Hi all, having covid vaccination Sunday! Pretty sure it will be AZ we know a fair few people who have had it in same place and it’s been AZ.

I’m really pleased of course but what kind of side effects should I be concerned about? I know everyone is different but heard a few stories of people feeling poop after having it!

What do I expect?

Somebody told me they felt ill for 2 weeks afterwards yet another said they felt groggy for about 12 hours then fine.

Hoping because I’m having it Sunday I’ll be fine by Monday for the week!

I don’t deal well with being ill with two disabled children (it’s hard work). I know that the vaccination will be better than covid though of course!

I'm sure I read on here someone else had that delayed reaction with the lymph nodes. Not surprising really as your immune system will be doing a lot of work over the next few weeks.

Coffeeandaride · 28/02/2021 12:57

Not reliable statistics! In my work 10 people vaccinated and 2 had bit flu like illness for 2 day after. High temp and tiredness but not enough to not be able to work. 8 had no symptoms except a slight sore arm.

JeansNTees · 28/02/2021 15:08

Thanks Chillihat, found it now when I searched only in the coronavirus section.

JeansNTees · 28/02/2021 15:10

Oh and hope it went well for you today, Beep Smile I was only affected the next day and paracetamol really helped.

QueenOfTheDoubleWide · 28/02/2021 15:17

I find all of this fascinating because when the vaccinations began in December there seemed to be very few side effects reported other than a sore arm. As the roll-out has progressed the reported effects are seeming to be far more widespread and more severe.
I'm curious if this is:
a) The effects of AZ vs Pfizer
b) The fact that those being vaccinated now are younger so have more immune response (yet NHS staff were done in the first group and, anecdotally, didn't seem to have as many reactions)
c) A very big nocebo effect, that people are now expecting reactions so are getting them

Chillihat · 28/02/2021 15:21

Probably a combination of a and b. And also perhaps the first people to be vaccinated in the NHS didn't want to shout about it or say anything that would put people off having it, or because they are out and about at work so can discuss these things with colleagues. I've barely left the house for 2 months so tend to discuss things online that I would normally discuss with people irl.

I don't believe that you can get 38C+ fevers and migraine level headaches from a supposed nocebo effect.

I thought they'd reported on two people with very serious allergic reactions on the first day, or maybe the second day, in December. Haven't heard anything similar since.

Youngest person I know who had the jab was my son, late 20s, 29 days after confirmed covid so he was expecting a reaction but he was 100% fine. Maybe it is hereditary as no one in my family has had any issue with either vaccine.

JeansNTees · 28/02/2021 15:28

Queen I didn't read anything about side effects of the AZ jab for this reason, didn't want to worry myself. Still got them though.

EnFlique · 28/02/2021 15:33

Had AZ yesterday afternoon, bit of a sore arm afterwards. Today my arm is more sore but not awful. Had a very mild headache earlier but that has gone.
That’s it!

Needmoresleep · 28/02/2021 16:49

And d) people who have already been exposed to coronavirus and so their body responds quickly.

I have had all sorts of exotic and less exotic vaccines. I normally have no problems. I’m eight days and counting on the sore arm, though it getting better. This is the first day I have not needed painkillers.

MarieFromStTropez · 28/02/2021 18:46

I had to inject myself every day for 8 months. I still had pain in my gluteal muscle a year later. It happens with all sorts of injections, not just the COVID vaccine. And it’s a small price to pay.

QueenPaw · 28/02/2021 19:31

@WanderingMilly weirdly my parents (they suspect) have both had covid they refused to get tested
I haven't had it
Parents no side effects, I had every one listed!

Needmoresleep · 28/02/2021 21:32

Marie, that sounds grim. This went across my shoulder and up my neck, so it’s been difficult to find a comfortable sitting or sleeping position, even with heavy duty pain killers. I was beginning to think that they had widened the gap between the two doses because people like me needed time to forget.

But it’s almost over, and the person I know who ‘always’ reacts and was most nervous (but on the shielding list and genuinely vulnerable had she caught the virus) had no problems at all.

CurbsideProphet · 28/02/2021 22:06

@MsJuniper I also had the middle of the night chills/shakes, approx 11 hours after my AZ, then a 24 hour migraine. I haven't had covid either as far as I know, just unlucky with the side effects!

TomorrowIsAnotherDae · 01/03/2021 05:26

I had AZ yesterday (29/02) at 9:45 am.

No side effects for me. Some slight discomfort in my arm at the injection site, but only when I touch it. No flu symptoms or tiredness, in fact I was up and about at 5am today for the first time in ages.

I’ve not had COVID and I think I am blood type ‘O’ something (speculation that O blood groups are less likely to get side effects)

maddiemookins16mum · 01/03/2021 05:55

My DP had it Sat at 1.30pm. Felt tired and a bit spaced out on Sumday, mild headache.

JaninaDuszejko · 01/03/2021 06:05

Of course you can. Not Covid-19 related but there have been cases of people dying because of the nocebo effect. It's pretty fascinating - nocebo effect.

PetesBigSausagePizza · 01/03/2021 06:23

RE: The nocebo effect.

I'd heard that you can get fluey symptoms after the second jab, but hadn't read into it. Just stuff I'd vaguely heard. I knew one person who had it and said they had a headache. I just found this thread and clicked on it as I'm only just over feeling like absolute death after my AZ vaccine.

Had the jab Sat morning. Felt fine through the day, maybe a bit tired.

Then chills all night. Fever the next day and could barely get out of bed with muscle pain and exhaustion.

Woke up this morning (Monday) right as rain. So I wasn't expecting the symptoms but I got them pretty much exactly the same as everyone else and along the same timeline.

There's nothing wrong with saying a vaccine can have side effects we don't have to claim people are having "nocebo" effects. The side effect of Covid can be dying so I'm well prepared to risk feeling like shit for a few days.

PetesBigSausagePizza · 01/03/2021 06:26

I didn't get a headache either and I was expecting one as I am prone to them and figured if it was a side effect I'd certainly get it.

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 01/03/2021 06:56

I had AZ and had no reaction whatsoever.

Steph64 · 01/03/2021 07:19

I had AZ and was delighted to get a bit of a sore arm the next day, because up until then I wasn’t convinced the nurse had done it as I had felt nothing at the time.

Dowser · 01/03/2021 11:56

@thenightsky

I had it on a Sunday lunchtime and started to feel ill around 10pm. Had a shockingly bad night with my legs jerking and my neck muscles going into spasms, plus a shocking headache and chattering teeth. I went to bed wearing a coat on top of all my clothes and still felt cold. Had to spend the Monday in bed, dosed up with paracetamol and catching up on missing sleep. Suddenly felt loads better at 10pm on Monday night. Fine by Tuesday.
Good grief that was terrifying I hope you are feeling so much better now

Sounds a bit like us nurse Kristi simmonds who had the moderna virus
She’s still not 100 per cent

This was her at her worst

www.facebook.com/100062868107451/posts/114324990673104?sfns=mo

But I believe she’s a lot better now
This was her post on Thursday
I would like to Thank God for a good day today! Tremors were way less and no.major episode!

Dowser · 01/03/2021 11:58

Meant to say she was vaxxed towards end of January
