Schools in England should go back at Easter

I'm terrified that full return will result in increased transmissions. This will increase the chance of more mutations. Which increases the chance of a mutant that is resistant to the current vaccines.

Or just back with full wards, and yet another lockdown.

I loathe lockdown. I would give anything to wake up tomorrow and life be back to normal. But it's for this reason I think we should wait that extra bit longer. Get those rates right down and vaccines out, then have a return to school that won't result in another lockdown.....!

AIBU for thinking this? Am I wrong?

@WhenSheWasBad

We didn’t have a single bubble burst and my kids are already in small classrooms of only 15 kids so keeping them off doesn’t seem logical or fair. They need to go back to school

Bit of an “I’m alright Jack attitude”

Plus just because your schools is ok now. That’s no guarantee it will be ok later.

Well we have vaccines now so we are probably over the worst.

But right now, children aren’t vaccinated, most of their parents aren’t vaccinated and most of their teachers aren’t vaccinated. So I’m not buying the argument that we can open up in 2 weeks as normal and see no spread.

Far more sensible to wait until after Easter. That’s obviously not a no risk option, no such thing. But hopefully the numbers will be far lower by then.

SignsofSpring · 20/02/2021 11:55

Not everyone is getting vaccinated anyway, I think vaccines are only part of the solution. I don't expect vaccines to be offered below age 40 and even if they are, I'm pretty sure a lot of people won't want their children vaccinated at this stage (some might, many will not).

Vaccines should be there, like for flu, for the most vulnerable age groups, and privately for those that want it.

Everyone else can decide whether to limit their social interaction indefinitely (as we will not have a fully vaccinated population or even perhaps herd immunity) or to just take the risk as we were doing when we weren't in lockdown.

Timeturnerplease · 20/02/2021 11:56

The problem lies with your school then, if you are genuinely vulnerable they shouldn’t force you into that situation

State schools are directly (under)funded by the government. They get their sum of money and that’s it. Our supply budget ran out by October due to isolations and sickness. If we were to keep vulnerable teachers at home we wouldn’t be able to pay for a replacement teacher for that class.

zoemum2006 · 20/02/2021 12:10

100% agree. We’re in the routine now. It’s awful but Head down for a few more weeks for a greater chance of freedom in the future.

It’s worth it!

JonVanTam · 20/02/2021 12:26

If people are being asked to shield until 31st March, where does that leave shielding teachers, if schools go back in some way on 8th March?

Anyone know?!

Fembot123 · 20/02/2021 12:27
**@Flinstones* @Fembot123* our school had no bubbles popping until mid November. We were quite smug too. And then all hell broke lose and it was chaos. We now have 2 dead staff members, several off with long term health conditions, 5 have resigned as had enough, and students are fearful of going through that again. Be v careful what you wish for - once it gets in it can be horrific. Staggered return, or safety measures like every other place at the moment (masks, screens, some attempt at SD). Otherwise there will be many more schools going through what ours did before this is over.
How is it smug to state a fact?

Fembot123 · 20/02/2021 12:29

Also I’m assuming this catastrophe made the papers, 2 teachers dead and 5 more resigned! That’s bloody awful.

You’d think

I'm have to say I'm a bit Hmm at all these apparent deaths of young healthy school staff. I work in a factory, at last count 19 of us have had Covid, no one dead and everyone back at work after their isolation periods. And most of these are 50+ overweight men.
HauntedPencil · 20/02/2021 13:49

A lot of people are posting it's "three more weeks" to get freedom back - absolutely no guarantee of this at all.

We could get walloped with a new variant in September - therefore why not get some kids in when there's headroom?

mumsneedwine · 20/02/2021 14:08

Funnily enough I didn't put my school in.

Fembot123 · 20/02/2021 14:09

Are you in the uk?

Fembot123 · 20/02/2021 14:09

Yes funny.
Blue565 · 20/02/2021 14:30

It's always "just a bit longer" or "4 more weeks"

Nah I'm done

Newtonn · 20/02/2021 14:31

@Waxonwaxoff0 I'm have to say I'm a bit hmm at all these apparent deaths of young healthy school staff.

What a disgusting attitude. These are people who have lost their lives, and others who have lost their loved ones. They are categorically 'apparent' in that they are clearly documented and understood.

Whilst lots of school staff have such demographics that they don't make up the majority of deaths, the profession is more exposed than average workers and cases obviously can lead to deaths.

@Fembot123 Why on earth should anyone have to link to identifying information to make you accept an indisputable point?

Of course cases can obviously lead to deaths. I just don't buy some of the stuff I read by posters on here, that's all.

teachermummy1 · 20/02/2021 14:42

Send in primary schools on March 8. It is safe for them and they are not 'super spreaders'.

After Easter (dependent on cases not being out of control) start sending back y11, 12 and 13, then the other years starting with y10. Rota systems may be the best option.

Because it should be something easy to find, it’s pretty big news and those of us working in schools would want to know about it, it’s shocking and major news. They shouldn’t have to link it, I should be able to find it.

Fembot123 · 20/02/2021 14:46

Also why is it indisputable?

Itisasecret · 20/02/2021 14:46

Why on earth would she name the school? There is such a nasty hatred of teachers in here, she’d be harassed and her work hounded for using mumsnet. We all know, that’s exactly what would happen. Anyone who says otherwise is dishonest.

Itisasecret · 20/02/2021 14:48

Teachers are clearly fair game for real life stalking. What a low that is, even for MN posters. I think there are laws against that stuff.

Arggh, I work in a bloody school and do not hate teachers. I’m not asking her to name anything, she said it made the local papers so I should be able to find it, as I’ve said it’s big and shocking news..
