When do you think TV and film will adapt?

This might sound like a really odd question so please bear with me! (I don't watch any soaps or terrestrial tv so maybe some already has?)

Basically have been binging a few netflix shows lately e.g. Emily in Paris and have suddenly thought when will covid life be incorporated? Or are these shows all going to pretend they're based before the end of 2019? Emily has a few more seasons to go for example. In many ways we want escapism, but also covid is real life now. Even with is "learning to live with it" it has reshaped and adapted out everyday lives. We'll still need to be more careful, make sure we get our vaccines and mask-wearing will probably be a big thing in many countries for some time. Life has changed so much. Are all these shows still running going to just pretend nothing has changed?
There will also be a point where people just go "this doesn't happen anymore" to so much stuff.

The current series of Grey's Anatomy is based in covid world.

chipsandpeas · 13/02/2021 20:14

lot of US tv airing at the moment are based in covid times

Veuvestar · 13/02/2021 20:16

This is Us has Covid

Lelophants · 13/02/2021 20:18

I had no idea, fascinating!

We watch a (shit) made vie the other night that was based entirely on life in the COVID pandemic

Covid21?
mynameiscalypso · 13/02/2021 21:19

Lots of non-drama based TV has changed. Comedy / panel / quiz shows have all changed and the current series of Kirstie and Phil is half socially-distanced.

XenoBitch · 13/02/2021 21:25

Only soap I watch is Eastenders. There was mention of last year's main lockdown and that is it. They are living restriction free in it right now, and I am glad. I am living this shit.. I don't want to see it in soaps too.

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 13/02/2021 21:26

I hope it never does. I don't want to be thinking about covid 24/7.

Womencanlift · 13/02/2021 21:28

Casualty and Holby City have both had covid episodes which were fantastic. Most of the soaps are referencing social distancing and have people wearing masks

DarceyDashwood · 13/02/2021 21:29

Season 5 of This Is Us starts at the start of the pandemic and covers it (as well as BLM)

WouldstrokeTomHardy · 13/02/2021 21:31

We've been watching films and pre covid stuff on prime, Netflix, YouTube etc. Don't want it rammed down out throats. Watching TV is time to relax and have some escapism

BogRollBOGOF · 13/02/2021 21:31

I needed subtitles to follow The Handmaids Tale anyway. Wink
Unless it is actually a distopia, there's no way I'd watch something set in the realism of life 20/21 style. It's bad enough existing through it and trying to find some glimmer of escapism.

halcyondays · 13/02/2021 21:32

Covid exists in the world of Corrie. Or at least people seem to walk into a building wearing a mask, then take it off, which seems a bit back to front.

DrCindyPops · 13/02/2021 21:34

As pp said Greys is set in covid times & I'm finding it quite difficult to watch sometimes. It's all very real and upsetting and not the escapism I'm used to but at the same time I can see why they said they couldn't make a series and not include one of the biggest medical issues of our time.

Chickenfingers · 13/02/2021 22:39

I'm sure in Neighbours they now have bottles of sanitiser on the tables in the cafe, which I don't remember seeing before. No other reference though but might be cos it's Australian.

PuzzledObserver · 13/02/2021 22:42

I find it weird watching shows made before Covid with AUDIENCES! And people shaking hands and hugging and standing together.

Cant imagine going back to that.

MoirasRoses · 13/02/2021 22:50

I hope not. TV is escapism!

If that happens, I’m just going to watch Schitts Creek on repeat for the rest of time, it’s a much better world pre-pandemic anyway 😂

Yutes · 13/02/2021 22:53

I actually use tv as escapism and at the moment it is stressful and unenjoyable to incorporate COVID into these.

I suppose I’ll need to adapt myself, at some point.

purpleme12 · 13/02/2021 22:54

I hope it doesn't adapt permanently
I hate the covid changes to my favourite programme
Completely changed it

bare123 · 13/02/2021 22:56

I loved Emily in Paris, the series is about her moving to Paris socialising in the office cafes etc I don’t see how they could incorporate covid into it, watching someone WFH wouldn’t be fun!

Veuvestar · 13/02/2021 23:32

Watch Chicago Med, first 5 minutes very dramatic!

GoldenPenPot · 13/02/2021 23:40

I think Coronation Street should’ve ignored it entirely. Instead, we now have this half-arsed, out of date representation where the pub is still open and people occasionally wear a mask (while barely mentioning the pandemic).

daisyjgrey · 13/02/2021 23:44

@DrCindyPops

It was quite a clever way to do it really, HCP's/actors in full PPE must have made filming much simpler restrictions wise!

I agree some of it is really hard to watch though, which is probably the point.

LunaHeather · 13/02/2021 23:50

@AvocadosBeforeMortgages

I hope it never does. I don't want to be thinking about covid 24/7.
Same here I will be sad if the next season of Emily in Paris contains this. It's meant to be fun!
