For breaking lockdown

www.edp24.co.uk/news/second-home-owners-fined-for-breaching-lockdown-7789952

They have been cracking down on different areas since January, and fined others too www.edp24.co.uk/news/second-home-owners-objections-pandemic-6915894

When is 'day tripping' allowed again? April?

Ridiculous, if they own a home there and presumably pay council tax (that pay for local services!) why can’t they use that as their base for the lockdown?
Also if they are at their homes and socially distancing from others on walks, shops etc
how are they ‘killing people?!’
I’d imagine, if challenged, these fines wouldn’t stand up to actual legal scrutiny.

EdithWeston · 25/02/2021 13:40

These news articles aren't about those who have used their second homes throughout lockdown.

It's those who have appeared part way through, and/or are coming and going a lot.

WithMyOldCockLinnet · 25/02/2021 13:43

I suppose basing themselves there throughout lockdown is one thing - like students who went back before the Jan Lockdown - but it is the travelling from one area to another for the weekend etc that is not allowed.

To be honest I understand why communities in places like Norfolk worry. A few weeks ago a huge % of the population on my London borough was actively infected. Most places on the N Norfolk coast the infection rate was still tiny.

ShowOfHands · 25/02/2021 13:47

Definitely not people staying for the duration. It's people popping up for a walk or a weekend jaunt.

This sort of behaviour.

Beaniecats · 25/02/2021 13:52

Police abuse of power

WithMyOldCockLinnet · 25/02/2021 13:56

@ShowOfHands

Surely 4 hours in an afternoon is a reasonable time to be away from your car on a walk? I go for 4 hour walks around my local parks and area. Not sure why they called out helicopters etc, Confused .

For many with second homes it's perhaps worth taking the chance of a fine to go there, I believe it is only £100 if paid within 14 days.

Mydogisagentleman · 25/02/2021 14:04

I live in the area.
We do not have the infrastructure in terms of hospital beds for the local population

VeryScary · 25/02/2021 19:44

Mydogisagentleman

We’re seeing the same here in Cornwall.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 25/02/2021 19:46

You're allowed to go to second homes for essential maintenance.

This. So much this! We have people turning up potentially bringing the virus with them and acting "on holiday" with lack of care for restrictions. They then either get ill themselves and require treatment where we have a tiny hospital which is very overstretched as it is, with nursing staff being redeployed 40 miles away to the next nearest hospital which is short-staffed and in crisis, or bugger off to their usual homes having spread it around here. Posty husband is furious with the number of deliveries he is making to homes which are not usually occupied, and those which are occupied only Fridays to Mondays.
ShowOfHands · 25/02/2021 20:05

@WithMyOldCockLinnet a 4hr walk isn't the issue. Would you drive from London to the Norfolk Coast for a walk?

They drove over 100 miles, parked up next to the sea in conditions the coastguard described as the worst he had ever seen and went for a wander. There were 20ft waves.

peak2021 · 25/02/2021 20:06

Well done Norfolk Police, pity they can only fine them. I'd have points on driving licences after a court case were it my decision.

User7538943 · 25/02/2021 20:38

They use fines so the rich can carry on doing as they please and it keeps the plebs under control.

poppycat10 · 25/02/2021 20:51

Basing yourself there for at least a few weeks is fine, but coming and going isn't.

I don't know why people assume that everyone who has a second home lives somewhere that is plague-ridden, by the way and is bringing the virus with them. It doesn't travel on the outside of cars. After a whole year we still have the pitch fork brigade.

Posty husband is furious with the number of deliveries he is making to homes which are not usually occupied, and those which are occupied only Fridays to Mondays and he knows that how? I doubt all these second home owners are ordering parcels to be delivered when they are not at the second homes on Saturdays. Letters don't get delivered on Saturdays unless you have a parcel where I am, and we're lucky to even get a daily delivery. Also - you can go out on a Saturday, it doesn't mean you've gone back to your first home.

Stellaris22 · 25/02/2021 20:57

I live in East Anglia and there was outrage when coastguards lives were put at risk when day trippers went missing, so glad people are getting fined www.edp24.co.uk/news/search-and-rescue-for-londoners-travelling-to-winterton-7312958

I can see the sea from my house and am not allowed to go to the beach to exercise as I would have to drive - [a 10 minute drive but I live on the side of a mountain]and people from the same town have been fined for driving to the beach to exercise. This is in Wales.

Tibtom · 25/02/2021 21:22

We have a second home. My dh visited ten days ago - 40 mile drive. He had to clear snow off the roof and check it over after record cold temperatures. Fortunately the worst problem was some of the snow had bought guttering down, but a burst pipe would have portentially affected neighbouring properties too. Insurance also requires us to check it.

TheFairyCaravan · 25/02/2021 21:24

Good!

DS2 and DDIL are nurses in Norfolk. They’ve made huge sacrifices over the past year and are absolutely bloody knackered. . They can not afford to have people come in from here, there and everywhere bringing different strains with them. They just don’t have the capacity in the hospitals to deal with it all. It’s really not fair on the people who live there.

Ostryga · 25/02/2021 21:28

This!!

The rich can afford the fines, it’s no more than a slap on the wrist. It’s us commoners that have to stick by the rules. I wish people would think more critically.

Although yes v annoying having idiots sparking a search and rescue. Although one story I did funny was a couple getting a hefty fine for being caught shagging at our local broad, not from the same household! Grin

ImFree2doasiwant · 25/02/2021 21:28

@WithMyOldCockLinnet at the end of last year there was a similar occurrence, turned out to be a man windsurfing. His body was never found.

Presumably it was known that the car wasn't local, and going to the beach for a 4 hr walk isn't within the rules, so I guess the worst was assumed.

ImFree2doasiwant · 25/02/2021 21:30

Im local to Hunstanton, it's definitely not long term stays. There are loads if holiday homes, with owners and their friends and families, coming and going very regularly. Groups of several.households in some cases.
