Does anyone else now find certain phrases extremely irritating?

I don't mean the new Covid phrases like "social distancing", "new normal" etc although reading the word "masks" makes me really cross for some reason even though I am fully behind and adhere to mask wearing etc

For some reasons phrases like "fed up", "had enough", "end of my tether" make me feel furious! Not because I don't empathise because I absolutely, completely do (I'm not angry because I'm one of those scathing race to the bottom posters, more the opposite)

Maybe it's the frustration and feeling of impotence of not being able to help those who similarly feel fed up etc etc as I do? And that empathising with other posters makes me feel my same feelings more acutely?

I don't know! But I've found I read many threads any more because I feel so stressed and irritated even though I'm completely with the posters and agree with them

The one that gets me is “rip through”. I have no idea why but I see it all the time. This virus doesn’t spread - it “rips”.

TiffanyIceberg · 16/02/2021 21:12

Unprecedented times, if I hear it one more time arrrrgh.

Beaniecats · 16/02/2021 21:20

Long covid
Think everyone has it

Safe is the worst. Used as an excuse for every new rule and infringement of personal liberty by governments and every fucking shop. Sick of it. Nothing in life is totally safe and noone can make it so.

"Following The Science".

It just makes me think of a 16th century cleric talking about the bible.

ilovesooty · 16/02/2021 23:17

"I'm done"
"We've sacrificed enough"

XenoBitch · 16/02/2021 23:21

I find them worrying, not irritating.

LouNatics · 16/02/2021 23:22

Social distancing is a phrase I’d never like to hear again.

Mainly because it applies to physical distancing. Which is why it’s always subtitled by ‘keep 2m apart’ because it is nothing to do with not socialising (which can be done from thousands of miles away) and everything to do with physically staying away.

It’s essentially saying SOCIALLY DISTANCE (but actually physically distance to about 2m apart because the phrase social distancing means fuck all and if quizzed on definition in 2019 most people would have had a guess at unfriending on Facebook?)

I prefer 'distant socialising' instead of 'social distancing'

Ah, I like that one. It is the absolute opposite of a 16th century cleric talking about the Bible. It means using scientific data properly to make the most sensible decisions. What's wrong with that?
3littlewords · 17/02/2021 05:03

"Do you have a link or evidence for that? "
"I'm not selfish unlike the rest of the society"
"Schools were never closed"
"Parents just can't be bothered to look after their own dc"
"Anyone who wants their dc to go back to school is a teacher killer"
"I've not been out anywhere at all since March "
"Should I get a test?"
"Do I need to isolate? "
My favourite is when people moan about how "rammed" somewhere is and its only that person who had an essential reason for being in said "rammed" place everyone else was just "flouting the rules"

Hollyhead · 17/02/2021 05:06

Stay safe makes me want to instantly have the person using it punished. It’s utterly wank. Stay safe from what? Just covid? All possible hazards? We never were compelled to do it before! Hate it.

CrayonInThreeBits · 17/02/2021 05:18

On some Covid-related threads on here it seems like every third poster uses the phrase "crack on".

Stop it. Stop.

Stop.

Not if you're a flat-earther.

OpheliasCrayon · 17/02/2021 05:58

"shall I get the vaccine"
"Why have I been messaged about the vaccine?"
"Is she jumping the queue for the vaccine?"
"Can I get the other vaccine?"
Etc ad nauseum

BorisandHarriet · 17/02/2021 06:11

“Thrown under a bus”. This has been used to refer to so many different sections of society on MN but frequently about either children or school staff.

These buses are causing havoc arent they, and if those people who have been thrown under the bus have had a positive covid test in the last 28 days they'll also be added to the death figures too - double whammy! If only the government put buses on lockdown we wouldn't be in the mess we are now 🤣
WaterGarden · 17/02/2021 06:20

"Educate yourself" has always been irritating

JeanSpinneysSmallPleasures · 17/02/2021 06:29

I'm a key worker

I am on my knees
affecting their mental health

Yes! It's like prefixing pandemic with global adds to the drama. I'm finding pandemic quite dramatic enough on its own.
