Just received a shielding letter but no one knows why!!

I’m freaking out a bit that there’s something wrong with me I don’t know about. I received a shielding letter but have no idea why I have it. I’m slightly overweight but haven’t been weighed by a dr in 10years and that was just after I’d given birth to my youngest. I have no underlying health conditions I know about and I’m only 38. All I can think of is that I had gestational diabetes but that was years ago. I’ve already had the first jab as I work in healthcare but I’m worried they know something I don’t. I’m not going to shield as I don’t think I need to and I want to work but it’s still thrown me quite a bit.

I, a 22 year old healthy, other than slightly overweight, active female have also been told to shield twice!

I couldn't get it resolved so just ignored the letters.

MrsJBaptiste · 18/02/2021 13:49

I had to shield for 12 weeks in the first lockdown but haven't heard a thing recently. No shielding letter as yet (happy about that!) but no vaccine invite either even though loads of 16+ year olds with not underlying conditions are being invited round here. Go figure!

Why is gestational diabetes a risk? You only have it whilst pregnant. So if you aren’t pregnant why would you be higher risk?

RhubarbAndRoses · 18/02/2021 13:55

Me too!! I also had GD. My baby is 7 months old now.

HelloViroids · 18/02/2021 13:56

@SugarbabyMilly I can only assume that either it’s because GD puts you at much higher risk of type 2 diabetes, and possibly some people who have had GD years ago will now have type 2 and be unaware of that... or there’s a glitch in the system where someone has included historic (rather than current) GD as criteria, and we’re not at increased risk at all!

That’s what I’m wondering...

Covid: Extra 1.7m vulnerable added to shielding list

GD appears to be included digital.nhs.uk/coronavirus/risk-assessment

WreckTangled · 18/02/2021 13:59

It's all so weird. I'm type one and so is my mum, neither of us has received a letter (thankfully). A type one I know (fit and healthy hba1c 5.7) has received a shielding letter. It makes no sense and as always they haven't been specific enough with the public for anyone to actually know why they're receiving these letters.

Anon778833 · 18/02/2021 13:59

My dad has type 2 diabetes, is very overweight but he has never had a shielding letter. So it can’t just be diabetes.

because you remain at risk of type 2 DM

I haven't RTFT but have you ever been a stem cell donor? DH has been recieving shielding letters regularly from the outset due to an administrative error where a cancer unit that he went to as a stem cell donor passed all donor details along with patient details to the department for health. He's just ignored them as it was an error.

@theviewfromhalfwaydown

My bmi is 30. They stopped my diabetes checks years ago as they said there was no need. If it’s just being overweight I’m sure most of the people I work with will be shielding too. As I say the last time I was weighed at the drs I was a healthy weight so I don’t get it.
Bmi 30 is obese so that’s why you’ve received a letter. Obesity comes with many health risks.
zobalina77 · 18/02/2021 14:03

I've had the letter this morning. I've got congenital heart disease and a high bmi, though it's down to 32 from 46. I've been weighed recently so my gp does know I've lost lots of weight. Luckily my work keeps us on full pay while shielding so I don't have to worry about that. I don't know how I feel though, it seems a bit late in the day to be adding people.

Cafcesque · 18/02/2021 14:05

I just got the Pfizer vaccination because they think I'm in category 6
I'm not. I have no underlying conditions. The doctor said that government send the codings out and they have got it wrong. Not to worry as everyone will get the vaccine at some point.
I also got a shielding letter last year saying I was high risk. It's an admin error apparently. 🤷‍♀️

Shit. Mine was in my junk folder. Type 1 diabetic. Those of you above who are diabetic, check your junk folder Sad

doireallyneedaname · 18/02/2021 14:08

Yes! I just received this too. Healthy BMI, 32, no underlying health conditions. I did have GD last year whilst pregnant.

Horizons83 · 18/02/2021 14:09

The list that someone posted above shows the weighting of each factor now:
digital.nhs.uk/coronavirus/risk-assessment

i.e. Age and BMI are the greatest weighting, being white, having asthma or having heart disease is actually right at the bottom.

BMI of 44, GD, high blood pressure.. I'm screwed aren't I? And yet no letter..

Inthemuckheap · 18/02/2021 14:15

There have been loads of letters received today by people non the wiser as to why.

Luckily it's not a legal document so you don't have to shield if you work outside the home, just be sensible as most people are anyway. Does seem like a lot of time and money wasted by the NHS imo.

AtiaoftheJulii · 18/02/2021 14:17

As some people have tried to explain, there’s ongoing work being done on all the data generated, and combinations of factors have been identified that raise your risk level.

Postcode is always going to be a blunt instrument - ours is flagged as being of low proportion of progression to higher education, which has provided some unexpected leniency with university offers to my undeprived children.

www.itv.com/news/2021-02-16/covid-17-million-more-people-told-to-shield-and-820000-moved-up-vaccine-priority-list

The new model, developed by New and Emerging Respiratory Virus Threats Advisory Group (Nervtag) and Oxford University, looks at the conditions of people who caught coronavirus in the first wave and suffered negative outcomes or death.

The model considers a range of factors including age, ethnicity, body mass index (BMI), other health conditions and also postcode, which is indicative of levels of deprivation.

A letter to GPs from NHS England, seen by the Health Service Journal, said a "new data-driven risk assessment… has been developed to help identify people who may be at high risk from Covid-19. It has been used at a national level to help identify an additional group of patients with specific multiple risk factors which, combined, may put them at similar risk to those who are clinically extremely vulnerable to severe outcomes. As a precautionary measure, this group will now be added to the shielded patient list (SPL), on the advice of the chief medical officer."

Lovely1a2b3c · 18/02/2021 14:19

It's probably GD.

You don't have to opt in to shielding but it will at least prioritize you for a vaccine and for online shopping slots.

Nothing in my spam and I checked my GP records, I haven't been coded as high risk. Got my mum to check hers too she also hasn't been coded.
SoisPoli · 18/02/2021 14:22

Looking at the weighting factors chemo C, B etc...

Anyone know what chemo grade they get? I'd not heard about that before...Confused

longestlurkerever · 18/02/2021 14:23

I think my factors are probably BMI (though I think lower now than will be recorded), previous GD, blood pressure and post code, though where I live is very diverse in terms of levels of deprivation so probably mis-classifies me a bit there. My personal view is that my categorisation is overzealous because my GD was always very well controlled and my blood readings have been fine now, blood pressure and weight are under control too now and my postcode is a bit of a red herring. Therefore I won't be shielding unless my doctor disagrees with my assessment, though I accept it's probably not an admin error.
