Anyone any idea? Maybe when non essential shops re-open? Missing swimming and classes so much.

No one knows. If you want a best guess, stick a pin in the calendar. For the sake of argument let's go with May 27th at 6am.

CovidPostingName · 17/02/2021 08:23

Sorry, I'm a bit crabby. It's just that no one knows. No one. And all the speculating in the world won't change it.

poppycat10 · 17/02/2021 08:24

It says in the Times the beginning of May for leisure centres.

But outdoor sports venues end of March so that might include outdoor swimming pools.

This is from the Times though - it's not official information.

emmathedilemma · 17/02/2021 08:29

May?!? Shock I'm going to be the size of a whale by then!
I'm done with this now. There seems to be no plan out of this and our areas are back to the rates they were well before Christmas when we were in level 3 / 4 and had things like this open. I think for us level 4 was gyms and pools open but no indoor classes for adults (the kids could do swimming lessons but the adults couldn't do aquafit - go figure!) and level 3 included classes.

PandoraP · 17/02/2021 08:37

I also want to know. I actually want a swim and the gym to open more than I want to see members of my familyBlush

wizzbangfizz · 17/02/2021 08:39

If we are allowed to mingle in clothes shops and I know that isn't the official line why wouldn't they open something so beneficial to people's health and well-being. So fed up (as I know we all are) but the goal posts keep moving further and further away

Wales have said gyms are one of their priorities for opening so I hope England follow suit.

May is too long. They were not responsible for the spread before and are hugely beneficial to mental and physical health. Much more so than cramming into indoor shopping centres to buy tat from primark but according to reports that seems a priority again! But the papers run a different story everyday about reopening so let’s wait and see and hope they are looking at posts and comments to gauge public opinion.

MarcelineMissouri · 17/02/2021 08:52

I am desperate to go swimming again, it’s pretty much top of my list of things to do. I have a bad feeling about this reopening though - it sounds like it’s going to be really slow..... which on the one hand I know is sensible but on the other hand..... waaaaaahhhh!!!

ilikebooksandplants · 17/02/2021 08:53

Desperate for the gym to reopen too! I feel dreadfully unhealthy and the weather has hardly been conducive to outdoor exercise lately - I hate running with a passion but love spinning and swimming. Unfortunately I live in a small flat so can’t buy my own bike!

lurker101 · 17/02/2021 08:54

Soon I hope, they were one of the last things to close, and didn’t seem to contribute to spread. Our large gym was really well run and cleaner than ever. Classes were socially distanced and it felt safer than the grocery store

sHREDDIES19 · 17/02/2021 08:58

To echo that for Wales gyms will be allowed to reopen when we move down to tier 3. Gyms are now very strict, controlled environments where risks are very low. Rigorous cleaning before and after class, mandatory equipment cleaning after each use, social distancing, limited numbers etc. I cannot wait to go back!

wizzbangfizz · 17/02/2021 09:02

Same @lurker101 our gym was so strict and controlled and was one of safest places you could be.

Agree it doesn’t make sense to send people shopping and to the pubs and not let us exercise. I swim in chlorinated water so don’t see much risk and it’s so beneficial to physical and mental health.

JaninaDuszejko · 17/02/2021 09:07

Desperate for the pool to open. I've put on over a stone in the last year and not swimming for months on end was a big factor. I do yoga every day and walk but it's not enough. DD1 has gone from being very sporty (averaging 2h a day exercise) to doing very little and it's not good for her, although at least football is one of the first things to start up again but she needs her swimming as well to build up strength and stamina.

emmathedilemma · 17/02/2021 09:11

I will not be putting a penny into the economy by going to the pub unless the gym is also open!

RJnomore1 · 17/02/2021 09:37

Sooner the better before I need a wheelbarrow to get me there. Ridiculous.

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 17/02/2021 09:46

I want to go swimming far more than I want to go clothes shopping or to a cafe or pub. Actually I’m not buying new clothes or eating out until I’ve lost about a stone, and I can’t do much weight-bearing exercise so it has to be swimming. Because there’s no way I’m dieting while homeschooling!

lljkk · 17/02/2021 09:54

My guess is gyms will open before or with other retail but not hospitality. Thinking back to November 2020 rules.

AnxiousAlpaca · 17/02/2021 10:14

As previous posters have said gyms stayed open in tier 3 when pubs and hospitality had to close. I heard someone say that apparently personal care and gyms won’t be the last to open this time but I dunno what the source of that was

DrunkenKoala · 17/02/2021 10:29

I’m also climbing the walls for the pools to open, hoping for shortly after the schools go back. I went weekly between Sept and the Nov lockdown and I always felt safe (safer than the supermarket). It doesn’t make sense to open non essential shops, restaurants and pubs before swimming pools.

poppycat10 · 17/02/2021 10:51

Ah but it does because it's the economy innit. Even though I guess most people are buying online - you still need stuff even if you can't go to your local high street to get it.

I have recently heard that one of our local leisure centres is going to close (although there was talk of it being rebuilt (on the same site so can't stay open) so hopefully that's the reason).

Eccle80 · 17/02/2021 10:57

I can’t see the logic in them being one of the last things to open again, they were open in tier 3, unlike retail there are records for track and trace of who has visited, and they are important to physical and mental well-being.
There is clearly a push in the industry today with Swim England posting the petition to open gyms first, and an article in the Telegraph about gyms and leisure centres asking to be prioritised

pinkearedcow · 17/02/2021 10:58

I felt much safer in the gym than the supermarket. I'm in Wales, so hopefully it won't be too long for us.

wakeupandshakeup · 17/02/2021 13:24

For the first time since moving from London to the coast I'm actually contemplating sea swimming.! I miss the gym and the pool so much. The weather isn't great but I may just give it a go..

Muchtoomuchtodo · 17/02/2021 13:27

My gym is outdoors - so I really hope we’ll hear something in the next 2 announcements. I’m in Wales so that’s Friday and then again in 3 weeks time.
