Increased heart rate after Oxford AstraZeneca jab

NicoleKidmanSuperFan · 18/02/2021 13:35

Hi everyone, I'm a 34 year old mum and had the Oxford AstraZeneca jab yesterday. At 2am my pulse increased to 112 and stayed like that till 11am when it finally started coming down I also had a fever of 38 but it went down with paracetamol. I have no underlying health issues and my partner also had the same heart rate and temperature.
Did anyone else experience this? I called the doctor to ask if it was normal and she said it can happen and will settle throughout the day.
Thankfully it's come down to 88 but by goodness that was so scary.

I don't mean to put anyone off and I'm still happy I had it but I can't read this on the side effects leaflet.

Anyway hope everyone is well and let's get jabbed so we can get back to normality!

That's nothing to worry about, it's just your body doing what it should in response to the vaccine

MRex · 18/02/2021 13:47

Quite small numbers reporting that on the yellow card system, but there are a few. Details of findings overall here from January; 375 of 3m people reported palpitations, compared with 10 times as many reporting fever: coronavirus-yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk/. Similar levels from the Pfizer vaccine.
Until more months of data are gathered it's hard to know, but based on 1 in 10 being likely to get a fever in the trials you could say possibly 1 in 100 people might get palpitations, rare but not massively rare. Are you feeling better now?

You should report it so MHRA can collect appropriate stats on frequency, did they give you a card with the details? You can report here: coronavirus-yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk/.

I've heard alot of my friends in their 30's have had similar, increaed heart rate and fever for the night after the vaccine. All went back to normal by the next day. Just your immune system getting to work!

lifestoooshort · 18/02/2021 13:49

The increased heart rate will just be because of the fever totally normal with fever I believe - hope you feeling better

Sillyduckseverywhere · 18/02/2021 14:03

I had an increased heart rate after the Pfizer vaccine.
It returned to normal after a few days, don't worry

Thanks for all the replies. Yes I have reported it on the yellow card scheme. I will do a separate one for my husbands too. Mine is going up again now but I will rest and take some more paracetamol and see how it goes. Husbands is okay so far.

To be honest I wish it wasn't a side effect as it feels quite alarming but I know by the GP's tone it's okay. She said if it was to stay high and if I get chest pain then get an ECG.

Feeling okay otherwise and no fever anymore despite the high pulse rate.

Hi Op

I had my Astra Zeneca jab Tuesday at 4.30, checking back my health stats on my Apple Watch I can see that approximately 24 hours later as my temp rose to 38.0c my heart rate rose in parallel by 10-20 beats per min above my usual baseline and returned to normal about 12 hours later as my temp returned to normal for me of 36.5

It really is quite normal as an immune response, being a bit of a geek I also did an ecg which was normal as were my oxygen saturation levels for me as an asthmatic

I love my watch

If it's any help I'm currently in hospital for something not covid related (chronic illness) and mh heart rate has been over 120 constantly for three weeks. It's not right and no one is saying it is , it's because my immune system is angry, but no one is panicking over it
Cookerhood · 18/02/2021 15:00

Yes, according to my Fitbit mine was raised over night after the jab. I was warmish (wouldn't say fever though).

NicoleKidmanSuperFan · 18/02/2021 15:24

Hi, thanks guys. @OpheliasCrayon hope you feel better quickly.

I'm trying to sleep it off. Apart from that though I feel totally fine.

I wish it was a one dose jab. Really don't want to go through it again.

Also totally unrelated but I hope schools open soon as vaccine uptake is getting better.

Yes my sisters a nurse and her HR went to 93 all night long! Highest resting ever.

NicoleKidmanSuperFan · 18/02/2021 17:54

Wow @Tomnooktoldmeto and @Cookerhood maybe I should invest in these watches. Have been thinking about getting it since I have been doing long walks to monitor my steps. It’s great that you can look back!

Heart rate sitting at around 80-89, still feeling groggy and wouldn’t be able to work or make a big dinner today but overall I’m okay.

Has anyone had their second dose Oxford jab yet? How did you feel after?

OP posts:
flapjackfairy · 18/02/2021 18:06

A temperature will increase your heart rate anyway so it is to be expected

Cookerhood · 18/02/2021 18:12

I don't think anyone will have had the 2nd AZ dose yet, will they? It hasn't been going for 12 weeks yet.

MRex · 18/02/2021 18:22

Trial data seemed to suggest people got the hardest hit in side effects from Pfizer second dose and Oxford AZ first dose, their respective other doses having fewer effects. Seems a bit weird.

NicoleKidmanSuperFan · 18/02/2021 18:46

@MRex oh really? Well this is encouraging as I only have the second dose left and it would be nice if I didn't get these type of side effects again. It's funny you say that as my mum and mother inlaw both had the Oxford and had no side effects in the first dose. Also grandma and father had their first Pfizer, both of whom are very ill and had no side effects at all!

It's funny me and my hubby are young and pretty fit, normal bmi and we're experiencing more side effects than the older members in our family.

I know when I was looking at posts like these before I'd get annoyed with the poster for putting me off but honestly it's good to share so that someone who also has similar side effects knows they're not alone x

OP posts:
MRex · 18/02/2021 19:21

It's all odd isn't it, the differences. Only one of our 4 parents got side effects from Pfizer, and only one of 3 cousins from Oxford AZ. All first dose only except one other elderly relative got a headache from second dose Pfizer. At least the side effects all seem to pass quickly, whatever they are.

Becca7910 · 18/02/2021 19:27

Hi yes my temp went up to 40 even with paracetamol.. My heart felt like it was going fast too. I reported it to the yellow card thing. Always phone for more help/advice if v worried though. X

NicoleKidmanSuperFan · 19/02/2021 19:40

Just to let everyone know I feel totally fine now. Everything has returned back to normal. It couldn't have been such a rare side effect as DH had the same. Which makes me feel better that my body isn't unique to the vaccine and the reaction can happen,

The gp said today only one other person has had this they he's seen so report it the the yellow card MHRA scheme.

How do I get over the fear of the second vaccine ? I seemed to have developed anxiety around the second vaccine now!

OP posts:
NicoleKidmanSuperFan · 19/02/2021 19:40

That he's seen*

Lovemusic33 · 19/02/2021 20:09

I have this too, I had the vaccine Monday and keep waking up in the night feeling like I’m having a panic attack, heart rate over 105 and slightly low O2 levels.

Lovemusic33 · 19/02/2021 20:11

I would have the thought the 2nd vaccine won’t have the same effect as it’s already in our systems.
