How much would you pay for your child's vaccine?

AtLastEarwax · 13/02/2021 14:58

This is just off the top of my head...

Say a vaccine was approved for children

It was going to become available on the NHS but is available to buy privately beforehand
Q&As
Would you buy it or wait? *buy it
How much would you be willing to spend? *£150 pc

Simple curiosity that's all

It's not really a "willing to spend" thing. I can't afford it and neither can a great many people.

Which is why healthcare should always be free at the point of delivery.

OpheliasCrayon · 13/02/2021 15:05

If I thought it would truly benefit them and they they were likely to suffer a significantly serious disease, then I would pay whatever. I don't think this though so I feel I would probably wait.

I have paid for the chicken pox vaccines for my children because I was taking immunosuppressants when pregnant and so I didn't want them to contract it because I was told that if they were to catch it it could be more serious due to the fact that they could have been immunosuppressed from me. I paid 150 for DD1 and 180 for DD2 (different areas) if you want an actual amount . On the flip side though, I didn't give my DD2 the rotavirus vaccine which is obviously free on the NHS as that was contraindicated and by me having taken the drugs I do when pregnant so again - didn't take that risk.

As PP says though I don't like how things like this often come down to money though, and whilst I could afford it I would rather if this did happen it was free for all when it was needed.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 13/02/2021 15:09

I think the vaccine should be available privately for adults and then children as soon as it’s confirmed suitable for them.

The more vaccinated the better, if there was a small surcharge we could raise extra funds to help recover some costs.

Private healthcare has always been available, no different.

cautiouscovidity · 13/02/2021 15:11

I'm sure it won't be made private for adults or children because everybody needs it, there is more demand than supply at the moment and it would be exceptionally unfair to let the privileged jump the queue.

sadpapercourtesan · 13/02/2021 15:13

Private healthcare has been wrong for as long as it's been available. Nobody should receive preferential healthcare treatment because they have more money, and vice versa - one of the benchmarks of a civilised society is parity of access to healthcare.

SonnetForSpring · 13/02/2021 15:25

Private vaccines would be a disaster.

AfterSchoolWorry · 13/02/2021 15:27

€250 maybe max if it meant they could go back to school.

But I live in Ireland where paying for healthcare is normal and not in any way political.

SummerHouse · 13/02/2021 15:28

I will spend £20 on four packs of Pokémon cards. But I won't do that.

DBML · 13/02/2021 15:46

I’d pay whatever it took to go abroad. £1000? I’d pay it.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 13/02/2021 17:22

I think the vaccine should be available privately for adults

Why should people who can pay be able to queue jump?

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 13/02/2021 17:29

They wouldn’t be queue jumping though if the private vaccines were from a different order and supply.

TravellingTilbury · 13/02/2021 17:29

Zero.

I don't think children need the vaccine for this virus given they are at v low risk of covid-19. But I'm sure I'm a lone voice on this issue so no need to pile on!

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 13/02/2021 17:30

I wouldn’t - I don’t want my child vaccinated for illnesses that haven’t been proven to cause them a problem. I didn’t pay for a chickenpox jab.
I’m not an anti Vaxer, and I want my Covid vaccine but not my children yet.

Suzi888 · 13/02/2021 17:33

I paid £150 for the chicken pox vaccine.

I wouldn’t pay any amount to vaccinate against covid, because DD is only five.

HalfPastThree · 13/02/2021 18:32

We paid for chicken pox vaccines. I’d pay for polio, whooping cough, meningitis, MMR etc. if I had to. But I wouldn’t pay for a Covid vaccine as it isn’t a serious disease in children.

Thatwentbadly · 13/02/2021 18:35

@TravellingTilbury there have been numerous reported cases of otherwise very healthy children developing long Covid. Some to the extent that they need to use a wheelchair outside the house. Obviously these are rarer reaction but it’s still a risk.
AfterSchoolWorry · 13/02/2021 19:08

I agree. People want to get on with their lives.
Alfaix · 13/02/2021 19:14

£1000

TravellingTilbury · 13/02/2021 19:23

Thatwent, I appreciate that some children have developed long covid but there is little evidence to suggest that risk of severe long covid in children is statistically significant enough to require a vaccine (which might only be 60% effective).

I assume the vaccine would be annual so things would vary each year anyway, plus there would be more data in the future regarding the nature of Covid 19 on children. It will be something I'll be monitoring. Hopefully there will also be more studies on the effectiveness of early viral treatments.

Hotcuppatea · 13/02/2021 19:24

Zero. I have no anxiety about my children catching this and having a poor outcome.

AIMD · 13/02/2021 19:32

No I wouldn’t pay because ....

A) I don’t personally worry about my child’s individual risk of covid.

B) I don’t think people should/should have to pay to get a vaccine that is needed by the more vulnerable or those working with vulnerable.

I’d maybe feel differently if my child was very vulnerable for whatever reason.

DBML · 13/02/2021 20:17

I’ve suggested £1000.

Not because I have anxiety about my child getting sick with Covid. But because I would pay whatever it takes to get my life back to normal and be able to travel sooner again.

DipSwimSwoosh · 13/02/2021 20:22

£0
They don't need it.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 13/02/2021 20:28

It’s the community spread and safety of the staff plus some children di get very ill with it.

ScrumptiousBears · 13/02/2021 20:34

We paid £400 for one of the meningitis vaccines that the youngest got but the oldest was too old qualify for. 🤷🏼‍♀️
