Are people ever going to stop asking about holidays?!

Hi,

Don't get me wrong, I'd absolutely love a holiday! Who wouldn't?! But honestly, if I see one more "Hancock says it's too early to give holidays the go ahead" type headlines, I'll lose what I have left of my mind!

The same pointless questions at the briefings are an absolute waste of time. Why do they bother? As if Boris, Hancock etc will just turn round and say "ah.. well actually, Laura, it's good news! We're still in lockdown, but sod it! Get your castanets out and your sombrero on, it's time to book that all inclusive afterall! 🥳"

I feel for the travel industry, I really do, but it's quite clear that right now, it would be very unwise to book anything, unless you can get a full refund I suppose.

It reminds me of when your kids keep asking the same question over and over, until you finally cave, just to get a bit of peace! Is thar what the press are hoping to happen?

Press: "Boris, can we go on holiday?"
Boris: "Alas, I'm afraid it's just too soon to say".
Press: "Boris, can we go on holiday yet?
Boris: "No"
Press: How about now?.....Now?....How about now?..

🤦‍♀️🤯

@RedToothBrush

It is when you are in the middle of a pandemic and the hospitals are full of dying patients and you expect to fly off around the world!
So your answer would be “no holidays while it’s still formally a pandemic”, then? Or “no holidays until the NHS is coping”? Or “no holidays until nobody in the country is in hospital with covid”? “No holidays unless you’ve been vaccinated”?

What if I want to visit family abroad, is that less selfish? What if I want to do some sightseeing while I’m there?

There isn’t a simple answer to this, and you can’t reduce the massive complexity over how we balance different things against covid by calling people selfish for asking the question.

greenlynx · 11/02/2021 19:12

I think if anyone ever tries to hug me again I will have a screaming fit.
I feel the same.

I’m a bit fed up with this question about holidays as well. The problem is that the government can’t guarantee anything so any bookings/planning we do on our own risk. We can’t predict 100% how things will turn out it’s a nature of pandemic.
I haven’t seen my parents more than 1.5 years (they are not in UK) and I would love to see them but it was obvious for me that it won’t happen this summer. I’ve told them this before Christmas. People can plan/book/ pack their things but they should understand that it might change at a very short notice so the responsibility is on them.

Takingeachday · 11/02/2021 19:16

I don’t understand why people feel they need Boris’s permission to book a holiday! It’s obvious that he’s not going to be anyone what the situation will be in the summer - it depends on so many things. Just book one, making sure you can get a refund if necessary.

GintyMcGinty · 11/02/2021 19:16

It's a huge part of the economy - lots of jobs depend on it here as well as abroad
Lots of people have holidays booked (many postponed from last year) and want to know if they can go
People want something to look forward to
It's a sign of return to some kind of life

Sorry if that's annoying to you.

Tequilala · 12/02/2021 09:05

@GintyMcGinty, annoying me? For goodness sake, can you honestly not see that it doesn't matter how much we want it, the answer currently will be the same, no matter how many times you ask it?

Tequilala · 12/02/2021 09:10

@Takingeachday, I agree. If you want to go ahead and book one, book one! Book as many as you like if you can get a refund or accept losing your money if it turns out you can't go, but nobody knows for certain which way it's going to go.

For me it’s not about having a holiday but being able to travel to see my parents. That’s the only thing that’s important to me.

But I think it’s ok for everyone to want a holiday. Some people managed to have a holiday in 2020 but many people didn’t.

Tequilala · 12/02/2021 09:43

@Notcontent, so do I. I'm not annoyed that people are asking the question! If it were the hospitality industry, hugging your loved ones, which are much more important to me, I still wouldn't want the same old questions to be asked time and time again. It's ridiculous.

I think it's just that people are hitting the wall now in a way they weren't last April. We all hoped with vaccinations starting in late 2020 that we would be back to normal soon and we are not. When you get desperate your focus narrows to the one thing that gives you a lifeline and that's what you cling to. For a lot of people that is travel.

I'm absolutely desperate for the kids to go back, desperate. I'm getting on fine with homeschooling and most stuff is done but I have had to reduce my hours right down. I love my job and I miss being able to do it. DH is taking half term leave so I can work next week. I'm obsessing about that constantly and googling for news every day.

My parents on the other hand desperately want to get on a plane. But they are in Ireland with grandchildren in the UK and Australia that they haven't seen or hugged in over a year, and one arriving this year they won't see in person for at least a year. Their focus is on travel and they are constantly checking the news and the restrictions and travel advice.

Everyone has their lifeline...

Rosie2111 · 12/02/2021 11:36

We didn’t holiday last year - partly because we were both flat out working crazy hours and weekends on critical covid matters, and partly because we followed the spirit of the rules that it would be unwise and would lead to a worsening of the pandemic. Well now it seems like virtually every other person we know were either furloughed (many on 100% salary) and had lots of time off to relax, potter at home and go places, or went on holiday! We’ve booked a week in Cornwall (with a generous cancellation policy) for August and I seriously hope we’ll be able to go!

BlackeyedSusan · 12/02/2021 11:41

I agree. We will be allowed holidays when it is safe enough. Of course the government can't say when yet. It was annoying me too. Hold them to account for other stuff but not something they can't control. You could bang on about how they are going to make holidays safer and how they are working towards it but not when as there are things we can't know yet. ( Variants, other countries rules, responses and virus levels etc)

GintyMcGinty · 12/02/2021 12:57

@Tequilala you do seem awfully annoyed. Deep breath and move on.

Pimlicojo · 12/02/2021 13:06

What I don't get is that people are clamouring to be told they can go on holiday then in the next breath clamouring that our borders should be closed....,,

faerin · 12/02/2021 13:13

No.

BeautifulStar · 12/02/2021 13:18

It’s that time of year when people want to book their holidays - surely not that hard to understand why some people may want to hear the governments opinion?

I for one have booked a uk holiday in July, I’m confident it’ll go ahead and if not we’ll get a refund or move it to next year. No biggie.

I think the general gist of threads like this are the OP and others saying “I’m not bothered about a holiday or can’t afford one so other people shouldn’t be bothered either.”

We are thankfully all individuals though with different priorities and opinions. Doesn’t make you right or some kind of superior being to not care about having a holiday!

TheVampiresWife · 12/02/2021 13:22

I've never been on holiday. All the talk of holidays lately has really made me want to go on holiday, though.
