Underlying health condition doesn’t qualify?

Ellietheant · 20/02/2021 19:12

Has anyone else on here had an underlying condition they expected to be vaxed for but told no??
My hubby has Congenital Heart Valve Disease which is monitored annually with scans and consultant meetings, he gets all the NHS flu/pneumatic jabs etc.

But when he wasn’t called up in this cohort I called his GP and they said he doesn’t qualify so will be called up by age.

We are really shocked, especially with the kids going back to school soon we’ve been holding onto this as a little extra protection for him.

Does anyone know if the GPs have any say in this? Ours said they’re sticking strictly to guidelines even though guidelines include Congenital Heart Disease. Does putting the word valve in there change this?

Anyone else had anything like this or trying to fight it??

They’ve always made a song and dance about his heart at every other opportunity so why now? And how can they say he has to have flu vax but not this which is a far worse disease. Just doesn’t add up??

@itsgettingwierd

I'm confused by the list too.

It has neurological conditions. Names MND, MS and Parkinson's. Has CP as separate names condition.

Ds condition is basically a combination of all these in a very basic layman's sense. But we aren't allowed to ring GP to see if they get the vaccine because of it.

They have to ring and offer it. He's also a flu jab candidate. He's 16.

I can’t believe how many people aren’t being called up and should be. Good luck, I hope he gets it soon Flowers
Notgoingouttoday · 20/02/2021 20:22

Why do people keep asking why they are not getting the vaccine? I wish people would just be patient and wait their turn. I was taken to hospital last week as a result of an ongoing heart problem, I have had two heart attacks and have a congenital heart valve problem. I have been voluntarily sheilding for a year. I assume I am in Group 6 but haven't yet had my invite for a jab. Please accept that the doctors are inviting people in order of priority based on the seriousness of their condition - why would you think you deserve the jab more than others?

Jaxhog · 20/02/2021 20:25

Be reassured by this. It means you are not as much at risk as others. If you're really worried, just be as careful as you can. Everyone will get vaxxed.

Piggywaspushed · 20/02/2021 20:26

A lot of this could be saved by GPs sending a quick text saying 'you are in Group six. We will send you another text when it is time to make your appointment.'

A lot of people haven’t been placed in the correct group.

My partners friend has CF, this puts him in priority group four, as his GP has been incompetent he still hasn’t had his vaccine. He hasn’t even had a group 6 invite, despite emails and calls his GP is yet to return any calls/emails.

SimonJT · 20/02/2021 20:27

I obviously mean incorrect group Blush

Lougle · 20/02/2021 20:41

It's a huge job. I should be in group 6 because I'm a carer. Despite getting the flu jab every year because I'm a carer, I haven't had my record flagged as a carer, so I haven't been put in group 6. They say they will call me back, but I'm sure I've just been added to a pile. It must be a nightmare to retrospectively apply criteria to records when that was never intended in the setup.

InMySpareTime · 20/02/2021 20:49

GPs sticking to the letter of the Green Book guidance are putting some of their patients at unnecessary risk.
I've seen on here people being put into Group 6 because they had gestational diabetes years ago (no current extra Covid risk), and others being refused Group 6 with several conditions that demonstrably place them at some extra risk but which all taken individually are not deemed enough for Group 6.
It's really not as simple as "if your GP doesn't say you're Group 6 you're lower risk".

agentnully · 20/02/2021 20:57

I have MS, fibro, asthma, Raynaud's and a few other conditions.

I was on the flu list until a few years ago but I disappeared off that when they called my partner in for them. He gets a letter every year, I have to ring and beg.

I refused treatment for my MS other than pain medications because I reacted so badly to them that my quality of life suffered badly. Because of this I'm labelled a difficult patient.

My partner is my full-time carer but younger than me so won't have it at the same time as me, assuming I have to wait for my age group. Because of my MS I've self-isolated for a year now and have only been as far as my back garden. My partner is pretty fed up as he only goes as far as the pharmacy or GP. We get our groceries delivered (though we're not on the shielding list so had to rely on what was in my cupboards for several weeks when this lot kicked off). We live in the middle of nowhere so have always stocked the cupboards and freezer in autumn as we get cut off quite often.

My partner doesn't claim Carer's Allowance so won't be on that list. I rang the GP and was told they couldn't tell me if we were on the list and to email Public Health Wales for information. I did so three weeks ago but have had nothing but their standard reply.

They couldn't tell me why I've been removed from the flu list either and to bring that up with PHW.

I'm 55 and my partner is 51.

