Why havent they prioritised frontline workers over 60 year olds getting the vaccination?

tumpymummy · 24/02/2021 16:43

I totally understand that those with underlying health issues and the elderly needed to be vaccinated first. But what I dont understand is why over 60s are now being vaccinated and frontline workers are not? In less than 2 weeks time all children return to school. Nothing has changed in schools since September, and myself and colleagues will spend our days in small classrooms with 32 children just waiting for the infection and circles of self isolating bubbles to start again. Yet lots of my friends in their early 60s have now been vaccinated. They do not have health issues, a lot of them arent even working. Most of them spend all day at home, not really seeing anyone. Yet frontline workers have spent the last year working, risking their health, for no benefit whatsoever. Angry

The bloody stats they wheel out to support the theory that teachers are no more at risk than others, get right on my nerves. All averages “between March and October 2020”. The schools were closed to the vast majority of pupils! It’s all a huge lie.

I’m not even a teacher.

HopelesslyOptimistic · 24/02/2021 22:57

I have read so so many threads from teachers moaning & groaning....... very little noise from all those frontline occupations (police, shop workers, bus drivers) who have continued front line working, in contact with way over 30 little people per day. Complaints about the increase numbers of children at school during this lockdown, compared with the last is such a bore. Teachers need to turbo charge their professional approach like other key/frontline workers. As a full-time frontline working mother, juggling home schooling & privileged to have a supportive partner, I would love to see teacher professional inset days sacrificed & redirected to single parents & children in most need. Step up, you will get your vaccination when it's your turn.

? What. INSET days are a week of training days that were taken out of a teachers holiday by Baker when he was education secretary. Why do single parents need training days??

Yes but plenty of people with no PPE or social distancing under the age of 60 were working throughout that time. That is the point!
Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 25/02/2021 00:02

Love this my 54 year old husband. Who has worked throughout the how pandemic. Can't wear PPE in his job and often can't social distance. Is supposed to have his jab delayed for a 30 year old health person.

Totally pigging nuts. Yes keyworkers need to have their jabs quickly but not before the priority list. Else you will kill more people. Yes they should be working through a list of keyworkers for any spares. It actually sounds like a lot of hubs are doing that now anyway.

Also the moment we make it about jobs we will then risk slowly down everything. A whole process of making sure only those that are eligible book. It is just a lot faster to do this by age.

VaVaGloom · 25/02/2021 00:10

@TheKeatingFive

There are still lots of people working in their 60s but there are also lots like my PIL that are retired and sitting safely at home who won't encounter as much risk as school staff.

For the millionth time, the point is not catching it, but needing hospitalisation if you do.

Or as I said in my next post:

The risk of a secondary school teacher sitting in a small room with 150 different children each day without masks is far higher. They might not die but they are far less able to contribute and teach remotely if they get a serious case of Covid. Since March last year DC2 has only been taught in school Sept-Dec, I'd really like to keep their teacher safe, well and able to teach

I wish I was being prioritised yes.
I am close but no cigar.
Am 50 this year.
Was 'borderline' type 2 diabetes on last diabetes fasting test.
Was told I had a vitamin D deficiency on last blood test.
Was told I was 'borderline' high blood pressure on last 24 hour blood pressure monitoring test.
Was given a blue inhaler for asthma following allergy trigger attacks.
Single parent with two dependants and no support bubble.
I am also a size 20, not sure of the bmi.
I supervise bubbles and when they are open again fully do supply.
I was asked if I wanted to do covid swapping for 8 pounds an hour this week.
I asked if this meant I could be vaccinated earlier - nope.
Asked gov.uk for an antibody test - only Scotland is testing teachers not England.
I know I have covered for colleagues who were positive and had one of my bubbles sent home. Have taught across all year groups pre lockdown. I have a mask and hand san. Seen positives go into double figures. Am swabbed weekly.
It would be nice to not feel like it's a game of Russian Roulette. You look at someone like Derek Draper - and I know he was unlucky - he is only three years older than me.
Anyone know if you can report to the GP and expound on your obesity?! Also is there anywhere you can register to go on a list if any vaccines are to be thrown at the end of a given day?
Thanks in advance Flowers

Op, my DD works in a manufacturing plant with approx 2,500 people. They have had several outbreaks. Why is your need greater than hers?

You need to weigh yourself to calculate bmi? Then if it is over 40 you can ask to be weighed abs have that clinically Recorded for grouping (and other ) purposes

@gottakeeponmovin

Another thread where teachers think they are more important than anyone else working with the public
That's just not true. Why would you lie? Do you hate teachers so much that you need to make things up to encourage others to feel the same?

