For once, I actually agree with Boris

We cannot persist indefinitely with restrictions that have separated families and loved ones for too long, and threatened the livelihoods of millions, and kept pupils out of school.

Finally some sense. So glad this is the message from the government now.

How can anyone know what Labour would have done vaccination wise?

Dolciedolly · 24/02/2021 06:36

@Dongdingdong

Me or you wouldn't have ended up in ICU

Plenty of people end up in ICU (unfortunately for them) if they’ve got Covid badly enough Confused

The government has undoubtedly made mistakes, but the vaccine rollout has been a huge success and the roadmap sounds sensible.

You can't say things like on a page full of labour supporters 😂 I agree with you though

A rather patronizing view, is it not?

@Oblomov21 I don’t think the public will let Boris forget his disastrous year, no matter how much he tries to cover himself in glory. There is a lot of suppressed anger out there: and when people realise how bad it is with unemployment, destroyed business, people losing their homes from being forced not to work, and their children’s mental health, the public red mist will descend. The worst of this probably won’t come to light until after the euphoria of “freedom” had worn off, and Boris will most likely have quietly shuffled off into the sunset by then.

It’s unlikely Boris will be leading the Tories into the next election. He looks completely knackered and the days of him being electoral gold dust are well behind him; he’s more of a liability than an asset.

I think all current polling is quite soft, electorally no one has faced something like this before, so I have no idea how it will play out.

The Tories appear to be very worried about Scotland, that is going to be very interesting to watch that as it is a real clash of covid strategies (personally I prefer Sturgeon's, I'm interested to compare England and Scotland in April/May).

@vera99

I won't call him Boris out of an inbuilt loathing of the man but in this instance I agree with Johnston.
This made my day 😹

I actually think Labour would have done better even under corbyn (and I really disliked him) as they would have used the public sector more. And as shown by the efficiency of the vaccine roll out by the NHS and local authorities - once the public sector are involved - the ones that are trained and primed to deal with this stuff - things have gone well.
The tories just enabled a get rich quick scheme for their freinds at the start and Cummings lost the good will of alot of the country to abide by self isolation and track and trace.
Corbyn etc would have had us in lockdown sooner too - probably too soon for alot of people's liking tbh!

Stripyhoglets1 · 24/02/2021 14:44

Labour would have enabled people to self isolate on full pay too. People would be grumbling like mad if Labour had introduced the furlough scheme as a mad waste of tax payers money. The fact the Tories have even done this, and basically paid some of some people's wages for a whole year way above benefits rates, goes to show how serious this would have been if we'd just been left to get in with things.
They have HATED doing this. Remember the rhetoric last summer about people becoming reliant on furlough - the push to open things up quickly and get the economy going - moaning public sector workers were still all wfh - which ultimately led to the massive second wave of illness and deaths. Labour would be much more comfortable with the state paying for people to stay safe in times of International pandemic.

If it makes you feel better to believe that then sure.
