group is called.

MrsFezziwig · 27/02/2021 14:25

Clinical trials have only just started on older children, JVT says it is possible that the vaccine may be licensed for them by the end of the year. So this thread is pointless.

MrsGradyOldLady · 27/02/2021 14:25

You can't force people to be vaccinated and I don't think there would be a massive uptake amongst parents for an untested unlicensed vaccine. Did you know it hasn't been approved for under 16s? Or just not care?

OliveTree75 · 27/02/2021 14:27

What a pointless thread

FourTeaFallOut · 27/02/2021 14:27

No. Vaccinating by age if the most efficient way of moving through the population to reduce illness and death.

TheCatWithTheFluffyTail · 27/02/2021 14:28

Let’s look at the wider picture and appreciate how brilliantly we are doing at getting everyone (who wants to be) vaccinated. Overall the organisation and roll out for this is going exceptionally well. Parents will have the opportunity to be vaccinated, at least once, by the start of the next academic year, and I’m sure it won’t be long before there will be an approved vaccine for children.

MrBullinaChinaShop · 27/02/2021 14:28

Who would you bump down the priority list in favour of ‘parents’?

PicsInRed · 27/02/2021 14:30

It wasn't licenced for anyone, then it was tested on adults, then it was licenced for adults. It's being tested on kids now - once tested it should be licensed for kids and should then be offered immediately.

Is there any vaccine which is not allowed to be given to children over 12 mos old? Is there any vaccine safe in adults which was proven unsafe in children? Some are even given intentionally in pregnancy to induce some immunity in the foetus to protect baby after it's born.

I'm not talking about saving the lives of the vaccinated obviously - these are generally low risk groups - I'm talking about reducing spread to regain and retain our freedom - for us and for our kids.

Otherwise spread will increase and we will be locked down again. Psychologically and economically, it doesn't bear thinking about.

From what I understand, they are prioritising vaccinations for those most likely to die from covid, rather than those most likely to get it. I think this makes sense. I’m a teacher and would like the vaccine, but not if that means I get the jab instead of someone more likely to die from covid.

saffire · 27/02/2021 14:31

Would you like to offer your children up for the vaccination trials?

titchy · 27/02/2021 14:31

And it will be Confused Or do you know something we don't?

shavenraven · 27/02/2021 14:33

Why would we vaccinate children before the forties and fifties age group? They are more at risk than children

MrBullinaChinaShop · 27/02/2021 14:33

And how do you know that’s not going to happen?

titchy · 27/02/2021 14:33

Or are you suggesting we just go ahead and give the jab to kids anyway, before the trials have completed? Shock

I'm really not sure what point you're trying to make.

PicsInRed · 27/02/2021 14:33

@MrBullinaChinaShop

Who would you bump down the priority list in favour of ‘parents’?
Well, eligible group 6 (or even 4) people are being missed at GPs, whilst healthy people in their 50s, and soon 40s (and even younger depending on postcode and "who you know" lottery) can be vaccinated in parallel at hubs, so I imagine it would work in exactly the same way.

Otherwise spread will increase and we will be locked down again.

Why will we be? Those most likely to be ill and need hospital care are the ones who have already been vaccinated or else are being vaccinated now. Once everyone has been vaccinated, we will start with the most vulnerable with boosters. As soon as the vaccine is available for children (and it’s already being given to some very vulnerable children, so no reason to assume it won’t be considered safe) then we will start vaccinating them (assuming parents agree). Ultimately, everyone who wants to be and can be will be vaccinated. I don’t think we will have another national lockdown although I do think we will have more restriction to abide by.

MrsGradyOldLady · 27/02/2021 14:35

Thank God Sage don't trawl mumsnet looking for the opinions of bored armchair experts.

PicsInRed · 27/02/2021 14:35

@shavenraven

Because as soon as we have schools and therefore offices fully open again, spread will be rapid and we will be locked down again.

I've read that there's definitely a school of thought that in due course, children will be routinely vaccinated against covid as part of their immunisation schedule, to help protect against outbreaks. Similar to the pneumococcal vacc which afaik has been good news not just for children but also for older people in their populations.

But we're not at that point yet.

CodenameVillanelle · 27/02/2021 14:37

Otherwise spread will increase and we will be locked down again. Psychologically and economically, it doesn't bear thinking about.

We didn't get locked down to stop cases, we got locked down to stop hospitalisations and deaths. It doesn't really matter if it spreads through kids. Even if that does lead to variation the vaccine will likely still provide protection to vulnerable people.

Mintjulia · 27/02/2021 14:37

In the U.K. there are roughly 8 million schoolchildren.

We don't have a limitless supply of vaccine so jabs for children make no sense at all, even if it was approved for children.

Keeping people out of hospitals is the priority. The rates are low now. If we can keep up the restrictions for another couple of months we'll be restriction free by June.
