For breaking lockdown

www.edp24.co.uk/news/second-home-owners-fined-for-breaching-lockdown-7789952

They have been cracking down on different areas since January, and fined others too www.edp24.co.uk/news/second-home-owners-objections-pandemic-6915894

When is 'day tripping' allowed again? April?

Properties need to be checked on and maintained at intervals. So it would not be too difficult to find a few essential checks/urgent jobs you needed to do on your second home. Blocked loo, drippy tap, boiler losing pressure, pipes need lagging, etc. It would be too far to drive back that day.

Rather like going out for a drive but having a load of shopping in a bag that you are taking to a vulnerable relative/friend who cant get out.

Its nice to know the envious local snitches are active!

That’s awful
I drive all over
Had a lovely day in Durham on Sunday..loads out
Was a nice bit of normal
Exercise has to begin and end at home. Drives me mad.

MajesticWhine · 25/02/2021 22:02

I hardly think it's doing any harm if people keep themselves to themselves. The virus spreads by close indoor person to person contact. I don't blame anyone for having a change of scenery. Haven't you had enough?

lljkk · 25/02/2021 22:05

Presumably it was known that the car wasn't local

Yeah because someone took down the registration number, went and looked it up & decided those people shouldn't be there so should be punished. Snitches indeed.

Amazing how North Norfolk is full of people who retired here from elsewhere in England, rely on pensions and local domicillary workers, and don't care about employment for the youth or all the other incomers like tourists who actually generate wealth for the area and sustain the economy that pays for the domicillary care...

I live 5 miles from Norfolk beach but don't dare drive there. I figure I'll get FPN if I actually drive over to the beach. NNUH was/is a multi-county surge centre, btw. It was planned that NNUH would take lots of out-of-area covid patients and the NNUH developed lots of extra capacity to take out-of-area covid patients from mid-Autumn onwards. They didn't take very many out-of-area patients in end -- but they were set up to take lots of extra. Not at all a situation of the "wee fragile rural hospitals can't handle any extra patients"

Stellaris22 · 25/02/2021 22:09

Problems arise when people are Day tripping then need serious help, like the case I mentioned earlier.

I have little concern with people travelling just to check on properties, especially considering the sub zero temperatures we had recently.

But if you're just visiting for a day out and then put coast guards and other people in danger, that's not ok.

BelgianTruffles · 25/02/2021 22:10

No hospitals have the infrastructure to cope. Hospitals in norfolk had more beds than hospitals in the south east and london, and patients from these areas were transferred to Hospitals in East Anglia.

Its not like if theres no beds in Norwich patients will be left to die, they will move them to beds outside the region as hospitals in other areas had to.

Every single A&E was rushed off their feet. The we dont have the infrastructure argument really frustrates me

People travel from London to work in East Anglia - people travel from all over to work in the area, as they do with every area. If someone is living in a second home its unlikely they are travelling to work and their risk is low, and Norfolk is incredibly sparce.

Its safer for everyone tbh if we space out. Its selfish to say 'we live in a sparce area and we are going to insist people stay in incredibly dense areas even though its safer for them to go elsewhere' Lets let cases run out of control in London, allowing more risk of mutations etc. Its better for the whole country if people space out.

BelgianTruffles · 25/02/2021 22:14

Also just to be clear I live in Norfolk and have worked in multiple hospitals in the region throughout the pandemic, so I am not coming at this from a position of second home owner travelling from the south east

The south east variant had already reached the region by the time it was identified

Loveletters123 · 25/02/2021 22:31

@ImFree2doasiwant we weren’t in lockdown when this happened and the person only travelled less than 20 miles. Bit different to people travelling from other counties in lockdown to go on holiday

ImFree2doasiwant · 25/02/2021 23:23

@Loveletters123 the windsurfer? Yes I know, my point was, that cars left unattended by the beach, especially at quiet times, or in lockdown, can be cause for concern. I was replying to a PPs comment.

