Why are cases rising?

I feel so depressed today. I had the vaccine last week and now I’m thinking what was the point?!

I

Why are cases rising?
OP posts:
FourTeaFallOut · 17/02/2021 20:46

It's not even rising. Interesting theories are not required.

Thimbleberries · 17/02/2021 20:49

We do, but we have to make sure cases are as low as possible, and then the chances are that under 18s will be vaccinated at some point too. Living with it is still possible, whilst reducing cases rates as far as we can, and improving track and trace. Gradually, people will start to get more immunity as most have been vaccinated, and booster vaccines will eventually be able to deal with more of the mutations, and things will balance out. But it's currently a real worry if cases take off too much in unvaccinated people, as that could throw the whole thing back into chaos. It's a crucial time, and people have to understand that just because it might cause a mild illness in those who are unvaccinated, we are still not at a point where we can just say that doesn't matter. Eventually, yes, hopefully we can. And indeed, we will need to be opening up the economy and seeing people. I'm certainly not saying locking down forever. But I am saying that high cases really do matter, particularly right now. It's a hugely careful balancing act, and a lot of people assume that high cases are fine as long as they are in younger and less vulnerable people. But if they get too high, then that is when we will risk going back into lockdown etc, as we could get back to a vaccine-resistant pandemic. So those who want to avoid constant future lockdowns really need to keep thinking that high case numbers are important, and do what they can now to get it as low as possible while we still have a chance of vaccines working and driving them very low - at which point they will be more controllable, and have fewer chances of mutation.

ParadiseIsland · 17/02/2021 20:55

1- look at today number of cases. Oh surprise they are much lower!!

2- app reporting symptoms are NOT covid cases.

I’d stop reading the Fail. Unreliable

ParadiseIsland · 17/02/2021 20:59

@Carycy

Thimble But we have said we have said we will be living with covid now for years to come. We know this. We cannot eliminate it. It is too contagious. And we aren’t vaccinating the under 18s so we won’t eliminate it. We cannot go on like this. If there are mutations, there are mutations. We cannot lock down every time there is a mutation. We have to get on with living, with businesses opening, we being together again, otherwise what is the point of living?
Actually this is NOT what epidemiologists are saying. They are agreeing the virus will stay. That it will become endemic in SOME areas whilst OTHERS will be able to eliminate it.

AT THE MOMENT, children can’t get the vaccine because it hasn’t been tested YET. But trials are ongoing and this will come.

There is no reason to be doom and gloom.

InterfectoremVulpes · 17/02/2021 21:06

@actiongirl1978

Our ZOE cases rose by 500 last week, though have just had a drop finally.

Not sure why though I know of one family, one business and a care home locally that have all been affected.

The Zoe app makes an estimate based on the number of participants. Whilst on a national level the number of participants means the estimates are good for predicting trends up or down, it makes it less accurate at a local level.
LimitIsUp · 17/02/2021 21:12

Dear God, the standard of education in this country is woeful

Carycy · 17/02/2021 22:20

Wow limit. Glad to know you are so intelligent though. I love it when people debate with different opinions and someone just declares everyone stupid. Makes the debate so much more interesting.

faerin · 17/02/2021 22:25

Omg stop getting your information from the Daily Mail.

FourTeaFallOut · 17/02/2021 22:29

All opinions aren't equal. Are we pretending they are now?

2021isgoingtobeasshitas2020 · 17/02/2021 22:35

Same
I have to shield again until the end of fucking March, despite having the first dose of the covid jab? I actually cried all day yesterday.

Dear God, the standard of education in this country is woeful
...and that's pre Covid, the education the children are missing out on 🤣🤣
PracticingPerson · 17/02/2021 22:44

We are not in control of this situation and I wish the government would be more honest.

I want reliable government data and a plan based on science, not pleasing the wacky fringe right wing of the tory party.

Hopefully it is just one day.

Octane · 17/02/2021 23:09

Stop reading the daily fucking mail, OP. You'll feel much better.

“I have to shield again until the end of fucking March, despite having the first dose of the covid jab? I actually cried all day yesterday.”

Last time I checked with still have some freedom!? You don’t HAVE to shield at all. It’s not a law. So if you begrudge it, don’t do it.

Pinkmarsh · 17/02/2021 23:21

They aren’t.

www.covidmessenger.com/

They’re falling in nearly every area.

BluebellsGreenbells · 17/02/2021 23:23

*I wonder why though. Is it because there are so many large towns in a string across the country, all close together?
Do less people in the NW work from home?
Are people less compliant?

I think it may be down to the number of occupants per household

One goes to work, brings it home from the train and from one additional case can then lead to 5/6 more cases within the household.

Plus if there’s a big hospital admission that means more hospital staff are exposed and also take it home.

Exactly.... whatever happened to use of own brain.... not shielding if you do to want to doesn't carry a fine ....maybe just be careful
BluebellsGreenbells · 17/02/2021 23:42

use your own brain meant lots of people deciding the risk of catching Covid was preferable to staying home/getting it over with.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 18/02/2021 03:17

The REACT study found levels of infection are being halved every 14.6 days. If the rate continues, the UK can expect to reach 1,000 cases a day by the second week of April.

Public Health England has a "high degree of confidence thatthe vaccineswill work against variants", including the Bristol variant of concern.

lightand · 18/02/2021 07:34

@Carycy

Cases will rise as people relax which they obviously are due to lock down fatigue. The point is the more people are vaccinated the less hospital admissions there will be. That is what matters. They can still get covid. They can still pass it on. They can still test positive. But they won’t get severely ill. Why can people not get this?
The problem comes if the government decides on it's lockdown policy by number of cases in the community.
lightand · 18/02/2021 07:38

Interested to know which areas the epidemiologists are saying can eliminate the virus.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 18/02/2021 07:43

Stop looking at newspapers especially the daily mail
I dont know what they are getting out of scaring people.
Its going to be a bumpy road for a while a little but up , a little but down, but common sense will tell you that when most people have had it , and most people are vaccinated- it cannot go up any more.

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 18/02/2021 08:32

And now they are falling.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-56098313

Which most posters told you yesterday

CKBJ · 18/02/2021 09:02

www.theguardian.com/world/2021/feb/18/covid-infections-in-england-fall-by-two-thirds-but-spreading-fastest-among-young

Yes they are falling but as the article states spreading fastest in 5-12 group. Is this because so many are in school? If so opening schools would need to be done carefully for two reasons. First more children get unwell probability increases for complications and second if rates are increase this could feed back into the community wide spread and in turn increase chance of new mutations.

Part of me thinks this is “convenient” with schools announcement on Monday.

whatswithtodaytoday · 18/02/2021 09:29

@2021isgoingtobeasshitas2020

Same I have to shield again until the end of fucking March, despite having the first dose of the covid jab? I actually cried all day yesterday.
  1. You don't have to shield, it's just advice.
  2. You're not even slightly immune until three weeks after your first dose. Then you need the second one for full immunity.
  3. We are in a very delicate balancing act between cases and vaccinations. The longer lockdown goes on and the fewer cases we have, the more chance vaccinations have of winning the battle before another wave takes hold.

No-one is enjoying this. Everyone misses their friends and family.
