Lots of young(ish) people having vaccines

DK123 · 23/02/2021 22:49

I've noticed a lot of people in my age group (30s) posting pictures of their vaccination cards on SM.

I'm not sure why so many younger people have been vaccinated already, does anyone know why it might be? (I don't like to ask) It's impossible that they are all ECV, there are too many of them to all be and the criteria for getting the vaccine for that reason aren't that wide. I'm certain that none of the people I'm talking about have any sort of care or clinical jobs. I know people who work in hospitals etc who've had it but I'm not referring to them. I'm not sure if some people could have paid to get it - I don't know if that's even possible.

I just wondered if anyone else had noticed this and if anyone knows why?

NHS and social care are sharing links giving people access to the big vaccination centres

I've been offered it loads and know loads who've done it (i haven't - don't agree with it)

No one at the big centres are checking and the link isn't to the normal site - it's a specific link given to employers based on eligibility e.g social care who work with vulnerable who then share with family

i know more who've queue jumped than who haven't

allsayingthesamething · 23/02/2021 23:49

This is why no one outside my family knows I've had the vaccine.

Because no one knows I have a medical condition.

I think these threads are most unhelpful.

CaptainCarp · 23/02/2021 23:50

@battyberyl

My relative is in a care home ,early 60's with an illness classing him as cev and yet still not had the vaccine.
Something seems wrong there. They should have been in group 4 as a minimum?

Is it possible for your relative to book online? Is it an issue with getting to the vaccination centre.

Very sensible. I wouldn’t tell people about medical procedures like vaccinations anyway normally, but this in particular seems to be licence to quiz people on their medical history and personal circumstances, or speculate on whether they are “queue jumpers”. All very unpleasant
Jackie2022 · 24/02/2021 00:02

Maybe they were offered the vaccine simply because it was their turn in the queue? There doesn’t have to be a conspiracy behind it.

Remember that there’s people 12-20 years younger than you that haven’t been contacted at all. I’m early 20s and no one I know has been vaccinated aside from NHS staff. Relatively healthy people who are 30-40 starting to get vaccinated en masse now makes sense if the public is being vaccinated in turn

Haffiana · 24/02/2021 00:06

This is the latest covid curtain twitching, isn't it?

Shrivelled · 24/02/2021 00:13

I also won’t be jumping on social media telling everyone when I get the vaccine. It’s such an emotive topic, it invites judgement and scrutiny.

MatildaStoker · 24/02/2021 00:14

They’ve started vaccinating people in group 6 now.
The criteria for moderately vulnerable people in group 6 is much wider than the criteria for CEV in group 4. Unpaid carers are also included in group 6.
IIRC there’s something like 7.3 million people in group 6, many of them will be younger adults, and they’re not necessarily going to have been sharing all their relevant medical history with all their friends.

Out of the people I know in their 40’s and younger who’ve recently been invited for a vaccine, there’s only 1 who says he’s not sure why. (And he volunteered that information, I didn’t ask!)
The others have clinical conditions that qualify, such as diabetes or coeliac.

BlueSoop · 24/02/2021 00:17

People can’t pay for the vaccine and can’t jump the queue. If they’ve been vaccinated it’s because they’ve been offered it, either because of their job or because of health issues. My DH looks really healthy and fit, he runs marathons, but he’s being vaccinated this week because he has an autoimmune disease. He looks really healthy but any sort of bug makes him very ill because his immune system isn’t great. It’s not something he announces to people though.

obstinatrix · 24/02/2021 00:17

I had mine today (I'm 33) because I have an autoimmune disease. I get a free flu jab every year for this as well. So does my partner who has asthma and their jab is next week.

battyberyl · 24/02/2021 00:18

@CaptainCarp,we have queried it and told they will be getting it in the next few days .Seems they didn't get done as not a care home for "older adults"

SleepingStandingUp · 24/02/2021 00:19

Me: carer for son
Friends: psychotherapist, carers for their children, carer in care home, nurse, doctor, hospital dietician, CEV, heart condition, works with homeless, works with drug addicts, diabetes,

CaptainCarp · 24/02/2021 00:59

@battyberyl That's good to hear. When I was looking at the guidance I wasn't sure what "older adults" included so erred on the side of CEV group 4.
I wish there was some way to see what % of each group local councils / Boroughs had got through.

BritWifeinUSA · 24/02/2021 01:03

You’d be surprised at the list of medical conditions that put people in group 6. Looking through the list, it just be half the country. I was most surprised to see that I would be in group 6 if I lived in the UK as a stroke survivor (25 years ago) and having epilepsy. What they both have to do with a respiratory virus I really don’t know. I don’t even bother with a flu shot.

turnitonagain · 24/02/2021 01:07

Odd that someone would be very private about a health condition but then post their vaccination record on SM.

JaywickCaravanOfLust · 24/02/2021 01:11

Well if nothing else this proves that it was always impossible for "the vulnerable" to "stay at home".

My friend explained why it was included as I mentioned I didn't realise it was included in the vulnerable category. They told me that if they were unconscious or ventilated they wouldn't be able to take their epilepsy medication. Then this could lead to a fit that a) brings its own complications & b) be worse than "normal" due to being off the medication which for them lessens the fits severity as well as frequency.
TulipCat · 24/02/2021 04:01

I live near one of the big London hospitals. If you go along at the end of the day, you can under certain circumstances be given one of the leftover vaccines from a batch if there have been no-shows. Maybe they did that? I think that's only available for the one that has to be stored at the very low temperature and therefore has a very short shelf life though.

MaverickDanger · 24/02/2021 04:32

There’s two that I’ve raised an eyebrow at, both in their 20s.

One must have a health condition but it can’t be serious enough to stop him having house parties throughout lockdowns.

The other has had it due to her being morbidly obese - she has accepted that she is obese now to have the jab, but couldn’t accept it a few months ago when she attempted to sue the NHS for referring to her as obese and having a high BMI when pregnant Grin

MaverickDanger · 24/02/2021 04:34

And another friend has had it as a registered nurse, even though she is in maternity leave & has now handed in her notice after having her first dose & already has her second booked in.

She’s admitted to waiting till she had hers booked before quitting. Just seems a bit weird.

I've had it (legitimately) this way and they absolutely did check ID. I needed to show my work pass, plus personal ID and the letter advising me of the link. I think there were some issues with this initially, but not now. If I'd shared the link, I think someone could have booked an appointment but I don't think they'd have got through the checks on the door.
yearinyearout · 24/02/2021 07:46

It's happening round here too. I have half a dozen friends all under the same surgery as me, who've had their appointment come through but they have no idea why (as in they have no health issues) all of them are men 45-50.

What is frustrating is that I know other people WITH health issues that haven't had theirs. I'm assuming a glitch in the system?

MrsJohnLuther · 24/02/2021 07:54

Group 6 includes 'hidden' health conditions eg lupus, rheumatoid arthritis etc. I have RA, many acquaintances wouldn't have a clue re the implications of having an autoimmune disorder or the fact the medication is immunosuppressive.

Or you know half a dozen men who don't want to tell you what their health condition is.

They've offered everyone a vaccine who works or lives in a care home i thought?