Davros · 25/02/2021 23:34

But you're not allowed to stay overnight. We bought a house in North Norfolk last October and have only visited twice for a few nights each time. We would love to go there but it's not allowed

Lancrelady80 · 25/02/2021 23:57

Plagueridden....you will note my post said "potentially infected." The whole point of "stay at home" is based on people being potentially infected and spreading it. More densely populated areas = more likelihood of being infected.

I wasn't talking about the NNUH but when they have to beg, borrow and steal staff from another hospital then things are indeed dire in both of them. And I most certainly would not consider the NNUH small or fragile.

Husband knows because he's worked the same round 20 years. Faces are known, people chat to him and vice versa, cars are recognised. Believe me, posties know their rounds and their customers. Doesn't seem to be a more gossipy group than a bunch of posties in the sorting office, by the sound of it!

Lancrelady80 · 26/02/2021 00:32

Basing yourself there for at least a few weeks is fine, but coming and going isn't

Totally agree with this btw.

CKBJ · 26/02/2021 06:43

So the Cambridge’s are currently in their “second” home and have been based there. One can only assume they’ll be heading back to Kensington for schools to reopen 8th March! The message hasn’t changed yet stay at home!

Anna12345678910 · 26/02/2021 08:13
@WithMyOldCockLinnet a 4hr walk isn't the issue. Would you drive from London to the Norfolk Coast for a walk?

They drove over 100 miles, parked up next to the sea in conditions the coastguard described as the worst he had ever seen and went for a wander. There were 20ft waves.
This.

Also go back and forward to homes potentially spreading during a lockdown isn't really a great idea is it.

The fines were only £200 so if they own a second home not a great deal of money in the scheme of things anyway. I suppose it is like any other fine - parking on a double yellow, speeding, etc you know you shouldn't but do it anyway so pay up.

WithMyOldCockLinnet · 26/02/2021 08:50

Well of course they shouldn’t have been there in the first place.

But given that it was still daylight, it is an area where people sit for hours birdwatching or go for long walks, I am surprised at an emergency response - unless there were other indications that something was wrong. Like her clothes and a towel in the car, or some signs of distress. Or waves breaking over the car and the tide coming up around it. (Haha good luck if you leave your car on Blakeney quay and go for a long walk when there is a spring tide - the only response will be laughter)

I have close family in the area and in non-lockdown times often leave my London registered car in a fairly remote spot and go for a long walk, (along paths well away from waves and crumbling cliff edges) even in terrible conditions.

People have no business breaking lockdown and taking any risks though. Like those camping idiots in the Lakes where the rescuer was so badly hurt)

ginghamstarfish · 26/02/2021 09:08

Good, the fines should be higher in my opinion. I bet there is an unusual amount of 'essential maintenance' on second homes these days. As for those putting rescue services at risk too, then why not the £10k fine? There was a recent mountain rescue for some twats who thought they could do what they liked, needed to be rescued by the VOLUNTEER mountain rescue team, one of whom is now in a wheelchair after sustaining life-changing injury. Imagine putting your own life at risk to save such selfish morons.

Dowser · 26/02/2021 18:34

Lovely carnival atmosphere in the air today.
People really are so upbeat.
Loads down the beach and the prom too, and the queues for the fish and chips shops, I ecream, the pizza van and the coffee and waffle van..great to see their trade is doing well..as they’ve been manning their vans in all weathers.
Traffic coming home was mental.
It was like a whisper had gone round that there was a free fireworks do at the beach and everyone was determined to be there 😂😂😂

Dowser · 01/03/2021 11:29

So glad we visited our second home at the weekend.
There was a problem which we nipped in the bud and probably saved ourselves a fortune as it would only have worsened.

ExcusesAndAccusations · 01/03/2021 11:35

Day trip to the beach if you live an hour or so away will probably be legal from 29th March. Overnight stays in second homes or holiday cottages will probably be legal from 12 April.

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 01/03/2021 11:38

Norfolk police were busy at Sea Palling, apparently!
