I feel so depressed today. I had the vaccine last week and now I’m thinking what was the point?!

I

Why are cases rising?
OP posts:
Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 17/02/2021 19:08

@IceCreamAndCandyfloss

People thinking they are free to ignore SD after a dose of the vaccine. People mixing regardless of the rules. Large numbers in schools. Shopping seen as a leisure activity etc.
For starters despite media and mumsnet saying classes are half full

There are only 15% of children attending school in the UK at the moment

SilverGlitterBaubles · 17/02/2021 19:13

I think lockdown fatigue, less people WFH more employers pressuring to return to workplaces now vaccines are out and cases falling, perhaps people taking more chances with a false sense of security and also as soon as the media start talking about releasing restrictions people feel it's over and drop their guard. Could it also be to do with surge testing? More tests = more cases.

MarshaBradyo · 17/02/2021 19:15

@RedBrickChimney

Look at the trend, not the figures on a particular day. Cases are falling.

Also, the Daily Mail Hmm Utterly irresponsible reporting.

Not much to say atm so it’s all noise esp DM etc
FourTeaFallOut · 17/02/2021 19:21

The 7 day rolling case average on the 10th February was 16190.

The 7 day rolling case average today is 12289.

Coyoacan · 17/02/2021 19:22

The media have a lot to answer for an a lot of people's mental health issues on their conscience. Disgusting

Yeap. There are facts that we all need to know and then there is wallowing in misery. Unfortunately sometimes we miss the facts when we are trying to avoid the endless misery being peddled.

Thimbleberries · 17/02/2021 19:22

@Lazypuppy

The vaccine doesn't stop cases.

Cases going up isn't a bad thing once the vulnerable are vaccinated it means you would only get a mild case of it and recover

Yes it is still definitely a bad thing for cases to go up, even if they are mild illnesses - the more it spreads, the more mutations there are, and the greater chance there will be of a concerning variant that escapes the vaccines. If that happens, we will be back to huge cases and deaths and overwhelmed NHS - people really, really need to make sure that case numbers keep falling, rather than getting complacent and thinking it doesn't matter as long as those who are vulnerable have been vaccinated. It does matter, until transmission rates are very low.
SpringtimeBluebells · 17/02/2021 19:25

@Sleepyblueocean

The 7 day total is down by 24% from the previous week.
This....

Dropping

MrsFezziwig · 17/02/2021 19:27

Tim Spector from Covid app tweeted about this earlier. There's a suggestion that people are logging side effects of vaccines in the app and this might be showing as rising cases.

I report on the ZOE app and noticed quite large rises in “active cases” in my area over the last few days. I was also vaccinated a couple of days ago, and once you log this on ZOE you get a new popup to log side effects.

If the vaccination side effects have just been added into the normal symptom reporting then that’s rather sloppy data gathering and needs sorting.

ZOE has been pretty good at predicting future cases (as you would expect from a symptom tracker) but I always check with the BBC Coronavirus in your Area site as this gives actual positive test numbers. According to this, my area’s cases are slightly decreasing.

Takeitonthechin · 17/02/2021 19:32

The amount of new cases for Hull & Surrounding areas suggest its rapidly rising.

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 17/02/2021 19:33

OP, may I introduce you to Betteridge’s Law?

Chloemol · 17/02/2021 19:49
  1. Stop being hysterical
  2. Look at other sites not just the DM before you post
3 even the article says it’s becoming static and rising in a FEW areas
  1. Variants are being uncovered, but then mass testing takes place to contain it, and I have no doubt they have teams in trying to understand why
5 Figures are coming down, just slowing 6 you do understand that all the vaccine does is make sure if you catch covid it should be milder, and won’t stop you from transmitting it

We are still in this for the long haul

MoirasRoses · 17/02/2021 19:58

The north is easy - far less people WFH. Far far more blue collar workers. It doesn’t necessarily link to poverty but it does link to an unarguable fact that people in the north are on average poorer than in the south. There is also a much higher percentage of ethnic minorities in the north (excluding London). It’s been well documented in my local council area that cases remain much higher in those community areas.

Also, bear in mind we have only vaccinated the vulnerable & over 65’s who predominantly don’t work. And only with one dose. I’m not expecting a large effect until those under 60 are also done. Those are the people out working, kids in schools/nursery etc.. far more likely to catch it!

Carycy · 17/02/2021 19:59

Cases will rise as people relax which they obviously are due to lock down fatigue. The point is the more people are vaccinated the less hospital admissions there will be. That is what matters. They can still get covid. They can still pass it on. They can still test positive. But they won’t get severely ill. Why can people not get this?

Theunamedcat · 17/02/2021 20:01

Ours is up this week compared to last week

CoffeeandCroissant · 17/02/2021 20:02

The trend is down, cannot make any judgement on one days data (might just be a blip).

Why are cases rising?
Veuvestar · 17/02/2021 20:08

Oh fgs
That is the daily mail with unconfirmed data.
They’re not confirmed cases, admissions or deaths. They are symptoms that people are putting into an app.
I think that can easily be explained with vaccine side effect symptoms.

Tangledtresses · 17/02/2021 20:14

Our local cases are 372 out 140,000

CorianderBee · 17/02/2021 20:16

Vaccines probably giving some people confidence to see grandparent/friends etc who have had it.

Thimbleberries · 17/02/2021 20:28

@Carycy

Because it is still worrying if cases rise, even if hospital admissions fall. Every time the virus transmits, it increases the chance of a mutation of concern happening, which may eventually be resistant to the vaccines. It's vitally important that case numbers get very low, not just hospital admissions, so it is still really worth paying attention to the actual case numbers as well. It matters too.
TheChip · 17/02/2021 20:30

Aren't they rolling out mass testing again? More tests = more cases. Some probably false positive.

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 17/02/2021 20:34

@Tangledtresses

Our local cases are 372 out 140,000
That's a bit of a random post Grin

Is there more to it?

Dearymesheila · 17/02/2021 20:36

People do this ...
People do that ...
It’s all the other people ..

It’s a bloody virus that spreads easily and if you leave the house at all there is a good chance your passing it on.

We really can’t stay in forever!

Carycy · 17/02/2021 20:43

Thimble But we have said we have said we will be living with covid now for years to come. We know this. We cannot eliminate it. It is too contagious. And we aren’t vaccinating the under 18s so we won’t eliminate it. We cannot go on like this. If there are mutations, there are mutations. We cannot lock down every time there is a mutation. We have to get on with living, with businesses opening, we being together again, otherwise what is the point of living?

MarshaBradyo · 17/02/2021 20:46

Thimbleberries how long for? Does it change at some point because it’ll be hard to keep them low
