Australia - Remote Quarantine (shades of Ellis Island)

It looks like remote quarantine camps seems to be growing legs.

Howard Springs in the NT is already in operation.

Toowoomba in Queensland

Avalon in Victoria

The premise, as I understand it is that flights will land at the airports adjacent to these purpose built facilities which will have capacity to house upward of 1000 passengers. All quarantine support workers will live on site (2 weeks on 2 weeks off).

It makes sense but to me brings another dystopian twist to the tale...

Not sure why I am posting. Just seems never ending. This pesky pandemic.

Good idea. But it will just
Come off with them on change overs
Or the different groups isolating might mix and infect those leaving

Changi · 16/02/2021 21:49

Not exactly a new thing in Australia.

GADDay · 16/02/2021 22:04

@Changi it's very new.

Hotel quarantine will be scrapped. People will bypass usual airports and be sent to camps...

OP posts:
GADDay · 16/02/2021 22:06

@HSHorror

Mixing of groups won't be possible. These camps will have total control of guest movement.

Staff will have stringent testing & tracking on their off weeks.

cbt944 · 16/02/2021 22:14

I think it's a good idea. Allows guests to get fresh air from time to time and stretch their legs. Prevents infection leaking out into major cities.

GADDay · 16/02/2021 22:19

Agree it's a good idea. It just feels so bizarre.

Much better than having to shut entire cities down everytime a case gets out.

It's like something from a movie though. Feels like a prison (which it is is)...

Erm I think @Changi is referring to the Australian policy of housing asylum seekers offshore in 'camps'. So they have precedence.

The real question for Australia/NZ is what is their exit strategy?

(Answer: they don't have one)

Chessie678 · 16/02/2021 22:24

Reminds me of leper colonies

GADDay · 16/02/2021 22:25

Funny you should mention asylum seeker and offshore detention policies.

DH and I were talking about this yesterday. A disgusting approach to deal with some of the most vulnerable people/families in desperate situations.

Exit strategy = the whole population vaccinated by October.

Spot on. Not good.
OP posts:
MaxNormal · 16/02/2021 22:28

Ah well, once you cross certain boundaries its easy to just keep on going I suppose.
Especially as there will be plenty of support as it's worth giving up everything if its for covid.

GADDay · 16/02/2021 22:29

A commentator on telly (can't remember who) said that post pandemic these camps will be maintained for future pandemics 😷. Who knows what is true

StarCat2020 · 16/02/2021 22:30

These facilities are not going to ready straight away.

Makes you wonder how long the quarantine requirements will be in force for??

GADDay · 16/02/2021 22:33

@StarCat2020

6 weeks from approval for the new centres, is the word from developer's.

Howard Springs already in operation.

We are being told 2023 before borders start to normalise.

OP posts:
StarCat2020 · 16/02/2021 22:39

@GADDay
6 weeks!!!

We need those developers here (my town).

Thanks for your information

GADDay · 16/02/2021 22:42

I am more worried about the 2023 line in the sand. We cant afford 2 way quarantine.

By 2023 I won't have seen my son for 3 years and my other family for 5 years!!!

OP posts:
StarCat2020 · 16/02/2021 22:43

Where does your son live?

Covidworries · 16/02/2021 23:19

Wow lool at the PPE they are wearing.

Changi · 16/02/2021 23:53

Erm I think @Changi is referring to the Australian policy of housing asylum seekers offshore in 'camps'.

I was actually thinking further back than that.

CKBJ · 16/02/2021 23:58

If that’s what needed to prevent whole cities locked down so be it. Not ideal but better then the alternative. Again not ideal but if I wanted to visit family I’d have to do my 2week stay or whatever the requirements are. We have family abroad and we’re only discussing this earlier.

Thedramasummer · 17/02/2021 03:03

I imaging their exit strategy will be the same as most of the world, vaccinations.

AnotherBoredOne · 17/02/2021 03:12

I think it's fine.

spottygymbag · 17/02/2021 03:17

I think it's great, on the surface. More info is obviously needed on the details.
It would limit the potential for hotel outbreaks to seed across whole cities via public transport, cafes, restaurantants gyms etc.
The hotels aren't really fit for purpose with the new more infectious strains so I can see this being more successful at preventing widespread outbreaks and decreasing exposure to guests and workers. If I had to quarantine I would much prefer not being on bus with other potentially infected arrivals, having access to fresh air and the potential to step outside and stretch my legs. Even more so if I was travelling as a family.

It wouldn't be a 2 week "stay", its 2 weeks detention. May as well call it what it is.. and which can apparently be extended at any time as has been shown already.
