Eligible to book on NHS vaccine website - vaccinators say queue jumper

My dad is 63 and had his vaccine today by booking the appointment via the NHS booking link. As of yesterday over 60s became eligible. However, the vaccinators at his appointment were not impressed and said he should not have booked as he is not over 65 and he should have waited for a letter. They said he has queue jumped. Is this right? That if it allows you to book, you shouldn't unless you receive a letter?

@zen1

I am a carer in my 40s and I booked yesterday. I did not know my NHS number but the site let me book anyway. The site also has no proof I’m a carer.
Are you claiming Carers Allowance, that would give you eligibility to book on the system. I believe the files from DWP have now been uploaded so anyone registered with them can book
zen1 · 24/02/2021 12:42

Yes, I do get Carers allowance. Would the system know that from my name and DOB?

ACovidofWitches · 24/02/2021 12:43

I can imagine he felt utterly shit, to be honest. I'm so sorry. We need people to get vaccinated and he clearly didn't game the system in any way. I'm glad they at least did jab him.

Lansonmaid · 24/02/2021 12:44

I am a bit worried about being considered a queue jumper, I’m 62 and I appear to be able to book at a vaccination hub near me. The front page says you should wait to hear from the NHS if you don’t fit in one of the groups but one of my friends reckons 60-64s are being called forward in Cornwall. Should I book or not?

islockdownoveryet · 24/02/2021 12:45

@gisbons

He’s right, they’re wrong. And really rude!
This I’m a bit shocked and surprised by their comment of all people surely the more people get the vaccine the better . Your dad was being proactive.
RueRue · 24/02/2021 12:46

Ive been for my vaccination (eligible for work) and i was questioned by vaccinators about exactly what my role was etc (despite having letter confirming ny eligibility and having booked an appointment) as they said they've had lots of people book who werent eligible!

nitsandwormsdodger · 24/02/2021 12:48

I am 45 no medical dire need
Friend 35 also not EmV
Both got text and booked jabs

Another triumph of government IT by the sounds of things.
RevolutionRadio · 24/02/2021 12:49

I was eligible through work, I took a letter confirming this and work ID with me but no one asked to see any of it.

RhubarbCrumbling · 24/02/2021 12:49

How do people book as a carer on the national system if so not receive Carter’s allowance? Asking for a relative in this situation. They do not claim the money but get a Carter’s flu jab.

I don’t think you can, I think you have to go through the GP surgery and make sure they have note of your carer status so as to be called to local vaccination.

Hi I booked as a carer, don't receive carers allowance but have proof of dla received for my children. Not sure if this helps in your case @RhubarbCrumbling

Boulshired · 24/02/2021 12:54

My booking email says all I need is a mask and reference number, how do they know who has been sent a letter. How much detail do the vaccinators have.

Oh that means DSis and DH can book direct then. This is becoming headspinning. When did you show DLA proof?
TravellingSpoon · 24/02/2021 12:57

Thank you for this OP, I have booked my Dad on who is 64 and who works in supermarket with various health conditions, but none that means he need to shield. He has been worrying me since March so the fact I can book himin for Saturday makes me really happy.

MaudesMum · 24/02/2021 13:03

@PowerslidePanda Will you be turning 60 this year? Someone on another thread was suggesting that they calculate your age based on your year of birth only - if true then anyone born in 1961 would now be eligible. Yep - in March - I heard elsewhere that the cut off date was 31 March. Either way - d.o.b. and NHS number were enough for me to book an appointment. I've also just looked on facebook and my local surgery are starting to book in 60+, but also advising people that other vaccination centres (such as the one I've booked into) are also available.

99victoria · 24/02/2021 13:06

I just booked my husband in through the website - he's 61. I'm 60 in April and it wouldn't let me book for myself

ListeningQuietly · 24/02/2021 13:10

DH got his text from the GP and has booked.
Under 60. No ill. Not a carer.
I've not had mine yet.
If the GP texts you, book and go.

Yorkshirepudding1987 · 24/02/2021 13:12

I had the same on Sunday. I was added to the shielded patient list last Thursday (incorrectly it now turns out but I didnt know this on Sunday morning) and was told to book a vaccination appointment. I did using my NHS number.

When I got there the vaccination police (man with a tablet) said he didnt think I should be there because I looked too young. I said I'd been told I was now vulnerable and had been allowed to book. He made me show my shielding letter, even though he had confirmed my booking and said "I'll let you in but I don't think you should"

Was chatting to the vaccinatior and she apologised for him, said they had got it in their heads outside that it was over 65s only and that I should've taken the vaccine as I'd been invited.

Looks like some of these volunteers are deciding they are gatekeeper.

Boulshired · 24/02/2021 13:16

I think the GPs covering group 6 has failed and is leaving voids in the system. I know some CV who are borderline CEV not called and as a carer I can book straight away in the same grouping where there are loads of empty slots. It was too big of an ask for GPs.

That's different, there have been many reported cases of people lying to get vaccines via the various non NHS links that have been circulating. You can't book via the NHS one until you are eligible
Ch3rish · 24/02/2021 13:23

Another triumph of government IT by the sounds of things

You can blame the government for many things @RickiTarr but they aren't responsible for all the people who deliberately lie to book slots, that's why they are meant to check the ID of certain groups when they turn up

Jaxhog · 24/02/2021 13:27

If you can book - book! Everyone has to book some time.

Greyhair59 · 24/02/2021 13:29

I think it depends on where you live. Am 60 and got invitation through gp. Had 1st jab. In greater london.

ajandjjmum · 24/02/2021 13:32

I had been trying to book DH in every morning for a couple of weeks, but it's come up as not eligible. Fair enough.

I tried just before going to bed on Monday night, and the system allowed me to book him in for first thing on Tuesday morning.

Several friends in the 60-64 age group have also booked or had their first jab, using the same NHS system.

If they didn't want you to go, they wouldn't have opened it up. Every jab is one closer to beating shitty Covid!