Are you quite well? It seems not.

justgivejack · 25/02/2021 07:25

I agree, in my area I know of a 45 year old, no underlying issues and not vulnerable, who has been offered the vaccine by GP. It doesn't make sense

VaVaGloom · 25/02/2021 08:18

@hellsbells99 Op, my DD works in a manufacturing plant with approx 2,500 people. They have had several outbreaks. Why is your need greater than hers?

Because education is supposedly being prioritised? As I said above one of my DC has only been allowed to attend school for 3months out out of the past 11. Schools (ergo teachers) need to be able to function so that children in the UK get an education. That makes teachers pretty important!

At the manufacturing plant your dd works at her employers are responsible for staff welfare and can improve procedures to allow distancing/ mask wearing /hand sanitiser and rotas. Schools don’t have distancing or rotas and primary don’t have masks.

I think we should be trusting that gps are exercising clinical judgment. Maybe the person doesn’t want to reveal to the world at large all their ins and outs ?!
Stillgoings · 25/02/2021 08:22

We just need to go down in age order. There is still a risk of death to over 45s.
There are many of us in that group out working with the public every day. My job never comes up in these threads but I'm out doing it every day and seeing people face to face every day.
I know teachers are worried about going back, it's totally understandable but I think if all teachers get fast tracked for the vaccine it's going to mean other people who.need it are pushed to the back of the queue, which is not good when the virus could.be on the upsurge when our teenagers go back.

TiddleTaddleTat · 25/02/2021 08:22

The problem as far as I can see are
a) teachers are despised by this government and have been thrown to the dogs by not being prioritised as frontline workers

b) morbidity as well as mortality should have been taken into account when prioritising vaccines. Many people are still unwell with long covid after becoming ill in the first wave in March 2020. Hundreds of thousands of previously healthy reasonably young economically productive people. This is going to be an enormous public health burden that the government has not even begun to acknowledge.

Wingingit15 · 25/02/2021 08:23

Schools haven’t been shut to protect teachers. They’ve been shut to reduce community transmission. Schools are not even closed !

Anna12345678910 · 25/02/2021 08:26

They HAVE prioritised Front Line Workers - all my local trust NHS and care home staff have been done!

hellsbells99 · 25/02/2021 08:26

VaVaGloom how much social distancing can be done in a manufacturing plant housing 2,500 people. They just go to work as normal and wear masks and hand sanitise. That’s it really. They don’t have rotas as the place already functions 24/7 with shifts. The economy has to continue

Anna12345678910 · 25/02/2021 08:27

Teacher have not been 'thrown to the dogs'.... more emotive language. I mean seriously stop with it.

TheKeatingFive · 25/02/2021 08:30

Where is the evidence that hundred of thousands of healthy young people have been rendered economically inactive?

Waits with interest.

I know ..... on and on and on and on and on - too much time on their hands as seen by the number of threads and comments from some. Perhaps the police/etc etc are too busy? Yes we all get it now teachers are the worst hit in the world, they die in the highest numbers, have been thrown under the bus multiple times and work far harder than anyone has ever done in any other job.

All CEV teachers should have had their first vaccination now. Teachers that are also carers and CV can book and get it now.

SilverGlitterBaubles · 25/02/2021 08:37

I don't get why teachers feel that they are the only ones that feel frightened by going to work. All of us who have had no choice but to work feel like this. I have continued to go to my work throughout the pandemic as has DH other than a period during the first lockdown. Our employers believe hand sanitiser and a small plastic screen in an busy office makes it 'Covid Safe' can prevent an airborne virus spreading. We have no choice, people rely on us and it's sink or swim for businesses and people's jobs are on the line. I have family in the police who have to deal with people coughing and spitting deliberately at them. DD works on a supermarket where there have been several outbreaks among staff with some having to be hospitalised.

GrumpyHoonMain · 25/02/2021 08:42

If they prioritised anyone it should be people who can’t work from home - binmen, postmen, delivery drivers. Teachers can work from home and shouldn’t be anywhere near the front of the queue.

Have you missed the news? Schools have been open throughout for key workers and vulnerable children. And all children will be back in little over a week.
NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 25/02/2021 08:48

I’m a supermarket worker and I’m just happy that my older and vulnerable colleagues are getting vaccinated.

I’m 30 with a healthy BMI and no underlying conditions. I’m absolutely not afraid of catching Covid and statistically incredibly unlikely to have a bad outcome. I am however very frightened of accidentally infecting a colleague who would be much more likely to become poorly.

I’m more than happy to wait at the bottom of the pile for vaccines but this sniping has got to stop. However they did it there would be people who felt it was unfair. Unless they could collectively jab everyone on one day there would be people who felt maligned.