Can anyone suggest something?

itsgettingwierd · 20/02/2021 21:00

Coco it doesn't surprise it isn't named as such (hereditary spastic paraplegia isn't well known and is quite rare) but it's the fact we aren't allowed to ring and ask if they can get on list or even if they are on it in the first place with a condition. I'm going to speak to his consultants about it and they may be able to arrange vaccine?

If he's classed as CV (which according to green book he is) he needs doing when he'll be expected back into college in a few weeks.

Piggywaspushed · 20/02/2021 21:01

MS id definitely group 6!

I've had this battle re flu jab and being ds carer.

Luckily he's 16 now so I'm officially his carer on his records.

But I've already had vaccine dose 1 though work!

I’m not sure if you actually read my post or just took the opportunity to jump on the title but this isn’t for ME. I’d happily wait my turn or give my jab to anyone I know. I actually couldn’t care less if I never get the bloody thing.

This is for my husband who has a heart condition which the BHF clearly state on their site puts him at higher risk of serious illness if he gets the virus.

Me coming on here asking this question to protect someone I love isn’t me ‘presuming he deserves the jab more than others’ it’s me trying to get him a little security so he doesn’t land up as just another ‘oh it’s fine then they just had underlying health conditions’ which unfortunately seems the norm now.

mollypuss1 · 20/02/2021 21:07

I’m wondering if it depends on the actual condition. My DH has Wolff Parkinson White which is a congenital heart condition but his GP said this does not put him in group 6. It does seem like it’s a bit of a postcode lottery based on a GP’s interpretation of the criteria.

Many people with underlying conditions don't have the option to shield as they have to go to work to pay bills. Perhaps in your privileged position you are unable to empathize with the fear this causes people who have significant risks for covid. If you read the OP you will see that heart conditions are supposed to be included in group 6 but this one hasn't been, and this appears to be against JCVI advice. GPs are making incorrect judgements without referring to the knowledge of consultants. It's perfectly reasonable for people to want to know when they will be protected from something that poses a very real danger to them as they are medically high risk, and your lack of understanding is callous. You should think long and hard about how you would feel if you were forced to stop shielding and exposed to the outside world every day without any sign of a vaccine for months. These aren't healthy people asking to jump the queue. These are people with serious conditions who were told they should be included in group 6 and then found their GPs did a complete U-turn on policy without explanation.

They aren’t though. My husband has 5 separate serious risk factors and is over 60. He hasn’t yet been called for vaccine in group 6 although he is confirmed eligible. A local friend has one of the same illnesses, but less severely than my husband, yet both he and his 54 year old wife have already been done. I have enquired and been told that there is no additional prioritising within the group, batches of names are being pulled at random.

AnxiousAlpaca · 20/02/2021 23:45

I have mitral valve prolapse. Probably developed when I was really young. Only spotted in my 20s and I’m now in my early 30s and get scanned every 5 years. Physiologically (in terms of my heart function) it’s absolutely normal. I rang my GP and I am in group 6.

Beaniecats · 21/02/2021 00:47

People with epilepsy, group 6 being told they don't qualify. They do
Putting GPs in charge of group 6 is an epic cock up

Beaniecats · 21/02/2021 00:48

Incidentally I have epilepsy and heard nothing

Northernsoulgirl45 · 21/02/2021 02:12

Our GPS have a big sign up saying not to ring them about COVID jabs .
I'm ECV dh got his letter on the day he was jabbed last week.
I have mild asthma and am obese but not quite morbidly so I have to wait I guess.
I

Dementedswan · 21/02/2021 02:51

My GPS have the same on their website. Don't know what people are supposed to do if they believe they have been put in the wrong group 🤷‍♀️

EmmaGrundyForPM · 21/02/2021 02:59

DH had a heart condition which was resolved via surgery a couple of years ago. He has been invited for his jab. A friend who is at the same surgery had his jab yesterday because he has (very mikd) asthma.

DS girlfriend (22) has asthma. She's in a completely different part of the country. She is having her jab next week.

MidSummersNightmare · 21/02/2021 07:40

My friend age 62 has been diagnosed with severe COPD by his GP and given medication. He should be in group 4 on this basis. However when he phoned to ask he was told as he’s been unable to have further tests at the hospital due to covid his diagnosis isn’t formal and therefore he will be vaccinated with his age group not even in group 6.

Beaniecats · 21/02/2021 07:40

I'm not expecting to hear

Samcartys · 21/02/2021 07:54

That sounds absolutely bonkers op.
I was born with a hole in the heart (like many babies are) but was discharged when I was 5. I’m 36 now and fit and healthy and I have been called for my covid jab next week.
