I don't want to go to work and potentially come into contact with 30+ people!

I don't want to go into work and put myself and family at risk. I'm expected to come into contact with at least 30 people a day- different people each day at that. I've done it 5 days a week for the last year whilst my children have continued to go to school and be given worksheets they often find too easy/hard because no differentiation, supervised by a TA.

I work in a supermarket. Part of my job is stacking shelves whilst every man and his family of four have come to my supermarket for a jolly and lean over me to pick up their packet of digestives. Most of them wear masks but a lot have their noses hanging out.

I don't have a union - can I join NEU please?

(And before someone says I'm teacher bashing- I'm not. I'm a teacher in my 30's who would very much like my mostly female in their late 40s/early 50's colleagues who hate their jobs to stop---- scaremongering.)

Let's get back to school!

Lucky you being in your 30s. Your colleagues and parents at home probably wouldn't be worried if they were too. 99% of death are over 50s.

CayrolBaaaskin · 22/02/2021 10:26

I agree. It’s disgraceful the fuss some teachers have been making about going back to work when others have been working throughout the pandemic in public facing roles. Thankfully the teachers at dds school are back and they are back to school.

toolatetooearly · 22/02/2021 10:27

Why are you teaching in a supermarket? Doesn't seem very safe.

CallforHecate · 22/02/2021 10:27

Absolute gibberish.

Radio4Rocks · 22/02/2021 10:28

Goady fuckers are up early today.

Pointless post of the day award.

HopelessBlue192 · 22/02/2021 10:35

Well then don't go OP ?!

Some of us would give our right arm for our businesses to be open and to be working again.

I have two part-time jobs, one in a shop, the other in a school.

Due to the shop I work in, I qualified for a vaccine. My employers were hot on masks, sanitizing and washing hands for 60 secs right from the start. We're even allowed to ask customers to keep 2m away from us even with both wearing masks. Masks are worn all the time behind the scenes except for drinking or eating. We have sanitizer, disinfectant wipes everywhere for our use as much as we want and all the touch points are cleaned four times daily. It's as safe as it can be.

My second job in a school involves work with 200 children in a hall. We've chosen to wear masks all the time ourselves and nothing has been said - luckily all the children are able to understand us. School is cleaned (not deep cleaned) at the end of the day. We do have disinfectant but there's only the time for a brief clean of surfaces which we'd normally do anyway. I've had a lovely little group during lockdown but believe me I'll have a wobble when they're all back as it doesn't feel safe, this is despite having the benefit of the vaccine through my other job.

Really hoping though that all essential face to face contact workers will get vaccinated earlier to reflect the every day risk they have to take.

Don’t worry, you will be ok. I believe teacher is more protected than many other jobs. If you really don’t want, probably you can discuss with headteacher if he can allow you to work remotely or offer temporary leave until you get first jab? Some of my children‘s school teachers worked remotely during the last term because of underlying health condition.
Personally I believe children’s education is one of the most important thing in the society, so I respect PM’s decision to open all schools in two weeks.

@SilverGlitterBaubles

I agree OP, imagine if all those who have no choice but to carry on going to work over the last 12 months kicked up the same fuss. The country would literally have ground to a halt. I imagine that police, shop workers, bus drivers, factory workers also feel very unsafe but carry on. DH and I both work office environment where other than the 1st lockdown where we WFH, things are pretty much normal and the presence of hand sanitiser and a few signs apparently makes us Covid safe.
Im a teacher and I’m sure this didn’t pass you by, but the government literally closed my place of work to me last March, allowed me back in in September, then closed it to me again in January. I couldn’t go to my workplace even if I bloody well wanted to!! Apart from those supervising and teaching key worker and vulnerable kids, we were forced to work from home when schools were closed.

You had no choice but to go to work (and I know that must have been stressful and I do sympathise!), we had no choice but to stay home. Only difference is that we get bashed for something we had literally no control over.

So I don’t understand the “kicking up a fuss” comment as

  1. I was literally not allowed to go to my workplace
  2. as soon as I could, I did regardless of whether I felt safe or not, because it is my job
  3. apparently asking for safety measures to protect my students and the staff so schools can stay consistently open is always read as wanting schools closed forever even though none of the words are even vaguely similar.
mumsneedwine · 22/02/2021 12:06

Well schools will be shutting again soon then. We've had a bubble burst this morning and one KW pod and 3 staff sent home for 10 days. Here we go again, the in/out game. Why are schools crowded ? Because we only have a limited amount of space and 2,000 students. If you think your kids schools don't look like that photo you are deluded (or gone private).

Oh whoops. Sorry, teachers are much more likely to get COVID. What can possibly go wrong now.

I don't want to go to work and potentially come into contact with 30+ people!
marieantoinehairnet · 22/02/2021 13:47

I don't fancy getting on the Circle line with a couple of thousand other germ ridden individuals and their exponential contacts x a zillion, but it's gonna happen!

mumsneedwine · 22/02/2021 13:49

@marieantoinehairnet really ? Last time I caught the tube at rush hour it was empty. Weird as they did a swab test of the tube last week and found very little virus at all. Seems ventilation works ! Don't see transport workers high up the ONS list ?

I have seen some shockingly full trains and tubes out of London, they're testing the same line and so they'll have chosen wisely...
