I don't want to go to work and potentially come into contact with 30+ people!

I don't want to go into work and put myself and family at risk. I'm expected to come into contact with at least 30 people a day- different people each day at that. I've done it 5 days a week for the last year whilst my children have continued to go to school and be given worksheets they often find too easy/hard because no differentiation, supervised by a TA.

I work in a supermarket. Part of my job is stacking shelves whilst every man and his family of four have come to my supermarket for a jolly and lean over me to pick up their packet of digestives. Most of them wear masks but a lot have their noses hanging out.

I don't have a union - can I join NEU please?

(And before someone says I'm teacher bashing- I'm not. I'm a teacher in my 30's who would very much like my mostly female in their late 40s/early 50's colleagues who hate their jobs to stop---- scaremongering.)

Let's get back to school!

Wow I thought the OP was clear. Come on mumsnetters you can do better than that! Grin

musicalfrog · 22/02/2021 07:49

Although it is early tbf.

HalzTangz · 22/02/2021 07:49

To be fare I have hardly heard any retailer complain about having to work, I have however heard of loads of teachers complaining

Stickytreacle · 22/02/2021 07:49

How bloody patronising and insensitive of you op. My daughter is an HLTA, she has recovered from blood cancer and is now expected in class with no vaccination and no ppe while coming home to vulnerable adults. Your attitude towards vulnerable colleagues and children is disgusting quite frankly.

beela · 22/02/2021 07:49

Eh? I'm glad op wasn't one of my teachers at school, they aren't very clear.

RandomGrammarPun · 22/02/2021 07:50

Well, supermarket staff come into contact with a hell of a lot more than 30 people a day, don't they? But almost all masked.

Secondary teachers and TAs - also more like 200 plus people a day for a hour at an hour and hundreds more in corridors. All unmasked in classrooms.

Both risky. Not sure the risk is the same, however.

3/10

SilverGlitterBaubles · 22/02/2021 07:50

I agree OP, imagine if all those who have no choice but to carry on going to work over the last 12 months kicked up the same fuss. The country would literally have ground to a halt. I imagine that police, shop workers, bus drivers, factory workers also feel very unsafe but carry on. DH and I both work office environment where other than the 1st lockdown where we WFH, things are pretty much normal and the presence of hand sanitiser and a few signs apparently makes us Covid safe.

CeeJay81 · 22/02/2021 07:52

I'm a supermarket worker too and yes it is putting us at risk. Not much we can do about that really. I'm confused are you a teacher or a supermarket worker? neu is the education union. I am a member of Usdaw which is the Union for shop workers.

mumsneedwine · 22/02/2021 08:12

Wow I never realised supermarkets looked like this except at Xmas, I'd speak to your boss if I was you.

  1. your OP is really unclear; I do hope you’re a PE teacher

  2. coming into contact with a lot of people for a few seconds each, in a large ventilated space, while you are wearing a mask, is considerably less risky than spending over an hour in an unventilated room with the same 30 people, when you are not allowed to wear a mask. The risk is exacerbated if the 30 people are from the age group who are likely to get covid without symptoms.

  3. of course there are unions for supermarket workers, don’t be silly

Not a PE teacher but if I were that's pretty rude. Are PE teachers beneath 'proper teachers'?

I thought it was funny! I'm thrilled this morning my two are going back

AlowYew · 22/02/2021 08:26

Eh...

I'm confused 🤷‍♀️

🙃

motherrunner · 22/02/2021 08:27

I really hope you’re not one of my colleagues.

I hope you are not a teacher at my DC’s school.

Lochmorlich · 22/02/2021 08:35

So glad my dc are adults and I don’t have to deal with this.

Children need to go to school.
Teachers need to be safe.
It’s a difficult problem.

Thunderpunt · 22/02/2021 08:40

I'm desperate to go back to work in a small room with 30 odd people.
But sadly this fucking government have made it illegal for me to open my restaurant and earn money to provide for my family.

Chill08 · 22/02/2021 08:42

I work in a nursery. Have had to carry on as normal since January with all children in. Not ideal, but needs must. I know why teachers are worried but there are so many other proffessions that put themselves at risk everyday that dont get heard.

Pyewackect · 22/02/2021 08:47

Eh...

I'm confused 🤷‍♀️

🙃

Me too 🤔
JellyBabiesSaveLives · 22/02/2021 08:48

@poblwcymru You’re being disingenuous. PE teachers don’t spend much time teaching writing skills.

mumsneedwine · 22/02/2021 08:48

Which other profession currently has working conditions like ? I'm just wondering

I don't want to go to work and potentially come into contact with 30+ people!
JellyBabiesSaveLives · 22/02/2021 08:50

@TwirpingBird apologies. I don’t really think the Op is any kind of teacher

It really isn't. I hope the OP isn't an English teacher.
SunshiningBetty · 22/02/2021 08:51

@DinosaurDiana

I am a Covid vaccination nurse. I personally come into very close contact with 50+ people per shift. Some of them only wear a face shield, some have their mask under their noses. I’m not worried. I think you need to consider if you are over anxious, and maybe have a chat with your manager about how you can do your job yet feel safe.
You will have been vaccinated though so pretty different to an unvaccinated teacher in a completely maskless classroom whilst being unmasked yourself Confused

Also at least a supermarket worker can wear a mask.

And I am not a teacher.
